I assembled this committee before I even knew what I wanted to write about, and I made the right choices—I cannot imagine a more supportive, patient and insightful group of advisers. They gave me badly-needed discipline when I needed it (which was all the time) and oversaw numerous episodes of Schumpeterian “creative destruction.” They also gave me more ideas than I could ever hope to assimilate, ideas which will be providing me with directions for future research for many years to come. But these huge contributions are minor in comparison to the fact that they taught me how to think like a political scientist. I couldn’t ask for anything more. All of these papers had trial runs in various internal workshops and seminars at the University of Michigan, and I profited greatly from the structured feedback that I received from the Michigan political science community, faculty and grad students alike. Paul Reeve CTIHB 323 585-9231 Office hours: T, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.; W, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. [email protected] Course Description: This course explores the historical development of Mormonism in an American context, from its Second Great Awakening beginnings to the beginning of the twenty-first century. It situates the founding and development of Mormonism within the contexts of American cultural, economic, social, religious, racial, and political history. A central theme is the ebb and flow over time of tension between Mormonism and broader American society. How did conflicts over Mormonism during the nineteenth century, especially the conflict over polygamy and theocracy, help define the limits of religious tolerance in this country? How have LDS beliefs, practices, and culture positioned and repositioned Mormons within U.S. society? Learning Outcomes: 1. To situate the development of Mormonism within broader American historical contexts and thereby arrive at a greater understanding of religion’s place in American life. a. To understand the impact of Mormonism upon American history. b. To understand the impact of American history upon Mormonism. 2. To formulate and articulate in class discussions, exams, and through written assignments intelligent and informed arguments concerning the major developments and events that have shaped Mormonism over time. 3. To cultivate the critical mind in response to a variety of historical perspectives. Perspective: This course studies Mormonism in an academic setting. In doing so our purpose is not to debate the truth or falsehood of religious claims, but rather to examine how religious beliefs and experiences functioned in the lives of individuals and communities. -
George Became a Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints As a Young Man, and Moved to Nauvoo, Illinois
George became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a young man, and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Here he met and married Thomazine Downing on August 14, 1842. George was a bricklayer, so he was busy building homes in Nauvoo and helping on the temple. When the Saints were driven out of Nauvoo in 1846, George and Thomazine moved to Winter Quarters. Here George, age 29, was asked to be a member of Brigham Young’s Vanguard Company headed to the Salt Lake Valley. They made it to the Valley on July 24, 1847. While George was gone from Winter Quarters, his brother, William Woodward, died in November 1846 at Winter Quarters. He was 37 years of age. In August 1847, George headed back to Winter Quarters, but on the way met his wife coming in the Daniel Spencer/Perrigrine Sessions Company, so he turned around and returned to the Salt Lake Valley with his wife. They arrived back in the Valley the end of September 1847. There are no children listed for George and Thomazine. In March 1857, George married Mary Ann Wallace in Salt Lake City. Mary Ann had immigrate to the Valley with her father, Neversen Grant Wallace, in the Abraham O. Smoot Company. There is one daughter listed for them, but she died at age one, in August 1872, after they had moved to St. George, Utah. George moved to St. George in the summer of 1872. For the next several years, George was busy establishing his home there and helping this community to grow. -

St. Louis Luminary: The Latter-day Saint Experience at the Mississippi River, 1854–1855 Susan Easton Black he St. Louis Luminary, an LDS newspaper printed in St. Louis, was Tshort lived but is a key to chronicling the status of the Church on the American frontier in 1854 and 1855. Although it was only one volume, the newspaper contained fifty-two issues, each spanning four pages in length with each page divided into five columns. This translates into approximately twenty-six hundred single-spaced pages on 8½" x 11" paper. From the first issue on Wednesday, November 22, 1854, to the last issue on Saturday, December 15, 1855, its masthead proclaimed the paper a “light [shining] in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not,” a refer- ence to the gospel being published in the Luminary in the “gentile” city of St. Louis. A new book, The Best of the St. Louis Luminary, gives an in-depth history of the newspaper and its contents, and includes a DVD of scans of the entire volume of the newspaper in a searchable format. This article is excerpted from that book. Because of the years in which this newspaper was printed, it played a significant role in the national discussion of polygamy, which had not been publicly announced until 1852.1 The paper printed an unrelenting defense of polygamy against a backdrop of exaggerated reports and sensational claims that stemmed from the halls of Congress and from eastern newspapers. Editor Erastus Snow did not hesitate to confront politicians, newspaper col- umnists, or even the president of the United States on the issue. -

Pratt Much has been written about the Mormon pioneer company that went to the Great Basin in 1847. Little has been written about the large immi- gration group that followed, organized principally by Parley P. Pratt. Returning from England in April 1847, Apostle Pratt, together with John Taylor and Orson Hyde, successfully closed the Joint Stock Company, an ill-fated English trading company started by Reuben Hedlock, Thomas Ward, and Wilford Woodruff.1 Arriving in Winter Quarters just when Brigham Young and the pioneers were leaving for the West, Parley, and to a lesser extent John Taylor, reorganized and enlarged the companies for emigration west, negotiated with the Omaha and Otoe Indians and the U.S. government Indian agents to protect the Mormons’ cattle from Indian attack, and tried to make Winter Quarters more economically efficient. They also dealt with difficult problems concerning plural marriage and wrestled with the question of leadership and authority in the absence of Brigham Young. The Indian Problem When Parley arrived at Winter Quarters on 8 April 1847, he found the Mormons in conflict with the Omaha and Otoe Indians and the Indian agents. The Mormons had received permission from the government to stay on Potawatomi lands on the east side of the Missouri River but had failed to gain government permission to stay on Omaha lands on the west side.2 The Mormons had entered into agreements with the Indians them- selves to haul corn to the Indians and to provide protection in exchange for the use of their land. -

Spencer (1838-1918) served as a Mormon missionary in England and was an early settler of the town of Orderville, Utah. The collection contains eighteen letters, the majority of which are written by Spencer to his family while he was serving as a missionary in England. Also included is one letter written to Spencer by Brigham Young Jr. while Young was in England. The letters discuss Spencer's life in England, family news, and religion. Biography Howard Orson Spencer was born on June 16, 1838 to Orson and Catherine Curtis Spencer in Middlefield, Massachusetts. He served as a Mormon missionary in England from 1869-1870 and 1877-1879. According to his sister's book, Life Sketches of Orson Spencer: "In the Fall of 1874, he [Howard] was called by President Young to go to Long Valley in the southern part of Utah and preside. -

Bury 1 In the second year of his reign as King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, Nebuchadnezzar II dreamt of a large stone that rolled down the side of a mountain, shattered a great metallic statue, and grew into a mountain range large enough to cover the earth. The accomplished ruler, who went on to oversee the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, as well as the destruction of Jerusalem’s Jewish temple, was no revelator, and so enlisted Daniel, an exiled Jew, to interpret his dream. According to Daniel, the statue, divided into five parts from head to toe, portrayed mankind’s present and future kingdoms. The last, represented by the statue’s iron and clay feet, would be “a divided kingdom.” Unable to unify, “the kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. -

Perkins On 17 July1846, one day after Captain James Allen had mustered in the Mormon Battalion, U.S. Army of the West, Brigham Young called eighty- nine bishops1 to look after the wives and families of the Mormon Battalion.2 Among the group called were Ute Perkins (1816–1901), a thirty-year-old member of seven years, his uncles, William G. Perkins and John Vance, and his first cousin, Andrew H. Perkins. Until Nauvoo, the Church’s two general bishops, Bishop Newel K. Whitney in Kirtland and Bishop Edward Partridge in Missouri, bore as their major responsibility the challenge to care for the poor and needy. In Nauvoo, in addition to the general bishops, the Church initiated the prac- tice of assigning bishops to aid the poor within Nauvoo’s municipal wards— hence the beginnings of ward bishops. During the trek west, as the calling of these eighty-nine bishops shows, the commitment to calling local bishops to care for small membership groupings was underway and became enough of an established practice that in Utah it became standard Church administra- tive practice—a presiding bishopric at the general level and ward bishops at the local level. Therefore, study of the bishops’ work during the Winter Quarters period deserves historical attention, to which effort the following material contributes.3 Ute Perkins lived in a temporary Mormon encampment called Pleasant Valley, where his father Absalom was the branch president. -

The author of the initial contribution in the series is Associate Professor of History of Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois. He has been engaged in research on the Nauvoo period of the Mormon Church since he came to the university in 1959 and has published numerous articles on this subject.
