2 It is a tremendous privilege to work at the University of Sheffield and I am in the wonderfully fortunate position to be able to see the many successes – the extraordinary pieces of research, the applications that have the potential to transform lives and the inspiration of young people – which are at the core of what we do.

But there are times when these strengths come into especially sharp focus.

One such was when a small party from the University visited India, where we spent a week of intensive meetings with members of the Indian government, universities and some of our alumni, talking about the ways that we might partner this great and rapidly developing nation. What we saw was remarkable. Particular strengths in Sheffield in the applications of science, the interface between medicine and engineering, renewable energy, sustainability and governance, and food security are all priorities for this growing nation of talented people who are transforming their nation and changing the world.

But most important of all, we saw great opportunities for the partnership of people – academic scholarship, staff and students, who from Sheffield to India are driven by a desire to take knowledge and put it to work for the good of all.

So as I write, the University is welcoming Indian colleagues to Sheffield for a conference which focuses on the application of world-leading stem cell science into areas as diverse as the treatment of deafness, Parkinson’s disease, cancer and blindness. In this vital field, we are training scientists from around the world, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett the potential to make breakthroughs which are life changing for people of every nation.

The University of Sheffield has a great past and, as our recent visit to India has illustrated, a wonderful future. We have the determination, skills and ambition to address the great challenges of our own time in both our teaching and research. But we need to do so in ways that are true to our heritage and our values of warmth, intelligence and service to others. Our partnership with our donors epitomises this Received approach. Your generosity and engagement enables us to do things that are vitally important but which without your help wouldn’t be with thanks possible. I am deeply grateful for your support. 3 Maintaining our independence

The support and vision of donors is vital to enhancing our students’ experience and to our ambitions as a world-class, research-intensive university. As an independent charitable institution, it is essential that we do not rely on one source of income. Diversity of funding ensures that the University is able to chart its own course, based on our strong belief in a culture of higher education that is built on a positive interaction between learning, teaching and research – and one that nurtures the arts, humanities and social sciences alongside traditional strengths in science, engineering and medicine. Your support is crucial to our independence and ensures that we are able to advance strategic plans more quickly and in ways that would not otherwise be possible.

The roots of the University lie in philanthropy, not only from enlightened industrialists such as Mark Firth, but in the ‘penny donations’ from ordinary working people in Sheffield. That tradition remains today with the generosity of wealthy individuals and foundations, joined by (left-right) Miles Stevenson, Director of Alumni & Donor Relations, and Peter Agar, Director of Campaigns. the regular donations made by alumni, parents, staff and friends of the University. Grant: £22,000 “Working with students and volunteers from the University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, we have mined the archives to create a permanent heritage display in the recently refurbished Medical School to be enjoyed by students, staff and visitors alike,” said Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Tony Weetman. “This comprises a Heritage Room; restoration and display of significant paintings, artefacts and busts; a timeline feature; information panels in all the seminar rooms describing the School’s founding fathers and early scientific pioneers; the naming of the library (after Sir Arthur Hall); and a mural depicting the ‘reach’ of medical students across our region. We are extremely grateful for the support and funding from the Development, Alumni Relations & Events Office, enabling us to bring these ideas to life. The results are truly impressive and long-lasting.” In addition to the Alumni Fund grant, funding for the Heritage Project was also provided by legacies and gifts from Dr Rachael Brook (MB ChB 1956), Dr Gerald Holmes (MB ChB 1954), Dr John Huggins (MB ChB 1962) and Dr Harold T Swan (Hon LittD 1992).

Sport Sheffield minibus Grant: £20,000 Sport Sheffield, the sports facilities and activities department, has taken delivery of a minibus for use by student clubs and societies. Large numbers of students travel around the country every week, representing the University in their respective sports. The minibus is making a big difference to the logistics of organising these trips. The bus is also having an impact locally as it is leased by Sheffield Community Transport when not in use by University sports teams for volunteering projects, community events and programmes, sports days and community sports teams.

PondLab Grant: £6,898 The PondLab project encourages students in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences to bridge the gap between laboratory practicals and full-scale field trips by participating in realistic ecological experiments. Twelve large (2,000 litre) tanks have been installed in the Arthur Willis Environment Centre and set up as large ponds in which different combinations of aquatic plants are established to test the effects of vegetation on the structure and function of the pond community. Thirty-two smaller tanks are used for a variety of shorter-term projects. PondLab is used for student projects, tutorial work and practical classes, as well as ‘Be an Ecologist for the Day’ outreach visits. Dr Philip Warren said, "We are very grateful to the Alumni Fund for supporting the project. Without the grant we would not have been in a position to set up this facility and provide the experience it offers to our students.” David Meadows, Development Officer, tests out the new minibus.

Professor Peter Robson

Professor Peter Robson Prize and Scholarship Peter Robson OBE (Hon DEng 2000) was Professor of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University from 1968–96; he was amongst the first in this country to demonstrate some of the unique electrical properties of the III–V semi-conductor gallium arsenide, which led to the creation of the EPSRC National Centre for III–V Semi-conductors. Following Professor Robson's death in 2010, we have established a permanent endowment to fund an annual prize in his name using the generous contributions made André Bisson (right) receives the R Alison Hunter Prize from Professor Grant Bigg. by his friends and former colleagues. His wife, Anne Robson, donated £3,000 towards the prize. She then also kindly donated R Alison Hunter Prize £25,000 to establish the Peter Robson Scholarship in Engineering. WE ARE ENORMOUSLY GRATEFUL TO THE GARFIELD WESTON FOUNDATION TO ENABLE OUR SCIENTISTS AND CLINICIANS TO PRESS AHEAD WITH THIS PATH-BREAKING WORK.

A patient enters the new MRI scanner. Major boost for diabetes research The University of Sheffield is breaking new ground in research and patient treatment in tackling diabetes – a rapidly escalating problem affecting millions in the UK and worldwide. Over the past 15 years, the Radiology Unit has developed world-leading expertise in imaging techniques that strengthen our understanding and treatment of this debilitating disease. The key to Sheffield’s success has been a combination of three factors: the synthesis of world-renowned clinicians, experts in imaging techniques, and a large population of local people who have diabetes and are keen to participate in clinical research. Sheffield Radiology’s CONTACT research and patient care in this field is of global importance and the team works with diabetologists from China, Europe and North America.

A prestigious grant of £1 million from the Wellcome Trust has enabled the purchase of a high-quality Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. Building on this success, the Radiology team have harnessed a broad spectrum of support – from local charity Neurocare to international funding bodies such as the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes and the European Union. The Alumni Fund has also contributed £25,000 to this important work.

The latest support for this research has been from one of the largest and most respected philanthropic institutions in the UK. The Garfield Weston Foundation Diya Gupta has made a vital gift of £280,000 for a three-year project to research the nature Trusts and Foundations Officer of diabetes and its effect upon vital organs of the human body. Q How much money do you allocate for Special Project Grants each year? A We allocate the money raised through initiatives such as our annual Telephone Campaign – money that our donors tell us they are happy to donate to the University. This amounted to £130,000 in 2011–12.

Q Who can apply for these grants? A We contact departments across the University, asking for submissions. Each submission must be supported by the relevant faculty. The amounts available range from £2,000 to £25,000.

Q What criteria do you lay down for submissions? A To be successful, a project must demonstrate its impact on students – the greater the number the better. So it could be for new sports and activities kit, the refurbishment of part of a building, or a new academic project involving the student experience or enhancing learning. The Professor Rebecca Hughes, Pro-Vice-Chancellor – International department must also allocate funds to the project to show it has been accepted as important by more than one interest group. 31 Six boats came sailing by

John Rumble

University of Sheffield Sailing Club The club is keen to make contact with alumni who were members during their time at the University. Please visit www.sailing.union.shef.ac.uk for details of how to get in touch.

John Rumble’s family at the naming ceremony with current members of the Sailing Club.

The University of Sheffield Sailing Club is a friendly and active organisation, with a long history, where students and alumni come together to enjoy affordable sailing. Over the last few years, the club has prioritised its fundraising activities to buy new boats. With the help of donations from alumni, staff, friends and a grant from the Alumni Foundation they raised £18,000, which they have used to acquire six new Firefly dinghies. On 1 December 2012, the club hosted a naming ceremony for one of the new boats, in memory of John Rumble (MB ChB 1955), former consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Southend General Hospital. John died in 2011 and left a legacy of £1,000 to the University. We decided to allocate this gift to the Sailing Club, as John was a founder member in the early 1950s and enjoyed sailing throughout his life. We were then extremely grateful to his widow, Gill Davies, who donated a further £2,000 in his memory, The Sailing Club in the 1950s. and this money was also donated to the club.

The current of the club, Jack Gomm, said, "We are so grateful to all Sailing Club alumni, particularly John Rumble and family, and also to the Alumni Foundation who contributed so generously to our boat fund. The six Fireflies are well used by the club already, including the recent racing event, the Sheffield Shuffle, which attracted teams from 17 universities to the Pennine Sailing Club. The boats also made an appearance at this year’s Varsity competition." Toasting the newly named boat.
