Universitas Tanjungpura is an area with variable vegetation physiognomies that has the potential to have a lot of ant microhabitat. This study aims to determine the most effective method for collecting arboreal ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) found in the campus area of Universitas Tanjungpura. The study was conducted from August 2018 to February 2019 at ten locations based on their environmental condition. Ants were collected in three different methods: hand collecting, bait traps, and yellow pan traps. There were 39 species of Formicidae collected from all locations. These results were obtained by hand collecting (32 species), bait traps (32 species), and yellow pan traps (4 species). Hand collecting and bait traps are the most effective method for collecting arboreal ants in Universitas Tanjungpura. SRIYANI DIAS AND K. R. K. ANURADHA KOSGAMAGE Department of Zoology, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka ABSTRACT Ants are an essential biotic component in terrestrial ecosystems in Sri Lanka. Worker ants were surveyed in six forests, uncultivated lands and, vegetable and fruit fields in two Districts of the dry zone, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, from November, 2007 to October, 2008 by employing several sampling methods simultaneously along five, 100 m transects. Soil sifting, litter sifting, honey-baiting and hand collection were carried out at 5 m intervals along each transect. Twenty pitfall traps were set up throughout each site and collected after five hours. Air and soil temperatures, soil pH and soil moisture at each transect were also recorded. Use of several sampling methods yielded a higher value for species richness than just one or two methods; values for each land ranged from 19 – 43 species. Each land had its own ant community and members of Amblyoponinae, Cerapachyinae, Dorylinae, Leptanillinae and Pseudomyrmecinae were recorded for the first time from the dry zone. Previous records of 40 species belonging to 23 genera in 5 subfamilies for the Anuradhapura District are updated to 78 species belonging to 36 genera in 6 subfamilies. Seventy species belonging to thirty one genera in 9 subfamilies recorded from the first survey of ants in Polonnaruwa lands can be considered a preliminary inventory of the District; current findings updated the ant species recorded from the dry zone to 92 of 42 genera in 10 subfamilies.

This wetland area has been classified as one of six RAMSAR sites in Malaysia. This study was performed to record the number of insect fauna that can be found in the area. The focus was on three main insect groups: ants, butterflies, and odonates. The collection was conducted using general collection methods, namely baited traps and sweep netting. Overall, 36 species of insects from the three main groups were recorded. Formicidae recorded the highest number of species (21), followed by Odonata with nine species and butterflies with six. The low number of insects collected was due to the comparatively low diversity of vegetation and poor accessibility. The conditions of the waterlogged area limited the sampling collection process. Nevertheless, this is the first attempt to record insect species at Taman Negara Johor Tanjung Piai. CLOUSE Department of Organismic & Evolutionary Biology, and Museum of Comparative Zoology, Dept. of Invertebrates, Harvard University 16 Divinity Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA [email protected] Abstract—The ant fauna of Micronesia as determined from museum specimens and from collections mainly on Pohnpei Island is presented here. Around 111 species are found in the region, many of which appear to be island endemics. Palau, Pohnpei, and the Marianas rank the highest in species diversity, with Pohnpei and Palau being especially rich in apparent endemics. The Bonin Islands and Kiribati are poorly sampled, and our understanding of the ant fauna in the whole of Micronesia could benefit greatly from additional collections. Many new and interesting species are known from single collections or single specimens, even on Pohnpei, which is perhaps now the most thoroughly sampled large island in the region. The Marshall Islands contain mostly pan-Pacific and pantropical tramp species, but there do exist collections from the Marshalls (such as a series of Pheidole minors) that can only be clarified through further fieldwork. All data on specimens examined, collected, and reported, as well as a key to their identification and maps of their distributions are provided. Introduction and Methods This study began for me as a few informal collections on the island of Pohnpei. When I discovered that the Insects of Micronesia series (introduction by Gressitt 1954) was still missing a study of the formicids, I attempted to construct a study of just Pohnpei using Wilson and Taylor’s Ants of Polynesia (1967) as a model.

This wetland area has been classified as one of six RAMSAR sites in Malaysia. This study was performed to record the number of insect fauna that can be found in the area. The focus was on three main insect groups: ants, butterflies, and odonates. The collection was conducted using general collection methods, namely baited traps and sweep netting. Overall, 36 species of insects from the three main groups were recorded. Formicidae recorded the highest number of species (21), followed by Odonata with nine species and butterflies with six. The low number of insects collected was due to the comparatively low diversity of vegetation and poor accessibility. The conditions of the waterlogged area limited the sampling collection process. Nevertheless, this is the first attempt to record insect species at Taman Negara Johor Tanjung Piai. Abstract The paper highlights the status of research on ants of Sri Lanka, based on published information and ongoing research of the author. A total of 181 ant species in 61 genera have been recorded from Sri Lanka, which includes the endemic and relict monotypic genus Aneuretus. Majority of the ant species recorded from Sri Lanka belong to the subfamily Myrmicinae. The Genus Camponotus (Formicinae) includes the highest number of ant species recorded so far in the island. Their habitats vary from highly disturbed urbanized areas to undisturbed forests. They inhabit buildings and outdoors, their microhabitats extend into soil (even up to a depth of 20 cm) decaying wood, plants, trees, litter, termite nests etc. Bingham (1903) was one of the very first to publish a list and descriptions of ant species recorded from Sri Lanka.

Ants were collected from four single and isolated Shorea johorensis trees (their crowns are separated by sufficient gaps from other trees). Three sampling techniques were employed: hand sampling, branch clipping, and baited pitfall trapping. The first two methods were carried out in tree crowns that had been cut down, while the third method was done on the ground. Pitfall trapping was employed to eliminate ground-level ants around the tree from the species list of tree crown ants. A total of 160 species (4889 individuals) in 35 genera belonging to 6 subfamilies was collected from canopy strata of the four trees. Among all species collected in this study, only two were common to the four trees. The similarity in species composition between trees was very low (C = 0.09 to 0.26). However, the species diversity in each tree proved relatively high (H'= 2.56 to 3.09).
