Nem vou comentar a respeito da mortal trinca de hits - “With or Without You”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Lookin’ for” e “Where the Streets Have no Name” –, do peso de “Bullet the Blue Sky” (que anos depois rendeu uma ótima versão do Sepultura), da beleza crítica de “In God’s Country” e “Red Hill Mining Town”. Recheado de canções espetaculares - “Even Better Than the Real Thing”, “Until the End of the World”, “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”, “Misterious Ways” e, claro, “One” –, o disco funciona desde sempre como uma ponte perfeitamente bem construída ligando dois universos aparentemente inconciliáveis: o rock e a eletrônica. Dá para sacar isso até mesmo nas belas baladas “If You Wear that Velvet Dress” e “If God Will Send His Angels” e na depressiva “Wake Up, Dead Man!”. Da mesma forma, a sensibilidade demonstrada em “Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of”, “In a Little While” e “Peace on Earth” demonstram que a inspiração do quarteto estava de volta. Belo álbum! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co6WMzDOh1o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwKEdFoUB0o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19KstSgU-c0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-BT2yzXP8w HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB (2004) O tal “retorno ao básico” iniciado no disco anterior se completou nesse excelente álbum, que acabou sendo o tapa na cara que todo fã ranheta precisava tomar.

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor Mag. Dr. Julia Lajta-Novak, M.A. She made me experience that writing a diploma thesis does not need to be a lonely process, and she introduced me to new concepts of academic writing. With her professional advice and detailed feedback, she helped me write a better thesis. I would also like to give my sincere thanks to my former teachers at school who encouraged me to take up a career as a teacher myself. Martina Haslinger made me believe in my mathematical skills, and trusting her opinion was one of the best decisions so far. Secondly, I am very grateful to Monika Ortner-Bachler, who evoked my interest in the English language and introduced me to U2. Finally, I would like to thank my family – first and foremost, my parents.

  • MTO 17.3: Endrinal, Defining the Interverse
Volume 17, Number 3, October 2011 Copyright © 2011 Society for Music Theory Burning Bridges: Defining the Interverse in the Music of U2 Christopher Endrinal NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.11.17.3/mto.11.17.3.endrinal.php KEYWORDS: interverse, bridge, popular music, form, U2, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr., introduction, verse, chorus, refrain, interlude, transition, conclusion ABSTRACT: Popular music analysis, particularly pop-rock analysis, presents several challenges. Despite the repetition and seeming simplicity of the harmonic progressions in many pop-rock songs, analyzing their form can be difficult. One of these difficulties lies in the terminology used to describe the sections within a song. Specifically, the term “bridge” is troublesome because frequently it does not adequately describe the function of the section it represents. Using the music of Irish group U2, this paper defines and illustrates the “interverse,” a new term for the section traditionally called a “bridge” in pop-rock music, one that more accurately describes how the section relates to immediately preceding and succeeding material, as well as how it functions within the song as a whole. In addition to introducing new terminology, this paper also defines, illustrates, and distinguishes among the traditional sections of a pop-rock song, namely the introduction, verse, chorus, refrain, interlude, transition, and conclusion. Received February 2011 [1] The word “bridge” suggests connecting or transitional function, as in the statement “bridging the gap between point A and point B.” A physical bridge links two otherwise separate entities.
