'Soils' and 'Vegetation'?
Is there a close association between ‘soils’ and ‘vegetation’? A case study from central western New South Wales M.O. Rankin1, 3, W.S Semple2, B.W. Murphy1 and T.B. Koen1 1 Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 445, Cowra, NSW 2794, AUSTRALIA 2 Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 53, Orange, NSW 2800, AUSTRALIA 3 Corresponding author, email: [email protected] Abstract: The assumption that ‘soils’ and ‘vegetation’ are closely associated was tested by describing soils and vegetation along a Travelling Stock Reserve west of Grenfell, New South Wales (lat 33° 55’S, long 147° 45’E). The transect was selected on the basis of (a) minimising the effects of non-soil factors (human interference, climate and relief) on vegetation and (b) the presence of various soil and vegetation types as indicated by previous mapping. ‘Soils’ were considered at three levels: soil landscapes (a broad mapping unit widely used in central western NSW), soil types (according to a range of classifications) and soil properties (depth, pH, etc.). ‘Vegetation’ was considered in three ways: vegetation type (in various classifications), density/floristic indices (density of woody species, abundance of native species, etc.) and presence/absence of individual species. Sites along the transect were grouped according to soil landscapes or soil types and compared to vegetation types or indices recorded at the sites. Various measures indicated low associations between vegetation types and soil landscapes or soil types. Except for infrequent occurrences of a soil type or landscape, any one soil type or landscape was commonly associated with a number of vegetation types and any one vegetation type was associated with a number of soil landscapes or soil types. -
New Taxa and Combinations in the Myoporaceae

Abstract Two new subspecies in Myoporum, M. boninerzse subsp. australe and M. platycarpum subsp. perbellum and two new subspecies in Eremophiia, Eremophila bowmanii subsp nutans and E. divaricata subsp. ccdlewatta are described. The following new combinations are made: Eremophila debilis, Eremophila bowmanii subsp. latifolia, Eremophila oppositifolia subsp. rubra and Eremophila latrobei subsp. glabra. In preparation for the Myoporaceae treatment in volume 3 of the Flora of New South Wales expected to appear soon the following new subspecies are described and new combinations made. 1. Syd. Region edn 3: 507 (1982). a subsp. boninensi corolla intra hirsuta, floribus (1-) 2-5 (-8) in axillis differt. Type: north side of Batemans Bay, New South Wales, R.J. Chinnock 6654, 8.ii.1986 (holotype: AD; isotypes: BRI, NSW, TI). Notes The cultivated plant upon which Andrews based Pogonia glabra originated from New Holland and was first raised from seed in England by a Mr Robertson in 1790. The plant depicted in Andrew's plate was drawn at the Hammersmith Nursery and as far as I can determine no pressed specimen was preserved. -

Diameter Shaft and Fans Installation Environmental Risk Assessment 1 PURPOSE & SCOPE The purpose of the risk assessment is to identify the risks, and the controls required to be put in place, to enable the installation of a 5.5m diameter upcast ventilation shaft, fans and associated infrastructure. The scope was limited to environmental and community risks, applicable to the built and natural environment (onsite and offsite), and including public safety (but not ACOL OHS risk or operational asset damage). 2 BACKGROUND ACOL proposes to construct a new 5.5 metre diameter upcast ventilation shaft and install associated extraction fans and ancillary surface infrastructure. This project enables the establishment of sufficient ventilation capacity for the ACOL to safely continue mining operations for a further 12 to 14 years. The proposed site for the planned new main ventilation shaft and fans is located on ACOL owned property, on the surface above the start of longwall block one. The total mine airflow quantity provided by the existing two main fans and backroad supplementary fan combination is estimated to be limited to a maximum of 190m3/s. However, expert consultation has confirmed a requirement to upgrade the mine’s ventilation system to provide between 290m3/s and 365m3/s total volumetric capacity, to safely meet future demands. -

MAY 2008. ______________________________________________________________________ 323 Philp Ave Frenchville Qld. 30/5/2008 Dear Members and subscribers, "Be careful what you wish for." After years of unfulfilled wishes for a "proper wet season", we were finally rewarded early this year. The Heavens opened, and the rain fell. The rivers filled, and Rockhampton's mighty Fitzroy flooded not once, but twice! However, it was not the double peaked six week flood that caused havoc (we're used to that, and it was pretty standard as Rocky floods go), but the two intervening downpours which proved too much for town drainage systems, blocked with debris after years of drought, to handle. There was flash flooding in many suburbs, but the areas which suffered most were the new housing developments where the natural drainage lines had been piped and filled, and which are full of brick houses on cement slabs. The older style Queenslanders on their high bases survived virtually unscathed, as always. The other relevant factor I think, is the high proportion of paved ground (roads, paths, courtyards, house and garage slabs) which leaves little natural surface for the rainwater to soak into, and minimal gardens. Unfortunately, in the aftermath, a large number of mature trees, both natives and exotics, have slowly turned up their toes and died or are dying from the top down. It appears that after so many years of adaptation to drought conditions, the prolonged waterlogging stressed the trees so much they were easy prey to a root fungus, which did not succumb to the various treatments tried. -

Sc.) 2012 A Thesis submitted for the award of Master of Science i ABSTRACT Eucalypt woodlands in agricultural landscapes in Queensland have significantly declined in extent and condition in recent years. One particular ecosystem, poplar box (Eucalyptus populnea F.Muell.) woodland, has experienced declining tree condition, function and recruitment, which threaten the ecosystem’s on-going persistence. To aid the persistence of these systems, knowledge of how agricultural land uses affect their condition, biodiversity and provision of ecological function is required. Most studies of biodiversity and ecological function in agricultural landscapes focus on either the role of characteristics within a patch of vegetation, or occasionally the characteristics of the surrounding landscape, but rarely on these factors in combination. However, studies have shown that both patch and landscape factors can be important and may explain significantly more of the variation in biodiversity, condition and function than patch factors (or landscape factors) alone. This study examines trends in community (floristic composition and stand structure) and population (dominant tree condition and population structure) level processes in relation to both patch and landscape factors, and asks the question: Do both patch and landscape factors contribute to patterns in health of remnant vegetation in agricultural landscapes? This study uses two complementary approaches; an a priori (natural) experiment and a correlative study. To examine the effects of agricultural land uses at the patch scale (patch grazing) and in the surrounding landscape (land use context), an a priori design was implemented. -

Introduction GHD Pty Ltd and LAMR Pty Ltd undertook a field survey of potential habitats for rare and threatened flora along the alignment of the proposed “Missing Link” rail line between the existing rail loops at the BMA coal mine of Goonyella Riverside in the south and the Xstrata coal mine Newlands in the north. The aim of this study was to: · Survey the nature, extent, condition and values of habitats and ecosystems, and the known or likely occurrence of rare and threatened flora species, with particular focus on those of conservation concern at State and Commonwealth levels. In addition, it rapidly became apparent that there was a need to review and revise existing Regional Ecosystem mapping along the alignment. The accompanying photo essay and map products clearly indicate a number of substantial differences between the current certified mapping, the results of the recently completed detailed flora and fauna study and the observations made for this study. Casual observations of fauna and the results of recent fauna studies indicate that the fauna studies may also require similar, additional, inputs to satisfy the assessment process for the proposed “Missing Link” rail connection. The study area refers generally to the lands surrounding the proposed rail alignment. The Brigalow Belt Bioregion is defined as one of 13 biogeographical areas of Queensland, which extends from the Queensland•New South Wales border to Townsville. -

Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) (s266B) Draft Conservation Advice (including listing advice) for the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the EPBC Act and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided its advice on the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains ecological community to the Minister as a draft of this <approved> conservation advice. In <year>, the Minister <accepted/rejected> the Committee’s advice, <and adopted this document as the approved conservation advice>. 3. <If accepted> The Minister amended the list of threatened ecological communities under section 184 of the EPBC Act to include the Poplar Box Grassy Woodland on Alluvial Plains ecological community in the <Endangered> category. It is noted that components of this ecological community are listed as threatened in Queensland. 4. <A draft conservation advice for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community.> 5. This <approved> conservation advice has been developed based on the best available information <at the time it was approved>; this includes scientific literature, advice from consultations, and existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this ecological community.
