His father, Walter, worked as a machinist and his mother, Beatrice, looked after the couple’s eight children. After learning the guitar from his brother at age ten, Young began playing the upright bass professionally at thirteen. He played at the After Hours Club on Sunday nights from 2:30 a.m. until dawn and then ate breakfast at home before heading to school. Young achieved great heights as a musician and could be heard on bass, cello and vocals with his own group, the Eldee Young Jazz be heard on bass, cello and vocals with his own group, the Eldee Young Jazz Quartet before his passing. -

Biographical Description for The HistoryMakers® Video Oral History with Eldee Young PERSON Young, Eldee Alternative Names: Eldee Young; Life Dates: January 7, 1936-February 12, 2007 Place of Birth: Chicago, Illinois, USA Residence: Chicago, Illinois Occupations: Bassist Biographical Note Eldee Devon Young was born on January 7, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Walter, worked as a machinist and his mother, Beatrice, looked after the couple’s eight children. After learning the guitar from his brother at age ten, Young began playing the upright bass professionally at thirteen. He played at the After Hours Club on Sunday nights from 2:30 a.m. until dawn and then ate breakfast at home before heading to school. Young met pianist Ramsey Lewis at McKinley High School. They played together until after graduation in 1953, when Young toured with a blues band through the South. However, he was unsatisfied and his preference for jazz and bebop led him to return to Chicago. Lewis, drummer Isaac "Redd" Holt and Young formed the Ramsey Lewis Trio. The three worked hard to improve their skills. Young went on to study at the American Conservatory of Music. The Ramsey Lewis Trio released their first album in 1956, becoming hugely successful. Their albums The In Crowd and Hang on Sloopy went gold and the group sold out Carnegie Hall. -

This is the Smithsonian oral history interview with NEA Jazz Master Ramsey Lewis, pianist, composer, arranger, media personality, and entrepreneur, conducted in his home in Chicago. Good afternoon. Lewis: Good afternoon. How are you today? Brown: I’m fine. If we could just start by you stating your full name, your date of birth, and your place of birth. Lewis: Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis, Jr. Chicago, Illinois. May 27, 1935. Brown: If you could tell us your parents’ names and any information about their background, where they were originally from. Lewis: My mom’s name is Pauline Lewis. She’s from around Jackson, Mississippi. Her family was born out in the county, but the closest city was Jackson. In fact her brother eventually opened a funeral home in Jackson, Mississippi. My dad is from Georgia. Once again – I heard him talk about Atlanta. I heard him talk about Macon. But I think once again that he was out in the county and never identified the exact place where he was born. The popularity of jazz, in decline since the rise of bebop in the mid-1940s, was further eroded by rock and roll’s rise to prominence in the mid-1950s. By the mid-1960s, the jazz world seemed to be faced with a choice: adapt to accommodate the burgeoning new genre or risk fading further into popular irrelevance. Many jazz artists chose to ignore rock, oftentimes viewing it as a simple-minded pursuit dominated by white artists stealing from black musicians. Other artists, though, chose to engage with the new music and bring it into the jazz world by interpreting rock repertoire. In a way, this trend was no different than the time-honored jazz tradition of interpreting contemporary popular songs. Interpreting rock songs and incorporating them into their repertoire was different, though, because of the many prejudices that jazz musicians held toward rock music and the relative simplicity of rock’s musical attributes. This paper is dedicated to the in-depth study of jazz versions of rock music in the 1960s. -

Ramsey Lewis October 2013 Composer, pianist and jazz legend Ramsey Lewis has been referred to as “the great performer,” a title reflecting his performance style and musical selections which display his early gospel playing and classical training along with his love of jazz and other musical forms. A native Chicagoan (born May 27, 1935), Mr. Lewis represents the great diversity of music for which Chicago is noted. Ramsey Lewis first captivated fans with his first album “Ramsey Lewis And The Gentlemen of Swing” by the Ramsey Lewis Trio in 1956. By 1965, he was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with “The In Crowd,” “Hang On Sloopy” and “Wade In The Water.” He has three Grammy Awards and seven gold records to his credit. Often called legendary, Mr. Lewis concedes “It’s a high honor when someone says so, but I don’t see myself that way. What keeps me enthusiastic and energizes me, is the realization that the more I learn, the more I find there is to know.” He received the industry award for the 2006 Stellar Award for Best Gospel Instrumental Album, “With One Voice” presented in January 2007. He was also the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award in January 2007. Mr. Lewis has received four (4) honorary doctorate degrees and numerous other accolades. Ramsey Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of four, studying the basics and fundamentals. But, “It wasn’t until I started studying with the late Dorothy Mendelsohn that I responded to some of the startling things she was teaching me, such as ‘Listen with your inner ear,’ and ‘Make the piano sing.’ These concepts were revelations!” Soon after, he began learning Bach, Beethoven, Hadyn, Brahms and Chopin, and other basic piano repertoire for the concert pianist. -

FROM DREAMLAND TO SHOWCASE: JAZZ IN CHICAGO, 1912 TO 1996 October 1996 – February 1997 CASE 1 INTRODUCTION Music and musical entertainment have played an important role in Chicago’s cultural life since the middle of the nineteenth century. Concert music, opera, festivals, conservatories, music publishers, and instrument makers contributed to the developing vitality of America’s second largest city. As the nineteenth century came to a close, Chicago was also becoming a center for vernacular styles such as ragtime piano playing and musical comedy. The publishing of popular sheet music thrived. In the early part of the twentieth century, rapid expansion of the city through ambitious construction projects and the growth of public transportation were among the many factors in the emergence and flourishing of jazz. Post-World War I economic prosperity, the increased climate of social daring, and rebellion against the moralistic attitudes that led to Prohibition all contributed to the Chicago music scene. The excitement of urban life, the migration of vast numbers of African-Americans from the South to Chicago, and intensified interracial awareness and interaction also set the stage for the great array of ballrooms, cabarets, nightclubs, and theaters on the city’s South Side. Improvised in the Dreamland Cafe and other pioneering Chicago nightspots, this strong musical tradition still lives on today in popular venues such as Andy’s, the Green Mill, and the Jazz Showcase. “From Dreamland to Showcase: Jazz in Chicago, 1912 to 1996” presents a chronological survey of jazz music and musicians associated with Chicago, beginning with a brief introduction to the origins and early development of jazz. -
