The Golden Raspberry Awards

Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1. Every year the - more commonly referred to as the "Oscars" - are held in Los Angeles to recognize the work of powerful films and talented actors. Less well known, perhaps, are the Golden Raspberry Awards, or the "Razzies." This ceremony is also held annually in Los Angeles, but it takes place one day before the Academy Awards. It is a "mock" ceremony, meaning that its main purpose is to make fun of particularly bad movies and cast members. The worst cinematic failures are presented with a giant golden raspberry. (The phrase "blow a raspberry" means to make a rude sound using your lips and tongue.)

2. The very first Razzies ceremony was held in 1981 - just after the completion of the 53rd Academy Awards - in the living room of a publicist named John J.B. Wilson. He wore an unfashionable tuxedo and had a giant foam ball on top of a stick that he used as a microphone. Every year after that attendance doubled, and after the fourth Raspberry ceremony, major news outlets like CNN began coverage of the events. Voters are all members of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, and they are journalists, film fans, and other employees of the film industry. Naturally, it is very rare for a celebrity to actually come and accept an award, although and action star The Rock are both exceptions to this.

3. The 38th annual Golden Raspberry awards were announced in early March 2018. At the ceremony, "" made history for winning awards not only for Worst Picture and Worst Director, but also for Worst Screenplay. Also, this award season was controversial because Jennifer Lawrence was nominated as Worst Actress for her performance in "Mother!", despite the fact that many fans considered this to be the best performance of her career. It may not be a happy experience to receive a Razzie, but many past recipients have also won Academy awards. So, getting a Golden Raspberry is not a career ender. On the contrary, it could even generate publicity for a film.

18 Questions

1. Generally, how does the author feel about the Razzie Awards? a) They are as popular as the Academy Awards. b) They are a waste of time and money. c) They are controversial, but sometimes helpful. d) None of the above.

2. Which of the following is mentioned in the first paragraph? a) The meaning of "blow a raspberry". b) The location of the Razzie ceremony. c) The reason for holding the Razzie ceremony. d) All of the above.

19 Reading B

Birthdays

Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1. "When is your birthday?" This is a question that you might ask when getting to know someone for the first time. Although most people do not mind giving the day and month of their birth, some people do not like giving the year because it reveals their age. Technically speaking, if you include the year of your birth, this is your "birthdate," whereas your "birthday" is simply the day and month of your birth. Interestingly, in a room of 23 people, there is a 50% chance that two people will have the same birthday. If there are 75 people in a room, there is a 99.99% chance that two people will have identical birthdays.

2. Many cultures have different traditions related to birthdays. For example, in Nepal and India, a child's hair is shaved. This is supposed to represent a cleansing of the soul and a purification of past lives. In Japan there is a "Coming-of-Age Day," which is a special celebration for those who have turned 20 years of age. The young people generally wear kimonos on this day, and after a special ceremony they get together to drink and eat and celebrate the future. The 60th, 77th, and 88th birthdays are also regarded as special in Japan. In the United Kingdom, the royal family sends birthday cards to those celebrating their 100th and 105th birthdays.

3. Did you know that everybody in Korea has the same birthday? It's true. Every Korean person's age increases by one year on New Year's Day. Also, every baby born in Korea is automatically one year old. As a result, someone's Korean age is always one or two years older than their western age. This has some interesting implications. Imagine, for example, that a Korean baby is born on December 31st. He would immediately be one year old. The next day, because everybody's age changes on January 1st, that baby would become two years old. On the other hand, in America, this same baby would only be 2 days old.

4. There have been a number of incredibly extravagant birthday parties over the years. In 1720, the Chinese emperor held the Manchu Han Imperial Feast. The party lasted for 3 full days, and during that time more than 2500 guests stuffed themselves with wine and hundreds of different delicacies. While there was standard fare, such as roast duck, there were also some culinary curiosities, including bear paws, camel humps, bird nests, leopard fetuses, and monkey brains. In any case, whether you are a Chinese emperor, or an ordinary kid blowing out candles on your birthday cake, it is nice to be recognized - at least once a year.

20 Questions

2. Which of the following is not mentioned in the first paragraph? a) The definition of "birthday". b) The probability of finding two people with identical birthdays. c) The author's birthday. d) A reference to how some people react when asked about their birthday.

3. According to the second paragraph, which of the following is false? a) In the U.K., the royal family recognizes certain birthdays. b) In Japan, certain ages are more special than others. c) All cultures have the same tradition for celebrating birthdays. d) In some countries, children have their heads shaved on their birthdays.

4. According to the third paragraph, which of the following is true in Korea? a) A baby born on January 1st is described as "one day old." b) A baby born on January 1st is described as "three years old." c) A baby born on December 31st is described as "two years old." d) A baby born on December 31st is described as "one year old."

5. What is the meaning of the final sentence in paragraph four? a) Birthdays are especially important in China. b) Birthdays are usually a pleasant experience. c) Only young children like birthdays. d) It is common to eat strange food on your birthday.
