My transcriptionists—Joanne Hartmeyer, Melissa Hartmeyer, and Silvia Rojas-Anadon—spent countless hours producing very detailed, thorough transcripts. Silvia also very skillfully supplied translations for the interviews that were conducted in Spanish. Always positive and supportive, he has an uncanny ability to take what you have produced and to find its strengths no matter what phase of the v thinking and writing process you are in, while being expansive and forward thinking about its contributions. Mark Mizruchi encouraged me to push the project further in terms of depth, clarity, and intellectual rigor. I always looked forward to his incisive, constructive critique, knowing that the project would be better for it. I would not have wanted to go through the dissertation process without Mark. Mayer Zald has offered long-term support throughout graduate school, always making himself available and reading multiple chapter drafts during the long writing process. He has an ability to hone in on an argument, cut to the heart of the matter, and present the intervention or question that is most necessary. He has also pushed me to think expansively in terms of how the dissertation relates to other work—other studies, literature, theorists, and disciplines—and to make connections that I would not have been able to make myself. My committee chair, Howard Kimeldorf, has been involved with this project from its conception. I simply could not have asked for a better advisor. His thoughtful interventions on countless written drafts and in endless conversations have been invaluable. Howard has both an expert command of the subject matter and a keen sense for the practice of research (not to mention an incisive red pen that has left its indelible mark on these pages). His insight, commitment, and humor have seen me through every phase of the project. I have, moreover, benefitted from collaboration with Howard on a manuscript about solidarity and collective action that uses much of the same data that is found in Chapter 2. Although the chapter moves in some different directions, its content and shape owe much to Howard’s thinking on the subject. He has been supportive and vi positive throughout, and it is to Howard that I owe the greatest intellectual debt, not to mention personal appreciation. In writing these acknowledgements it is unfortunately very difficult for me to deal with my troubled family of origin. Nevertheless, I owe a special thanks to my father, solid and sweet, who has always supported my academic pursuits. It is his intellectual curiosity and critical eye that shaped my own. Her confidence in my abilities has always been appreciated, along with her understanding of and support for the juggle of work and family life. My two young sons, Noah and Gabriel, made me smile every day and reminded me of all that is important in life. ATLESON* INTRODUCTION Much of the popular criticism of our system of industrial relations has focused on the frequency of unofficial strikes.. In the first place such an attitude usually expresses and supports a mistaken view of what con- stitues good industrial relations. The assumption is made that relations between employers and employees are likely to be co-operative and construc- tive when open conflict is avoided in the form of action which temporarily disrupts production. In fact peace may be preserved by constant capitula- tion of the one side to the other's demands, or by joint acquiescence in stagnation and the avoidance of any change that would stir up resistance. Peace at this price, apart from obstructing economic growth and social advance, merely stores up trouble for the future. At best it is only one yardstick of good relations and then a very imperfect one, Employees can give vent to their dissatisfaction in many other, less open but no less costly, ways than a complete stoppage of work.1 Disobedience: The silver lining to the cloud of servitude. THE DEVIL'S DICTIONARY Walkouts by employees without union approval or authorization are uniformly condemned by legal tribunals and commentators, but there has been little investigation into the causes, and hence possible justification, for such walkouts. One basic reason for the refusal to consider both the functions of wildcats and their possible justifications is the traditional belief that conflict is necessarily disfunctional. This article attempts to investigate the causes of wildcat strikes and to demonstrate that uniform censure of such conflict is not justifiable.

While the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) were able to undergo processes of internal transformation by the late 1990s, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) were not. This project illustrates how successfully revitalized unions were able to foster "cultures of creativity," which inspired new organizing strategies and new understandings about what a union should be. Two factors were particularly important to the generation of these cultures. First, cohorts of social movement outsiders brought new ideas to these unions. Second, revitalized unions had organizational structures that were decentralized enough for experimentation, but centralized enough for coordination, meaning that outsiders had the space to experiment and unions had the infrastructure to learn from, and scale up, those experiments that were successful.

This book develops a critique of platforms and platform capitalism from the perspective of workers and contributes to the ongoing debates about the future of work and worker organising. In particular, the book focuses on three dynamics that are driving struggles in the platform economy: PLATFORM CAPITALISM the increasing connections between workers who are no longer isolated; the lack of communication and negotiation from platforms, leading to escalating worker action around shared issues; and the internationalisation of platforms, which has laid the basis for new transnational solidarity. There and Back Again In 1932, American Economic Association President George Barnett had every reason to believe that structural forces were suffocating the labor movement. Labor was in retreat (Barnett 1933). The American Federation of Labor had seen its membership drop from 5 million in 1919 to just 3 million in 1933 (Zieger, Minchin, and Gall 1986). Radical unions, like the International Workers of the World, had been successfully repressed during the first Red Scare (Dubofsky 2000). The Knights of Labor, who once represented 1 in 5 American workers, were a long distant memory (Zieger, Minchin, and Gall 1986). Indeed, by 1933, only 6.9% of workers were in a union (Mayer 2004).
