The contribution analyzes, grounded on an historic approach, the most competitive period in Switzerland, 2008, when not less than five freesheets were competing for advertisers and public attention. By using Alt- meppen’s (2006) organizational theory, the paper offers a theoretical frame able to describe the vanishing co-orientation between the media management and the newsroom, a trend that aggravates commercialization processes in news or- ganizations. In a situation of economic turmoil, so the hypothesis, newsrooms are more inclined to positively adapt the valence of their coverage about their main advertisers in order to keep them in the portfolio. Using a content analysis, the author examined the editorial coverage of six among the most important advertisers of Swiss free newspapers, carrying out an aggregated statistical analysis based on logistic regression. The study revealed that free newspapers with a strong market orientation display a higher chance to publish positive facts and evaluations about advertisers with a high adver- tising expenditure. October 2018 The history of Tamedia The Tages-Anzeiger was founded in 1893 The first newspapers – from today’s perspective – published at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1893, Wilhelm Girardet, a publisher, sets up the Tages-Anzeiger together with editor Fritz Walz. On 2 March, the first issue is published, then widely distributed free of charge for one month. In 1902, due to its huge success, the company moves to its present location on Zurich Werdstrasse. The history of Tamedia Growth in the 20th century and stock market flotation The company continues to grow through takeovers and in-house developments. The printing facility in Zurich opens in 1984, the one in Lausanne in 1989, and Berne in 2005. On 2 October 2000, the company goes public with a new name, Tamedia AG. As of 2003, Tamedia progressively increases its involvement in the media brand 20 Minuten. The history of Tamedia Mergers and takeovers in the new millennium In 2007, Tamedia merges with Espace Media Groupe, Berne. In April 2010, Tamedia takes over Zürichsee-Zeitung and Zürcher Unterländer from the NZZ group. In 2011, Edipresse Suisse and Tamedia merge their businesses as previously announced in 2009. In 2014, Der Landbote joins the family of Tamedia’s newspapers, Basler Zeitung follows in 2018. Introduction For the present inquiry of the performance of the news media as watch- dogs of democracy in five countries (the Netherlands, Germany, Switzer- land, Portugal, Lithuania), the bulk of the data was collected via desk research. Additionally, the researchers sought to fill any remaining gaps with complementary information gathered from interviews with media professionals, from a variety of publications such as official government documents, scholarly articles, and websites of the media institutions in- vestigated in the study. Overall, the year of reference for the evidence Author's Copy collected was 2006. Furthermore, in the spring of 2008, expert interviews Author's Copy were conducted with key people whose inside knowledge has helped the researchers to evaluate and comment on a number of indicators. Among the 114 factors where we place first are Ability to Attract and Retain Talent, IP Protection, and Capacity for Innovation. (more) Switzerland receives good grades in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2017, released by Transparency International. Compared to last year’s ranking, the country jumped from fifth to third place. New Zealand and Denmark claim the top spots, the U.S. ranks 16th. (more) Switzerland retains the top position in the Global Talent Competitiveness Index 2018, published by INSEAD, which in addition ranks Zurich as first among 90 worldwide cities assessed.
