  • Antichrist As (Anti)Charisma: Reflections on Weber and the ‘Son of Perdition’
Religions 2013, 4, 77–95; doi:10.3390/rel4010077 OPEN ACCESS religions ISSN 2077-1444 www.mdpi.com/journal/religions Article Antichrist as (Anti)Charisma: Reflections on Weber and the ‘Son of Perdition’ Brett Edward Whalen Department of History, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, CB# 3193, Chapel Hill, NC, 27707, USA; E-Mail: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-919-962-2383 Received: 20 December 2012; in revised form: 25 January 2013 / Accepted: 29 January 2013 / Published: 4 February 2013 Abstract: The figure of Antichrist, linked in recent US apocalyptic thought to President Barack Obama, forms a central component of Christian end-times scenarios, both medieval and modern. Envisioned as a false-messiah, deceptive miracle-worker, and prophet of evil, Antichrist inversely embodies many of the qualities and characteristics associated with Max Weber’s concept of charisma. This essay explores early Christian, medieval, and contemporary depictions of Antichrist and the imagined political circumstances of his reign as manifesting the notion of (anti)charisma, compelling but misleading charismatic political and religious leadership oriented toward damnation rather than redemption. Keywords: apocalypticism; charisma; Weber; antichrist; Bible; US presidency 1. Introduction: Obama, Antichrist, and Weber On 4 November 2012, just two days before the most recent US presidential election, Texas “Megachurch” pastor Robert Jeffress (1956– ) proclaimed that a vote for the incumbent candidate Barack Obama (1961– ) represented a vote for the coming of Antichrist. “President Obama is not the Antichrist,” Jeffress qualified to his listeners, “But what I am saying is this: the course he is choosing to lead our nation is paving the way for the future reign of Antichrist” [1].

  • Islam in Apocalyptic Perspective by Thomas S
46 Copyright © 2010 Center for Christian Ethics at Baylor University Islam in Apocalyptic Perspective BY THOMAS S. KIDD The history of American apocalyptic thought about Islam offers much reason for discouragement. Evangelical Christians have been too eager to gloss biblical prophecy with extra-biblical assertions and morbid scenarios of Islam’s demise. ince the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, many Christian Americans have expressed new interest in Islam. Often this interest is Sjust a matter of seeking more information about Muslims, the Prophet Muhammad, and the Qur’an. But many American evangelical and funda- mentalist Christians have placed increased focus on Islam and the apoca- lypse. The horrific collapse of the World Trade Center towers might well turn one’s thoughts to the apocalypse, but something more than horror is at work among these conservative Protestants. For many of them, Islam and jihadist terror seems to fit into long-held ideas about the last days before the return of Christ. Although the details have changed over time, American Christians have actually been speculating about connections between Islam and the apocalypse for centuries. The level of apocalyptic interest generated by 9/11 is new. The pattern of thought is not. For centuries, Protestant Christians have seen Islam as one of the chief religions over which Christ would triumph in the last days. In early Ameri- ca, colonists routinely commented on Islam, its supposedly duplicitous and violent nature, and its coming demise. Colonial Americans lived in a mental world where Islam was perceived as a major threat to Christianity, especial- ly because of the imperial ambitions of the Ottoman Turks, and the aggres- sions of the Barbary pirates.

  • SHOWDOWN at ARMAGEDDON 4 Chapter 1 Jerusalem Invaded It
SHOWDOWN AT ARMAGEDDON Chapter 1 Jerusalem Invaded It happened in the early morning of June 5, 1967. Wave upon wave of Israeli bombers swept in from the Mediterranean, flying so low they escaped radar detection. By nightfall the surprise attack had left hundreds of Egyptian war planes lying in ruins. Israel, threatened with immediate invasion by neighboring nations, had decided to strike first. And they hit hard! By the evening of the second day Israeli fighter jets had crippled the Arab air forces, destroying more than 400 planes while losing just twenty-six of their own. Israeli ground troops won equally stunning victories on all fronts. Within six days the lightning war was over. The people of Israel, although outnumbered forty to one, vanquished their foes and more than tripled their territory - one of the most brilliant feats in military history. No wonder the Israelis danced in the streets of Jerusalem after that Six-Day War. From Israel’s beginnings in 1948 as an independent nation, its existence has been a series of miracles. Miracles long overdue. For nineteen centuries, the Jewish people had been scattered as aliens throughout the world. Although they enriched their host countries wherever they went, they suffered unrelenting persecution. Then came Hitler’s so-called Final Solution - the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust. But at last the world community recognized the rights of Jewish people to live safely and freely, governing themselves. With a United Nations mandate as their authority, Jewish colonists fought for independence. They overcame formidable odds to create a new nation in their ancient homeland.

Marketing the beast: Left Behind and the apocalypse industry Torin Monahan VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY, USA And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (Bible, Revelation 13: 16–18) The Second Coming evokes not a Jesus who saves, but one who pays dividends. Or, more accurately, one who promises a miraculous return on a limited spiritual investment. (Comaroff and Comaroff, 2000: 315) Prophecies of the apocalypse circulate and multiply with incredible frequency, velocity and profitability. In some respects, concerns over the impending destruction of the world are ancient obsessions and well-worn mythological motifs, which wax and wane according to technological changes, historical contingencies or significant turning points on arbitrary calendars. On the other hand, contemporary apocalypse prophecies fuse in interesting – and perhaps indelible – ways with capitalist economies. Whether the looming dis- asters are technological, environmental or biblical, they tend to afford amaz- ingly lucrative opportunities for some while fueling the increasing vulnerability of others. Jean Comaroff and John Comaroff (2000) label this emerging set of practices millennial capitalism, indicating a globalized, neoliberal form of capitalism predicated upon privatization, individual responsibility and the right to consume (not to produce).

  • The Chronology of Major Eschatological Events in Chapters 4 to 19 of Revelation
THE CHRONOLOGY OF MAJOR ESCHATOLOGICAL EVENTS IN CHAPTERS 4 TO 19 OF REVELATION by Ian Macintyre LL.B., University of the West Indies, 1985 A THESIS Submitted to the faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Religion at Reformed Theological Seminary Charlotte, North Carolina July 2013 Accepted: __________________________________ Dr. Simon Kistemaker, Ph.D. Thesis Mentor __________________________________ Second Reader ii ABSTRACT The thesis supplements arguments against the view that believers will not experience the Great Tribulation by seeking to demonstrate that this view is inconsistent with the chronology of the major eschatological events in Revelation 4 to 19. After outlining the incompatibility of this view with Jesus' eschatological discourses in the Synoptic Gospels and with Pauline teaching, the chronology is developed from an examination of the structure of Revelation and a futuristic interpretation of the visions in Revelation 4 to 19. Revelation 4 and 5 are viewed as introductory to the whole apocalyptic section of Revelation comprising chapters 4 to 22. The visions in Revelation 6 to 19 are seen as portraying a cohesive story which answers the question of whether God will judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge the blood of the martyrs. The answer is that the blood of the martyrs will be avenged after all those who are destined to be martyred are killed, the final set of martyrs being an innumerable multitude who will be killed during the Great Tribulation on account of their refusal to worship the Antichrist or his image. When all the martyrs have been killed, God will inflict terrible judgments on the worldwide kingdom of the Antichrist, but will provide special protection for the remnant of believers on earth.
