North Wessex Downs AONB Management Plan 2014-19 Final draft for adoption North Wessex Downs AONB Management Plan 2014-19 Prepared on behalf of the Council of Partners 1 North Wessex Downs AONB Management Plan 2014-19 Final draft for adoption This document is the statutory Management Plan for the nationally designated and protected landscape of the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), as required under the Countryside and Rights of Way (CRoW) Act 2000. It is a plan for all those that have a responsibility to look after this precious and treasured landscape. Following informal consultation in May 2013, an initial draft was published for comment between August and October 2013. Public events were held in each local authority area. Specialists reviewed the comments we received and brought their recommendations to a special meeting of the North Wessex Downs Management Working Group. The North Wessex Downs Council of Partners and relevant local authorities have approved this plan for publication. This Management Plan, the Strategic Environmental Assessment and the Landscape Character Assessment can all be found on the North Wessex Downs website: www.northwessexdowns.org.uk Enquiries about these documents or any other aspect of the review process can be made to the North Wessex Downs team through the website or by telephone: 01488 685440. 2 North Wessex Downs AONB Management Plan 2014-19 Final draft for adoption Foreword on behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) are some of our finest landscapes. • Liddington Castle Circular Walk
LIDDINGTON CASTLE CIRCULAR WALK 8½ miles (13¾ km) - allow 4 hours (see map on final page) Introduction This walk within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty takes you through some remarkably remote, undulating and scenic downland. It is just a few miles south of Swindon and includes a lovely stretch of The Ridgeway as well as the ancient Iron Age fort of Liddington Castle. Please note the walk shares part of the route with the Aldbourne Circular Walk, although the shared section is walked in the opposite direction. The walk is waymarked with this ‘Ridgeway Circular Route’ waymark. Terrain and conditions Mostly downland tracks, some a little rough or rutted. Short lengths of field path through pasture and minor road at start and finish. Quite strenuous with several fairly steep up and downhil sections. 248m (814 feet) ascent and descent. No stiles. 14 gates many of which seem permanently open. Some paths can be muddy and slippery after rain. There may be seasonal vegetation on the route. Preparation Wear appropriate clothing and strong, comfortable footwear. Carry water. Take a mobile phone if you have one but bear in mind that coverage can be patchy in rural areas. If you are walking alone it’s sensible, as a simple precaution, to let someone know where you are and when you expect to return. Getting there By Car: The walk starts in the small car park on the minor road 100m west off the A346 just south of the petrol station at Chiseldon at map grid reference SU192793. To find it online, visit www.gridref.org.uk, enter ‘SU192793’ in the box and click ‘find a place’.

  • Groundwater Information West Area of Thames Region
id1036281 pdfMachine by Broadgun Software - a great PDF writer! - a great PDF creator! - http://www.pdfmachine.com http://www.broadgun.com – Wiltshire SFRA Groundwater Information West Area of Thames region covers the northeastern tip of North Wiltshire County Council and the north half of Kennet District Council. The boundary with EA South West region runs from north of Malmesbury to Swindon in North Wiltshire, and from north of Devices to Ham in Kennet DC in a line parallel with the A4 south of Marlborough and north of the Vale of Pewsey. The geology covering the parts of Wiltshire discussed here may be obtained from BGS 1:50,000 geology sheets no. 252; Swindon, and 266; Marlborough. Solid geology Clays underlie much of the central area of the northern tip of North Wiltshire area covered here (West Walton & Oxford Clay). The Environment Agency classifies these deposits as non-aquifer because they do not readily store or transmit groundwater. These deposits would not normally be prone to groundwater flooding. Limestone members of the Great Oolite Group (Forest Marble and Cornbrash) are present in the northwest of the North Wiltshire area. Forest Marble is an inter-bedded limestone and mudstone and is mostly impermeable. Cornbrash Limestone is classified as a minor aquifer. Springs could occur from perched groundwater within these strata. Limestones and some Mudstones are present to the southwest of the North Wiltshire area. Corallian deposits are present to the east of Swindon around Lydiard Millicent, south of Purton. The Corallian is a mix of inter-bedded sandstones, limestones and clays and is classified as a minor aquifer.
