Sino-Greek Relations in Greek and Chinese Media, 2020
‘ Sino-Greek Relations in Greek and Chinese Media, 2020 Plamen Tonchev Research Associates: Pavlos Petidis, Yuliana Porja, Yannis Yannopoulos March 2021 FOREWORD The Institute of International Economic Relations (IIER) has carried out systematic research into Sino-Greek relations in recent years, including in-depth studies of ‘Chinese Investment in Greece and the Big Picture of Sino-Greek Relations’ (2017) and ‘China’s Image in Greece, 2008-2018’. Since 2016, the institute has regularly contributed chapters on Greece to the annual reports released by the European Think-tank Network on China (ETNC). This report is yet another step forward in enriching IIER’s China expertise. What is qualitatively new about this specific research is the comparative analysis of Greek and Chinese media in 2020 and early 2021. It is hoped that the report will contribute to a growing body of international literature on the crucial role of media in shaping perceptions and, in particular, the way China projects its narratives as foreign policy tools. The study is based on a mix of: (i) quantitative media monitoring within a representative sample of influential Greek print media outlets, while several TV channels are also covered by the research; (ii) a qualitative appraisal of Greece-related themes presented by major Chinese media; (iii) comparative analysis of media coverage of the two countries and their relations by Greek and Chinese media. After an extensive review of data on both sides, the team dove beneath the surface for possible explanations of the trends identified. The research methodology is presented in the Annex. While writing this report, the authors have identified areas for further research into the specific audience targeted by Chinese media in Greece or appropriate metrics that could help capture the effectiveness of China’s policies in the media sector. -
Race, Religion, and Afghan Refugees' Practices of Care in Greece
14 Race, Religion, and Afghan Refugees’ Practices of Care in Greece Zareena A. Grewal Introduction: Muslims and the Politics of Recognition in Greece On 7 June 2019, Greek Education and Religious Affairs minister Costas Gavroglou addressed a crowd of about one hundred Muslims, journalists, and state offi cials at the “inauguration” of the government’s partially con- structed, purpose-built mosque in Athens: “Athens now has a dignifi ed place of worship for Muslims whether they are citizens or migrants, refugees, or visitors. The right to pray to the god you believe in, like the right of a child to go to school, does not depend on the circumstances under which some- one arrived here. Everyone has these rights. They are non-negotiable hu- man rights” (Speed 2019). By 2019, there were nearly 300,000 Muslims in Athens, yet it remained the only European capital without an operational mosque. After the offer of Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd to build an exqui- site mosque in Athens was refused, a 2006 presidential decree committed the Greek government to build the fi rst mosque in the city since Ottoman rule ended in 1821. Numerous delays halted construction, including in 2014 when contractors refused to take on the project out of fear of violent attacks from members of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party; Muslims are the most frequent targets of their racist attacks (Palivos 2018: 272). With the leftist SYRIZA party’s electoral success in 2015, plans for building a mosque re- This open access edition has been made available under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, thanks to the support of Knowledge Unlatched. -
The Greek New Right and the Eve of Conservative Populism
The Visio Journal ● Volume 4 ● 2019 The Greek New Right and the Eve of Conservative Populism By Athanasios Grammenos* The economic crisis in the Eurozone and its dire consequences for Greece terminated the post-1974 political consensus, which was based on a pro-European and democratic concord. The collapse of the social-democratic Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) in 2012 allowed space for the radical Left to become the new pole of the political system. To this advancement, the conservatives, being the other pole, responded with a prompt enlargement attempt to the populist right-wing, engulfing several elements of the New Right. This new political order had had evident effects on the party’s social and economic agenda, escalating the political debate at the expense of established liberal principles. While in opposition (2015-2019), New Democracy (ND), member of the European Peo- ple’s Party (EPP) in the European Parliament, voted against a series of liberal bills (gender issues, separation of Church and State, the Macedonian issue, etc.) giving out positions with authoritarian and populist essence. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the rise of the New Right in Greece (2012-2019) in both rhetoric and practice, and its consequences for law institutions, human rights and foreign affairs. It is argued that ND, currently holding office, has been occupied by deeply conservative elements as a response to the rise of the radical Left, adopting occasionally ultra-conservative positions in a wide range of social issues. Although the case of Greece is unlike to those in other European countries, nevertheless, to the extent to which the preservation of traditional hierarchies come into question, the political platform of the Greek New Right, which has embedded authoritarian attitudes cultivating an anti-liberal sub-culture to the party’s voters, is in accordance with several European conservative movements like in Hungary, Austria or Czechia. -

The Greek Wildfires: What Went Wrong and What Can Be Fixed?
https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/8/19/the-greek-wildfires-and-the-way-forward The Greek wildfires: What went wrong and what can be fixed? An executive state and an elite whose priority is profit-making cannot lead the way in the struggle against wildfires. Matthaios Tsimitakis 19 Aug 2021 A man watches the flames as a wildfire approaches Kochyli beach near Limni village on the island of Evia in Greece on August 6, 2021 [Thodoris Nikolaou/AP] For a third week wildfires are burning in Greece and there seems to be no end in sight for this summer of disaster. Attica is ablaze once again, this time in the southeast, and fires are burning near Sounio and northwest of Athens at Vilia. Firefighters are up against a 20km fire front. People are fleeing their homes once again and many are afraid that this will critically affect the environment and air quality of the capital city, Athens. During the past month, over 58 major wildfires broke out across Greece, destroying a quarter of a million acres of forests. The number of fires this year is 26 percent above the average of the past 12 years, but the area burned dwarfs the average by a staggering 450 percent, fitting a pattern of destruction that is now seen across the Mediterranean region. The northern part of Evia island became the showcase of global climate collapse for a week this August, as nearly a quarter of the island burned. But the magnitude of the destruction cannot be attributed to the climate crisis alone. -
Golden Dawn and the Deafening Silence of Europe
Analysis Golden Dawn and the deafening silence of Europe Jerome Roos, editor, ROAR online magazine With a neo-Nazi party on the rise in Greece, it seems that even a Weimar-like scenario might be tolerable for EU leaders insisting on further austerity. “For Peace, Freedom and Democracy. Never Again Fascism. Millions of Dead Remind Us.” Those are the words carved into a memorial stone underneath the Austrian house where Adolf Hitler was born in 1889. “Never Again.” This was the uniform slogan resounding across Europe after the full scale of Nazi atrocities became known in the wake of World War Two (WWII). The cosmopolitan project of European integration was founded upon this promise. Never again would fascists and warmongers be allowed to tear the Old Continent and its people apart. One day it may therefore be considered one of history’s greatest ironies that, as EU leaders were busy deciding who would collect its Nobel Prize for “the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights,” those same leaders remained woefully silent when a recent survey indicated that the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party now polls third [1] in Greece, at 14 percent. This is a showing comparable to that of Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers’ Party in 1930, three years before rising to power and setting the world on course for WWII. For clarity’s sake: the comparison made between National Socialism and Golden Dawn is by no means an exaggeration. Golden Dawn is an extreme-right organisation whose emblem [2] deliberately resembles a swastika; whose leader publicly gave the Nazi salute [3] upon his election to Parliament; whose magazine [4] regularly features articles and pictures of the Führer himself; whose spokesman recently assaulted [5] two female rivals on a live TV show; whose manifesto pledges to drive all immigrants [6] out of hospitals and all non-Greek children out of kindergartens; and whose MPs actively participate in racist pogroms [7] against Greece’s immigrant population. -

Negotiating Im/Politeness Via Humor in the Greek Parliament Marianthi Georgalidou University of the Aegean [email protected]
Georgalidou, Marian. Negotiating Im/politeness via Humor in the Greek Parlament Estudios de Lingüística del Español 43 (2021), pp. 99-121 Negotiating Im/politeness via Humor in the Greek Parliament Marianthi Georgalidou University of the Aegean [email protected] Resumen El objetivo de este estudio es examinar la manera en la que el humor sirve como medio de negociación des/cortés en el discurso de los parlamentarios griegos. (Harris 2001; Morreall 2005; Bippus 2007; Tsakona and Popa 2011; Georgalidou 2011). -

FUNDING HATE How White Supremacists Raise Their Money
How White Supremacists FUNDING HATE Raise Their Money 1 RESPONDING TO HATE FUNDING HATE INTRODUCTION 1 SELF-FUNDING 2 ORGANIZATIONAL FUNDING 3 CRIMINAL ACTIVITY 9 THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: CROWDFUNDING 10 BITCOIN AND CRYPTOCURRENCIES 11 THE FUTURE OF WHITE SUPREMACIST FUNDING 14 2 RESPONDING TO HATE How White Supremacists FUNDING HATE Raise Their Money It’s one of the most frequent questions the Anti-Defamation League gets asked: WHERE DO WHITE SUPREMACISTS GET THEIR MONEY? Implicit in this question is the assumption that white supremacists raise a substantial amount of money, an assumption fueled by rumors and speculation about white supremacist groups being funded by sources such as the Russian government, conservative foundations, or secretive wealthy backers. The reality is less sensational but still important. As American political and social movements go, the white supremacist movement is particularly poorly funded. Small in numbers and containing many adherents of little means, the white supremacist movement has a weak base for raising money compared to many other causes. Moreover, ostracized because of its extreme and hateful ideology, not to mention its connections to violence, the white supremacist movement does not have easy access to many common methods of raising and transmitting money. This lack of access to funds and funds transfers limits what white supremacists can do and achieve. However, the means by which the white supremacist movement does raise money are important to understand. Moreover, recent developments, particularly in crowdfunding, may have provided the white supremacist movement with more fundraising opportunities than it has seen in some time. This raises the disturbing possibility that some white supremacists may become better funded in the future than they have been in the past. -
Deafening Hate the Revival of Resistance Records
DEAFENING HATE THE REVIVAL OF RESISTANCE RECORDS "HATECORE" MUSIC LABEL: COMMERCIALIZING HATE The music is loud, fast and grating. The lyrics preach hatred, violence and white supremacy. This is "hatecore" – the music of the hate movement – newly revived thanks to the acquisition of the largest hate music record label by one of the nation’s most notorious hatemongers. Resistance Records is providing a lucrative new source of revenue for the neo-Nazi National Alliance, which ADL considers the single most dangerous organized hate group in the United States today. William Pierce, the group's leader, is the author of The Turner Diaries, a handbook for hate that was read by convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh prior to his April, 1995 bombing attack. The National Alliance stands to reap thousands of dollars from the sale of white supremacist and neo-Nazi music. Resistance Records, which has had a troubled history, has been revitalized since its purchase last year by William Pierce, leader of the National Alliance. Savvy marketing and the fall 1999 purchase of a Swedish competitor have helped Pierce transform the once-floundering label into the nation’s premiere purveyor of "white power" music. Bolstering sales for Resistance Records is an Internet site devoted to the promotion of hatecore music and dissemination of hate literature. Building a Lucrative Business Selling Hate Since taking the helm of Resistance Records after wresting control of the company from a former business partner, Pierce has built the label into a lucrative business that boasts a catalogue of some 250 hatecore music titles. His purchase of Nordland Records of Sweden effectively doubled the label’s inventory to 80,000 compact discs.
