Dimensions in cm: Height 95 x Width 50 x Depth 56 Dimensions in inches: Height 3 feet, 1 inch x Width 1 foot, 8 inches x Depth 1 foot, 10 inches Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress Mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual Mahogany was almost hidden from view. 1 / 3 anticSwiss 27/09/2021 18:12:51 http://www.anticswiss.com Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although Mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ Mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ Mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850?s, this particular variety became all but extinct. Empire style, is an early-19th-century design movement in architecture, furniture, other decorative arts, and the visual arts followed in Europe and America until around 1830. The style originated in and takes its name from the rule of Napoleon I in the First French Empire, where it was intended to idealize Napoleon's leadership and the French state. The style corresponds to the Biedermeier style in the German-speaking lands, Federal style in the United States and to the Regency style in Britain. The previous style was called Louis XVI style, in France. The Empire style was based on aspects of the Roman Empire. It is the second phase of neoclassicism which is also called "Directoire", after a goverment system. Furniture typically had symbols and ornaments borrowed from the glorious ancient Greek and Roman empires. The furniture was made from heavy woods such as mahogany and ebony, imported from the colonies, with dark finishes often with decorative bronze mounts. Marble tops were popular as were Egyptian motifs like sphinxes, griffins, urns and eagles and the Napoleonic symbols, the eagle, the bee, the initials "I" and a large "N." Gilded bronze (ormolu) details displayed a high level of craftsmanship. THE BRITISH ANTIQUE DEALERS’ ASSOCIATION The Care of Antiques & Works of Art The Care of Antiques & Works of Art Antiques have been passed down by our ancestors over the centuries to our present generation, so by their very nature have stood the test of time. They may have taken a few knocks in those earlier ages, but surprisingly, despite all our 21st-century creature comforts, it is the modern world, with its central heating and chemical cleaning products, which poses particular challenges for such objects. You may have spent a considerable sum acquiring a beautiful and valuable antique, so you do not want to throw away that investment by failing to look after it. Half the battle is knowing just when to try and remedy a defect yourself and when to leave it to the experts. Here are some basic recommendations, compiled through extensive consultation with specialists who have the greatest experience of handling antiques on a daily basis – members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association. Head of a Herm, Augustan (late 1st c. BCE—early 1st century CE), marble, 19¾‖ (w/o base); 26¾‖ (w/base). Arthur and Margaret Glasgow Endowment. This beautifully carved image of a bearded god is VMFA’s first major acquisition of ancient art in recent years and a significant addition to the museum’s holdings of Greek and Roman sculpture. As a late Hellenistic or Roman creation based on an original from the mid-fifth century BCE, this sculpture reflects the esteem later generations of artists held for the art of classical Athens. The head came from a herm, a type of sculpture that consists of a head surmounting a tall pillar with projecting posts evoking arms and an erect phallus. Early herms had a sacred character and served as distance and boundary markers with the power to ward away evil. Later herms had different type of heads, including female heads and even portraits. The form of the herm has remained part of the visual vocabulary of Western art with a wide variety of adaptations.

THE TRIUMPH OFNATURE ART NOUVEAU from the CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART TRAVELING EXHIBITION SERVICE THE TRIUMPH OFNATURE ART NOUVEAU from the CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART he florid, languorous curves, natural motifs, and refined elegance of Art Nouveau furniture, glass, and other works have entranced generations of collectors and museumgoers T since the apex of this brief but intense movement around the turn of the twentieth century. Known in Europe as Jugendstil (in Germany) and Stile Liberty (Italy), Art Nouveau has, until recently, been critically undervalued by the art establishment—due largely to its association with the decorative arts and the Decadent movement, as well as bias against its “feminine” qualities by critics of the time. An exuberant, radical style, Art Nouveau blithely trampled many of the Victorian Age’s orthodoxies of art and design, exploding age-old strictures with its fanciful approach to furniture, graphic arts, jewelry, architecture and more, while also embracing new technologies and incorporating foreign (e.g., Japanese) stylistic flourishes. It was also unabashedly luxurious and sensual. The Triumph of Nature: Art Nouveau from the Chrysler Museum of Art brings together approximately 140 of the finest Art Nouveau treasures from the uncommonly rich holdings of the Chrysler Museum of Art, drawing primarily from the gifts of Walter P. and Jean Chrysler, whose homes were once the showrooms for these opulent treasures. 1.
