Comment: Robert Copley, Christie’s International Head of and Decorative Arts, and Deputy Chairman of Christie’s UK: “The extraordinary result of this evening’s sale builds on the success of the 2008 Exceptional Sale. Far exceeding the high pre-sale estimate, this auction total doubles the previous record achieved in this category and reflects the market’s appetite for the very best rare and unique objects. This was exemplified by the superb price achieved for the four Empire ormolu-mounted Chinese porcelain baluster vases which sold to Wynn Macau Ltd.* for £7,993,250/ $12,757,227/€8,888,494. From the start, saleroom drama was high with the Chinese musical table clock being hungrily pursued by multiple bidders, ultimately realising 10 times the top estimate. The evening concluded with equal gusto when The Givenchy Royal Hanover chandelier achieved £5,753,250 / $9,182,187/ €6,397,614, more than doubling its previous record price set when Christie’s sold this work on behalf of Hubert de Givenchy in Monaco, 1993. We are proud to continue to extend and broaden the parameters of this pioneering format which has led to new clients coming to this traditional market. We look forward to The Exceptional Sale 2012.” Press Contact: Hannah Schmidt +44 207 389 2964 [email protected] * Further details available upon request
