Mountains of the World Objectives Vocabulary Lesson

World Map and Globe - Lesson 15 (K-3) Mountains of the World Using the World Physical Map, the students will locate one major Objectives mountain range on each continent. (except Antarctica) Vocabulary mountain, physical map Materials Needed World Physical Map and the following seven post-it-notes: Rocky Mountains Andes Mountains Alps Mountains Ural Mountains Atlas Mountains Himalayas Mountains Great Dividing Mountains Lesson Pull down the World Physical Map. Review with the students the meaning of the colors used on the physical map. Also ask the students that today they will learn about mountains around the world. There are many different mountains ranges located throughout the world. These mountain ranges have a name to identify them just as cities are named. Tell the students they will learn the location and name of one mountain range on each continent except Antarctica. Circle North America on the map. Have the students suggest where the largest mountain range in North American is located. Tell the students the name of the mountain range is the Rocky Mountains. Use the Rocky Mountains post-it-note and place it over the location of the Rocky Mountains on the map. Follow the same procedure for the rest of the continents. Identify the continent. Suggest where mountains may be located. Apply the sticker. The mountain ranges and the correct continent are as follows: Rocky Mountains - Western North America Andes Mountains - Western South America Alps Mountains - Central Europe Ural Mountains - Divides Europe and Asia Atlas Mountains - Northern Africa Himalayas Mountains - South Central Asia Great Dividing Mountains - Eastern Australia © Copyrighted Property Of George F. Reche 1 Remote lakes are usually unaffected by direct human infl uence, yet they receive inputs of atmospheric pollutants, dust, and other aerosols, both inorganic and organic. In remote, alpine lakes, these atmospheric inputs may infl uence the pool of dissolved organic matter, a critical constituent for the biogeochemical functioning of aquatic ecosystems. Here, to assess this infl uence, we evaluate factors related to aerosol deposition, climate, catchment properties, and microbial constituents in a global dataset of 86 alpine and polar lakes. We show signifi cant latitudinal trends in dissolved organic matter quantity and quality, and uncover new evidence that this geographic pattern is infl uenced by dust deposition, fl ux of incident ultraviolet radiation, and bacterial processing. Physical Regions of Africa The Atlas Mountains, located in the far northwest, are the longest mountain range in Africa. They create a rain shadow, where the inland side of the Atlas Mountains experience much less rain than the ocean side. The Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. It covers 3,500,000 square miles of northern Africa. The Sahara Desert is made up of different types of land surfaces: ergs, (windblown sand dunes); wadis (dry streambeds); gravel plains; hammadas (rocky plateaus); and mountains. South of the Sahara is the Sahel which is a steppe area with small trees and grasses. The Sahel is a fragile land, resting between true desert and savanna. The Sahel has been gradually turning into desert due to years of drought, overgrazing and poor land management. The savannas of Africa are tropical grasslands with scattered trees. Savannas have definite wet and dry seasons. Many of Africa’s animals live in this region. Savanna land preserves have been set up to help protect the animals from poachers. The savanna belts of Africa are located both north and south of the tropical rainforest region of central Africa. The tropical rainforests are located near the equator. Treetops of the rain forest form a canopy, or an umbrella-like cover of vegetation. The canopy lets very little sun light filter to the ground. Because of the lack of sunlight, the forest floor has very little plant life. Over 750 different types of trees live in the rainforest. The rainforest is being cut down for its precious wood.

96 The Atlas Mountains. and at 5.30 A.M. we were on the lower edge of the crater, a keen N. wind, temperature 15° (F.), a slight sulphur smell in the air, and an absolutely perfect view. McAllister had never been beyond this point, much to our surprise, but we were all soon on our way round the E. side of the crater to the summit. From 7 A.M. till nearly 9 we stayed on the bare summit, the sun warm and the air almost motionless. Orizaba, Malinche, Ixtaccihuatl, Nevado de Toluca, and, we thought, the very distant Sierra Madre del Sur, all stood out clearly, as well as Mexico City and Amecameca to the N. and Puebla to the S. The crater was roaring steam from several vents it has since been in mild eruption. Returning to camp at aboD:t 11.30 we were waited upon by a dozen or so doubtful-looking characters, all armed, who said they wanted our money but had to be .content with cigarettes. After a horribly dusty ride of 4 hours to Amecameca we were lucky in securing a car to get us back to Mexico City in time for dinner.
