Extracurricular Activities

Many of Kaisei students are medal winners at both national and international levels in fields as varied as the International Olympiad and the Japan Juggling Championship. For example, in the past 5 years, Kaisei students have won both Gold and Silver medals at multiple International Olympiads:

International 2015 2016 2017 2018 Olympiad Mathematics Gold Silver Informatics Silver Gold Gold Silver Geography Silver

Besides taking part in academic competitions, Kaisei students normally commit to active participation in a school competitive club (athletics, martial arts, or academic) or circle (centered around a common hobby) throughout their 3 years of high school. There are currently 75 clubs at Kaisei, each headed by a student captain – a role that functions sometimes as a coach and caretaker in the Japanese school system. Students are also members of multiple committees at Kaisei, overseeing the budget and organization of events such as the Sports Festival, the Culture Festival, excursion and service trips (domestic and abroad), as well as discipline and campus cleaning committee. All these committees are then overseen and managed by the student council.

One of the key events of the school year, and which Kaisei is well-known for, is the Sports Festival which is wholly organized and run by students. The highlight of the event is the Botaoshi, a game combining elements of rugby, sumo and martial arts (see NY Times, “The Organized Chaos of Botaoshi, Japan’s Wildest Game”, Aug. 22, 2018).
