Walking Group August – October 2015
WALKING GROUP AUGUST – OCTOBER 2015 On 15th August 4 Holy Strollers undertook a circular walk from Ceres to Scotstarvit Tower via Craigrothie and Hill of Tarvit Estate. On leaving the car park behind the Fife Folk Museum we walked along a quiet lane historically called the Waterless Road. It used to be the road from St Andrews to the Pettycur – Edinburgh ferry. Archbishop Sharp came this way shortly before his assassination by Covenanters on Magus Moor in May 1679. Looking across the fields we had a good view of Hill of Tarvit and the monument on top commemorating Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. After Denhead Farm we went down a very muddy footpath to reach Craigrothie and then over a picturesque arched packhorse bridge. We entered Hill of Tarvit Estate by the east gate and stopped in a wooded area for a coffee break and watched play on Kingarrock Hickory Golf Course. It was a short walk from here to Scotstarvit Tower which was built in the 16th century and is renowned as the home of Sir John Scot. Tower houses several storeys high were the typical residences of the Scottish landed gentry in the late Middle Ages. Scotstarvit has six floors linked by a spiral stair. There is something quirky about it as there is no kitchen, one room has no fireplace and another has no windows. We returned to Hill of Tarvit by the west drive and sat in the Rose Garden to have our picnic lunch. We left Hill of Tarvit by the east drive and walked along a busy main road before turning up the drive to Whitehill Farm.

However one outing had to be cancelled owing to extremely bad weather and another one was conducted from the car, but never mind; more fortunate next year!! All was not “Gloom and Doom” however and the majority of the outings were not rained off – Dollarbeg to Arndean was the only one completely cancelled and is rescheduled for the end of September. The Saturday outings proved to be popular, as well as that to The National Galleries of Scotland - all of the outings and walks have been written up in this newsletter.

November 2008 22/10/2008 3:27 pm Page 1 THE FURNITURE HISTORY SOCIETY Newsletter No. 172 November 2008 CABINET RETURNS TO BECKFORD’S TOWER The ability to illustrate to today’s visitor what the interiors of William Beckford’s study retreat at Lansdown Tower in Bath would have been like when they were created in 1828 has long been an essential aim of the Beckford Tower Trust. It is an aim made difficult by the fact that much of the original interiors and fittings of the building were stripped and sold following Beckford’s death in 1844. What was not sold was then destroyed by fire in 1931, leaving the Belvidere at the very top of the Tower as the only historic interior remaining in the building. With the help of contemporary illustrations it is possible to show what the rooms at Lans- down Tower were like in the year of Beckford’s death. However, being able to display original pieces of furniture designed specifically for the building is essential in order to fully convey to the visitor what was so significant about Beckford as a collector and the spaces he created. It was with this in mind that the Beckford Tower Trust embarked on a successful campaign to purchase an oak wall-mounted cabinet believed to have been made for Beckford and return it to the Tower. The cabinet reflects the development of Beckford’s taste in the later period of his life while living in Bath, and was most probably designed by Henry Edmund Goodridge (1797- 1864), the architect of Lansdown Tower.

The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art NORFOLK, YORKSHIRE & SCOTLAND: COUNTRY HOUSES OF SIR EDWIN LUTYENS & SIR ROBERT LORIMER May 17 – 25, 2012 Arranged by Classical Excursions Architectural historian and Lutyens tour leader extraordinaire Paul Waite opens the article he wrote for the Institute’s Fall 2011 issue of The Forum with this comment, “The theme of our tour for the ICAA [May 19 – 26, 2011] was diversity, suitability, dexterous skill, and craftsmanship. Of course we were looking at the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens….” Paul, who is a trustee of The Lutyens Trust, will expand upon this theme by taking us this time to such North England counties as Norfolk and Yorkshire and to Scotland. He has arranged for us to see another glorious array of private country houses by Lutyens, but also to introduce us to the architectural treasures of Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, who is known as “the Lutyens of Scotland”. Lutyens (1869 – 1944) is considered one of England’s greatest and most prolific architects with more than 600 commissions in Great Britain, Europe, South Africa, India and the United States. Beginning at the age of nineteen with little formal education or architectural training, his career lasted more than half a century, from the time of Queen Victoria to World War II. Michael Barker states in his booklet Sir Edwin Lutyens, “His work, while romantic in inspiration, became classical in discipline, yet complex and often abstract in design, and was always executed with excellent craftsmanship, using fine materials.” Lutyens is an icon with American architects and designers, especially as the architect of fabulous country houses, for their originality and durability of style.

Robert Lorimer's Use of Timber, David Jones
ROBERT LORIMER’S USE OF TIMBER David Jones i. Sir Robert Stodart Lorimer, architect and furniture designer (1864-1929). This article is about Robert Lorimer’s use of timber in his furniture made in Scotland at the beginning of the twentieth century. Chairs that were inspired by local country models have been chosen as a good vehicle for discussion. As he spent much of his time in the Kingdom of Fife, the young Lorimer was aware of the sixteenth and seventeenth century tradition of caqueteuse chairs made in oak. These had wide, flaring seats, curved, pincer-like arms on column supports and decorated backs, sometimes with elaborate crestings. Examples survived in domestic collections, but also in official roles, such as councillors’ or baillies’ chairs used in Fife’s coastal Burgh towns.1 In 1904, working for the Earl of Crawford in the building of a new Estate Office at Balcarres, Fife, Lorimer had made a facsimile of a caqueteuse from the old Baillies’ offices in nearby St Monans. (Figure 2). Several things are interesting about this chair. Firstly, Lorimer was making a nod to tradition in reproducing an old east coast favourite, a type that had been brought to the attention of designers in 1878 by John Small, in his ground breaking work of Scottish furniture history, Scottish Woodwork of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth CenturiesS Such a historical quotation was appropriate for new furniture made for an ancient estate with an impeccable pedigree and the carved motifs employed were very much part of a local vocabulary. He had the new chair left ‘in the white’, that is not stained or artificially darkened to appear old, but presented in a clean state, unadulterated apart from a very light oiled finish.
