For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord [the Tribulation, preceded by the Rapture] will come just like a thief in the night. — 1 Thessalonians 5:1–2 Believers who died after Christ’s resurrection are given resurrected physical bodies For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and (lit.: who) remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. — 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ’s at His coming, then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power. — 1 Corinthians 15:22–24 Intended to keep the Church from the Tribulation Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. — Revelation 3:10 Analogy: God recalls His “ambassadors” 1 This allows the Antichrist to take over And you know what restrains him [the “man of lawlessness”; i.e., the Antichrist] now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming. — 2 Thessalonians 2:6–8 The “restrainer” is likely the Holy Spirit, acting through the Church Judgement Seat (Bema) of Christ The Greek word βῆμα (bēma) refers to a platform/rostrum for a judge or king Pilate and Herod sat on these Occurs sometime before the Second Coming of Christ This is because Christ returns with His saints (believers) Believers are rewarded to varying degrees Now if any man builds on the foundation [Christ] with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work (lit.: of what sort each man’s work is). If any man’s work which he has built on it [the foundation] remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. — 1 Corinthians 3:12–15 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body (lit.: the things through the body), according to what he has done, whether good or bad. — 2 Corinthians 5:10 Marriage of the Lamb ... Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride (lit.: wife) has made herself ready.” Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’” — Revelation 19:7, 19:9 Occurs after the Judgement Seat of Christ but before the Marriage Supper of the Lamb Takes place in heaven The Bride of Christ (the Church) is wed to Christ ... for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin. — 2 Corinthians 11:2 Attended by raptured believers only Magog Invasion And the word of the Lord came to me saying, “Son of man, set your face toward Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired (or clothed in full armor), a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords; Persia, Ethiopia (lit.: Cush) and Put with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer with all its troops; Beth-togarmah from the remote parts of the north with all its troops—many peoples with you. — Ezekiel 38:1–6 “Therefore prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “On that day when My people Israel are living securely, will you not know it? You will come from your place out of the remote parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great assembly and a mighty army; and you will come up against My people Israel like a cloud to cover the land. It shall come about in the last days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me when I am sanctified through you before their eyes, O Gog.” — Ezekiel 38:14–16 Invasion of Israel from the north by a coalition of nations Battle of Gog and Magog Described in Ezekiel 39 Distinct from the Battle of Armageddon Battle of Gog and Magog (Ezek. 38–39) Battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16, 19) Gog leads the invasion The Antichrist leads the invasion Armies drawn by God 2 Armies gathered by demons 3 Israel initially at peace 4 Israel in the midst of the Tribulation Armies gather to fight Christ and His Armies gather to plunder Israel 5 army 6 Takes place between Megiddo and Takes place on the mountains of Israel 7 Bozrah 8 9 Attackers destroyed by wild beasts, fire, etc. Attackers destroyed by Christ’s “sword” sent by God 10 (His Word) 11 ⅚ of the invaders destroyed by God? ָשׁ ָשׁא The phrase “sixth part” only appears in the KJV, and may be a mistranslation: the word (”shashah, “to divide into six parts) ִשׁ ָשּׁה shawshaw, “to lead on”) was probably confused with) And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel. — Ezekiel 39:2 (KJV) Most modern translations have something similar to “drive you on” or “drag you along” ... and I will turn you around, drive you on, take you up from the remotest parts of the north and bring you against the mountains of Israel. — Ezekiel 39:2 (NASB) I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north and send you against the mountains of Israel. — Ezekiel 39:2 (NIV) And I will turn you about and drive you forward, and bring you up from the uttermost parts of the north, and lead you against the mountains of Israel. — Ezekiel 39:2 (ESV) Israel uses invaders’ weapons as ‘fuel’ for 7 years “Then those who inhabit the cities of Israel will go out and make fires with the weapons and burn them, both shields and bucklers, bows and arrows, war clubs and spears, and for seven years they will make fires of them. They will not take wood from the field or gather firewood from the forests, for they will make fires with the weapons; and they will take the spoil of those who despoiled them and seize the plunder of those who plundered them,” declares the Lord God.

  • I. the Work of the Two-Horn Beast of the Earth (Rev. 13:11-15)
The Revelation of Jesus Christ The TRINITY of EVIL: Satan, the Antichrist (Beast of the Sea), and the False Prophet (Beast of the Earth) Revelation 13:11-18 Introduction In last week's study, we were introduced to the "beast of the sea", who is identified as the Antichrist. The Antichrist is empowered by Satan, and eventually rules as a political and military genius over the earth during the second half of the 70th Week of Daniel. The Antichrist will rule the world as the leader of the revived Roman Empire. In today's passage, we are introduced to the "beast of the earth", who is soon identified as the "False Prophet". Whereas the Antichrist is a political and military leader, the False Prophet is a religious leader. The reader is now aware of Satan's unholy trinity. Satan is the counterfeit of God the Father, the Antichrist is the blasphemous counterfeit of the Son, and the False Prophet is the deceptive counterfeit of the Holy Spirit. Like Ahab and Jezebel joined the religious priests of Baal, so the Antichrist and the False Prophet, combine political and religious power to rule over the world. I. The Work of the Two-Horn Beast of the Earth (Rev. 13:11-15) 11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. 12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who live on it worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed.

Ryan, S.J. Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society Let me begin on holy ground, Ireland. In 1931 William Butler Yeats concluded his short poem, “Remorse for Intemperate Speech,” with a stanza that speaks to me as the person I am, for better or for worse: Out of Ireland have we come. Great hatred, little room, Maimed us at the start. I carry from my mother’s womb A fanatic heart. Ireland is, indeed, a small place, and it has seen great fanaticism and hatred, although the temperature of Ireland as a whole has subsided dramatically since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, despite Boris Johnson. The whole island of Ireland today occupies 32,599 square miles. British-administered Northern Ireland includes 5,340 of those square miles. Combined Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approximate the size of Indiana. The total population of the island of Ireland is 6.7 million people, about a half a million more than the population of Indiana. There is another place of “great hatred, little room” that I wish to discuss this evening: the Holy Land, made up today of the State of Israel and the Palestinian autonomous regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

  • Premillennialism in the New Testament: Five Biblically Doctrinal Truths
MSJ 29/2 (Fall 2018) 177–205 PREMILLENNIALISM IN THE NEW TESTAMENT: FIVE BIBLICALLY DOCTRINAL TRUTHS Gregory H. Harris Professor of Bible Exposition The Master’s Seminary Many scholars hold that premillennial statements are found only in Revelation 20:1–10. Although these verses are extremely important in supporting the premillen- nial doctrine, many other verses throughout the New Testament also offer support for premillennialism. Our study limits itself to five biblically doctrinal premillennial truths from the New Testament that seamlessly blend throughout the Bible with the person and work—and reign—of Jesus the Messiah on earth after His Second Com- ing. * * * * * Introduction Whenever discussions between premillennialists and amillennialists occur, Revelation 19 and 20 is usually the section of Scripture on which many base their argumentation, especially Revelation 20:1–10. Before we examine these specific pas- sages, we know that God has already made several prophecies elsewhere. And how one interprets these passages has been determined long before by how those other related futuristic biblical texts have already been interpreted, before ever approaching certain crucial biblical passages such as Revelation 20:1–10. So, as we shall see, one should actually end the argumentation for this important component of eschatological theology in Revelation 19–20, not start there. In setting forth the New Testament case for premillennialism we will present the following: (1) a presentation of three of the five premillennial biblical truths

  • Gog and Magog Battle Israel
ISRAEL IN PROPHECY LESSON 5 GOG AND MAGOG BATTLE ISRAEL The “latter days” battle against Israel described in Ezekiel is applied by dispensationalists to a coming battle against the modern nation of Israel in Palestine. The majority of popular Bible commentators try to map out this battle and even name nations that will take part in it. In this lesson you will see that this prophecy in Ezekiel chapters 36 and 37 does not apply to the modern nation of Israel at all. You will study how the book of Revelation gives us insights into how this prophecy will be applied to God’s people, spiritual Israel (the church) in the last days. You will also see a clear parallel between the events described in Ezekiel’s prophecy and John’s description of the seven last plagues in Revelation. This prophecy of Ezekiel gives you another opportunity to learn how the “Three Fold Application” applies to Old Testament prophecy. This lesson lays out how Ezekiel’s prophecy was originally given to the literal nation of Israel at the time of the Babylonian captivity, and would have met a victorious fulfillment if they had remained faithful to God and accepted their Messiah, Jesus Christ. However, because of Israel’s failure this prophecy is being fulfilled today to “spiritual Israel”, the church in a worldwide setting. The battle in Ezekiel describes Satan’s last efforts to destroy God’s remnant people. It will intensify as we near the second coming of Christ. Ezekiel’s battle will culminate and reach it’s “literal worldwide in glory” fulfillment at the end of the 1000 years as described in Revelation chapter 20.

  • 1. from Ur to Canaan
Copyrighted Material 1. FromUrtoCanaan A WANDERINg PEOPLE In the beginning there were wanderings. The first human -be ings, Adam and Eve, are banished from Gan Eden, from Paradise. The founder of monotheism, Abraham, follows God’s com- mand, “Lech lecha” (“Go forth”), and takes to wandering from his home, Ur in Mesopotamia, eventually reaching the land of Canaan, whence his great-grandson Joseph will, in turn, depart for Egypt. Many generations later Moses leads the Jews back to the homeland granted them, which henceforth will be given the name “Israel,” the second name of Abraham’s grandson Jacob. So at least we are told in the Hebrew Bible, certainly the most successful and undoubtedly the most influential book in world literature. Its success story is all the more astonishing when one considers that this document was not composed by one of the powerful nations of antiquity, such as the Egyptians or Assyr- ians, the Persians or Babylonians, the Greeks or Romans, but by a tiny nation that at various times in the course of its history was dominated by all of the above-mentioned peoples. And yet it was precisely this legacy of the Jews that, with the spread of Christianity and Islam, became the foundation for the literary and religious inheritance of the greater part of humanity. By Copyrighted Material 2 C H A P T E R 1 this means, too, the legendary origins of the Jews told in the Bible attained worldwide renown. The Hebrew Bible, which would later be called the Old Testament in Christian parlance, contains legislative precepts, wisdom literature, moral homilies, love songs, and mystical vi- sions, but it also has books meant to instruct us about historical events.

Analysing a major cultural phenomenon in recent times De Villers, Pieter GR University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article represents a research overview of the nature, historical roots, social contexts and growth of millennialism as a remarkable religious and cultural phenomenon in modern times. It firstly investigates the notions of eschatology, millennialism and rapture that characterize millennialism. It then analyses how and why millennialism that seems to have been a marginal phenomenon, became prominent in the United States through the evangelistic activities of Darby, initially an unknown pastor of a minuscule faith community from England and later a household name in the global religious discourse. It analyses how millennialism grew to play a key role in the religious, social and political discourse of the twentieth century. It finally analyses how Darby’s ideas are illuminated when they are placed within the context of modern England in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century. In a conclusion some key challenges of the place and role of millennialism as a movement that reasserts itself continuously, are spelled out in the light of this history. Keywords Eschatology; millennialism; chiliasm; rapture; dispensationalism; J.N. Darby; Joseph Mede; Johann Heinrich Alsted; “Left Behind” literature. 1. Eschatology and millennialism Christianity is essentially an eschatological movement that proclaims the fulfilment of the divine promises in Hebrew Scriptures in the earthly ministry of Christ, but it also harbours the expectation of an ultimate fulfilment of Christ’s second coming with the new world of God that will replace the existing evil dispensation.
