5 About PowerPC The PowerPC is a family of high performance processors developed by Apple, IBM and Motorola. The PowerPC follows a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture that provides significantly greater performance than the Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC) architectures found in the original Apple and IBM compatibles.

Applications must be written with the PowerPC in mind to fully utilize its per- formance capability. Such software is referred to as being “native,” because it is written in the PowerPC’s native language. When running older, non-native software on a PowerPC-equipped machine, it must run in a slower “emula- tion” mode. This will result in performance comparable to a 68040 Macintosh.

About the PowerCard 601 The Power C a r d 601 was designed in a partn e r ship between DayStar Digital and Apple Computer. The Power C a r d 601 includes ROMs (Read Only Memory) licensed from Apple for maximum compatibility. The Power C a r d 601 also comes standard with a 256K Level 2 cache that allows the card to operate at the ma x i m um possible perform a n c e . The Power C a r d 601 su p p o r ts mul t i p l e Macintosh models, including the Quadra 605, 630 series, LC 470 series, 570 se r ies, 580 series, 630 series, Per fo r ma 470 series, 570 series and 630 serie s .

The Power C a r d 601 provides a simple plug and play installation. Pop in the card and run the system installer to update your softwar e automatically. It’s that easy!

The 100 MHz Power C a r d 601 runs at 100 MHz in all of the supported machi n e s . The 50/66 MHz Power C a r d 601 runs at a speed that is equal to two times the clo c k speed of the Mac into which it is installed:

Be sure to test these items for compatibility by fol l o wing the instructions in the next section.

Testing for compatibility If your Macintosh does not start up prop e r l y or behaves errat i c a l l y, you may ha ve a startup prog ram (also known as a system extension or control panel) th a t ’ s incompatible with your system software .

This section tells you how to rem o ve startup prog rams that are incompatible with System 7.5 or 7.5.1.

Remove incompatible startup prog r a m s

To ver ify that you have a compatibility prob lem and test individual prog ram s , fol l o w the steps below.

Verify the prob l e m

1. St a r t up your computer, holding down the space bar.

Holding down the space bar opens the Extensions Manager control panel du r ing startu p .

52 2. Release the space bar when the Extensions Manager control panel opens.

3. Open the Sets menu and choose “System 7.5 or 7.5.1 only.”

This turns off all extensions and control panels except those installed with System 7.5 or 7.5.1.

4. Close the Extensions Manager to continue startu p .

5. When the computer is rea d y, try the same actions that caused the probl e m .

If the prob lem no longer occurs, you prob a bly have an extension or control panel that doesn’t wor k with System 7.5. Continue with the next section.

Test individual extensions and control panels

1. St a r t up your computer, holding down the space bar.

Holding down the space bar opens the Extensions Manager control panel du r ing startu p .

4. Close the Memory control panel window by cli c king the close box in the upper-left corne r .

5. Choose Restart from the Special menu.

58 Installing new application prog r a m s Once you have fol l o wed the steps earlier in this cha p t e r , the full capabilities of the new PowerPC processor are in effec t .

Your upgraded Macintosh is compatible with most softwar e intended for use with Macintosh computers. Certain application prog rams (sometimes called “n a t i v e applications”) are designed especially for computers with the new PowerPC microp ro c e s s o r . These prog rams take best advan t a ge of your comput- er ’ s speed.

If you purchased a prog ram designed for use with the PowerPC microp ro c e s s o r , or if you rec e i v ed any prog rams with the Power C a r d 601, you can install them no w by fol l o wing the instructions that came with them. Be sure that you are running with the Power C a r d 601 turned on during the installation to insure that the PowerPC ver sion of the prog ram is installed.

If you have prob lems installing a prog ram, see the manual that came with the pro g ram or call the softwar e publisher for assistance.

Using application programs designed for use with the PowerPC Some of the new PowerPC prog rams may req u i r e more memory (RAM) to wor k than other prog rams. If you run out of memory when you use these prog ram s , you can use space on your computer’s hard disk as additional memory. This fea - tu r e is called vi r tual memory.

Tur ning on virtual memory increases the amount of avai l a ble memory, but it ma y slightly reduce your prog rams’ speed. If maximum speed is important, you can install more memory in your computer.

To turn on virtual memory, fol l o w these steps:

1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple ( ) menu and open the Memory co n t r ol panel.

59 2. Tur n on Vir tual Memory.

3. Set the virtual memory size (in the “After res t a r t” box) to the size of the avai l a ble built-in memory plus 1.

4. Close the control panel by cli c king the close box in the upper-left corne r .

5. Choose Restart from the Special menu.

Sh a r ed libraries Pro g rams designed for the new PowerPC chip use special files called sh a re d li b ra ri e s . Any necessary shared librar ies are installed automatically in the System Folder when you install these prog ram s .

If a prog ram req u i r es a shared librar y and there is not enough memory avai l a ble for the shared librar y, you see a message that the prog ram could not be opened because there is not enough system memory avai l a ble for the shared librar y. You can solve this prob lem by turning on virtual memory as described in the pr evious section, “Using application prog rams designed for use with the Power P C . ”

If a req u i r ed shared librar y is missing, you see a message that the prog ram could not be opened because the shared librar y could not be found. If this happens, reinstall the prog ram, fol l o wing the directions that came with it. If the shared li b ra r y is still missing, contact the prog ram ’ s publisher for assistance. 60 Using older Macintosh prog r a m s If you exp e r ience prob lems using an older Macintosh prog ram, the prog ram ma y be incompatible with your upgraded Macintosh. You may be able to use your older prog ram if you turn off the Modern Memory Manager in you r Me m o r y control panel. Fol l o w these steps:

1. Choose Control Panels from the Apple ( ) menu and open the Memory co n t r ol panel.

2. Tur n off the Modern Memory Manager .

3. Close the Memory control panel by cli c king the close box in the upper-left co rn e r .

4. Choose Restart from the Special menu.

When you are finished using the prog ram, open the Memory control panel again and turn the Modern Memory Manager back on (You must res t a r t the computer for the cha n g e to take effec t ) .

For best perfor mance, contact the prog ram ’ s publisher for an upgrade. If an up g rade is not avai l a ble for a prog ram, and if turning off the Modern Me m o r y Manager doesn’t help, try turning off the Power C a r d 601 by using the 601 Processor Upgrade control panel. 61 Trou b l e s h o o t i n g

Not enough memory to use the Installer

When you try to use the Installer, you see a message that the Installer is out of me m o r y. Usually this means that your disk cache or RAM Disk is set too high.

• Quit all open application prog rams. Open the Memory control panel, se t your disk cache to the lowest possible setting and turn on Vir tual Memory.

Not enough memory to install the software

When you try to use the Installer, you see a message that your computer doesn’t ha ve enough memory to install the softwar e. This means that your Macintosh has less RAM (random-access memory) than is req u i r ed to use System 7.5.

• Contact your reseller for infor mation on purchasing additional memory.

65 Not enough disk space

When you try to use the Installer, you see a message that there is not enough disk space avai l a ble to install the softwar e.

• Ma k e more space avai l a ble on your hard disk by rem o ving some files from the disk. Make backup copies of the files, if necessary, and then drag them to the Trash and choose Empty Trash from the Special menu.

• If you are installing from flop p y disks, you can also try starting up you r Macintosh using the Install Me Fir st disk. Using the Installer this way req u i r es less disk space.

Di f ficulty modifying the System file

When you try to use the Installer, you see a message that the System file cannot be modified (or repeated messages asking if it’s okay to modify the System file ) .

• If virus - p r otection softwar e is turned on, turn it off by dragg ing it out of the System Folder and res t a r ting your computer. You can turn it back on after in s t a l l a t i o n .

• Try disabling your extensions by holding down the Shift key while you res t a r t the computer (If you are installing over a networ k, you cannot use this solution).

• Your System Folder may be protected, or the System and Finder files may be locked. To turn off System Folder Protection, use the Per fo r ma control panel or the General Controls panel (depending on your ver sion of system so f t wa r e). To see if your System file or Finder file is locked, select the file ’ s icon, then open the File menu and choose Get Info. To unlock the file , cli c k the Locked che ck b o x to rem o ve the X. Restart your computer and ma k e sure that the System file and Finder file are unlocked .

66 Pr oblems using System 7.5 or the PowerCard 601 This section helps with prob lems you might encounter using the computer after installing System 7.5 or 7.5.1 or the upgrade card.

You can’t start up the computer

When you turn on your computer, you see a “bomb” message.

• You prob a bly have an incompatible item in the System Fol d e r . To turn off po t e n t i a l l y incompatible items in the System Fol d e r , hold down the Space bar while you res t a r t your computer. When the Extensions Manager opens, choose “System 7.5 or 7.5.1 Only” from the Sets pop-up menu. Close the Extensions Manager to resume startup. All extensions are turned off, exc e p t those installed with System 7.5 or 7.5.1. Once you have started up the com- pu t e r , you need to determine which startup prog ram is causing the pro b lem. For instructions, see “Testing for Compatibility” in Chapter 5 of this book.

• Your system softwar e may be damaged. Start up the computer using the Disk Too l s disk that came with the upgrade card. When you have res t a rt e d the computer, fol l o w the instructions in “Per fo r ming a Clean Installation” in Chapter 5 of this book.

You often encounter problems that req u i r e you to res t a r t the co m p u t e r

As you wor k in an application prog ram, you often encounter prob lems that req u i r e you to res t a r t the computer.

• You may have an incompatible item in the System Fol d e r , or your applica- tion prog ram may be incompatible with System 7.5 or 7.5.1.

For compatibility infor mation on application prog rams, contact the publi s h e r . 67 You can’t open a program, it quits unexpectedly, or you see a mes- sage that not enough memory is available to open the prog r a m .

The prog ram needs more memory, or the Macintosh ran out of memory.

• Quit the prog rams that you have open and then open the prog ram you want to use. If that doesn’t wor k, res t a r t your Macintosh.

• Use the prog ram ’ s Info window to giv e the prog ram more memory. (Quit the prog ram if it’s open, select the prog ram ’ s icon, choose Get Info from the File menu, and increase the num b e r s in the “Minimum size” and “P re fe r red size” boxes at the lower rig h t . )

• Tur n on virtual memory in the Memory control panel.

• Install more RAM in your computer.

• If the prog ram is not designed specifica l l y for use with the PowerPC, use the 601 Processor Upgrade control panel to turn off the Power C a r d 601.

You see a message that your application program can’t be opened because a file can’t be found.

Pro g rams designed specifica l l y for the PowerPC microp r ocessor use special file s called sh a r ed librari e s . An y necessary shared librar ies should be automatically installed in the System Folder when you install these prog ram s .

• Fol l o w the directions that came with your prog ram to reinstall the pro- gram. If the shared librar y is still missing, contact the prog ram ’ s ma nu fa c t u r er for assistance.

You can open a program but it doesn’t work prop e r l y , or you see messages rep o r ting system error s .

The Power C a r d 601 has been tested ext e n s i ve l y with existing prog ram s . Ho wever , a few older prog rams may have compatibility prob lems.

• Read the section “Using Older Macintosh Prog rams” in Chapter 6.

• You may need to turn off the card when using the prog ram . Use the 601 Pr ocessor Upgrade control panel to turn off the card, then res t a r t the computer. 68 A program runs more slowly than it did before installing the card.

• Some prog rams are designed to run optimally with your new 601 proc e s s o r . These prog rams are refe r red to as being native or “Ac c e l e r ated for Power Ma c i n t o s h . ” Other none native prog rams may run faster if you turn off the ca r d when you use them. Use the 601 Processor Upgrade control panel to tu r n off the Power C a r d 601.

• If the prog ram is not PowerPC native, contact the prog ram ’ s manufa c t u re r to see whether a PowerPC upgrade is avai l a ble .

• If the prog ram is PowerPC native, make sure that the Power C a r d 601 was tu r ned on during the prog ram ’ s installation. Some prog ram installers detect wh i c h processor is being used and only install a ver sion for that proc e s s o r .

You run out of memory when using programs designed for the PowerPC microp ro c e s s o r .

• Tur n on virtual memory in the Memory control panel to make more mem- or y avai l a ble. For the best perfor mance while using virtual memory, set the vi r tual memory size in the Memory control panel to the size of the avai l - able built-in memory plus 1.

• Install more memory in your computer.

The pointer movement on screen is jerky. • Clean the mouse or trac kball. • Use the Memory control panel to turn off virtual memory. • Install more memory in your computer.

The computer behaves strangely or has problems starting up with the PowerCard 601 card turned on.

It may help to clear out all the computer’s settings (PRAM).

• Hold down the -Option-P-R keys simul t a n e o u s l y while the computer is st a r ting up. (Make sure the Caps Lock key is not pressed.) You will need to tu r n on the Power C a r d 601 using the 601 Processor Upgrade control panel. You may need to use other control panels to adjust your settings for the date, time, monitors, and file sharing, and you may need to reselect your printer in the Chooser. 69 Pe rf o r mance notes He r e are a few tips to get the most from your Power C a r d 601:

• Wh e n e ver possible, keep the Modern Memory Manager enable d .

• Up g rade your non-native applications, control panels and extensions to PowerPC ver sions as they become avai l a ble.

• If the application that you are running is not native (emulated), it may run faster by turning off the Power C a r d 601.

• The Apple licensed ROMs on the Power C a r d 601 include the improved SCSI Ma n a ger 4.3. To get the best hard disk perfor mance, be sure to update the dri v er on each of your disks to ver sions optimized for use with SCSI Ma n a ger 4.3. The included Apple HD SC Setup application will update any disks for matted with the Apple form a t t e r . If you used a third party form a t t e r , contact the publisher for the ver sion that will install 4.3 specific drive r s. A list of the more well known form a t t e r s and the approp r iate ver sion num b e r s fol l ow s :

FW B ’ s Hard Disk Too l k i t 1.6.1 or later, blind tran s fe r s off La C i e ’ s Silver l i n i n g 5.6.1 or later, with default settings Casa Blanca Wor ks Driv e 7 3.5 or later, blind tran s fe r s off TranSoft SCSI Direc t o r 3.11 or later, blind tran s fe r s off

• Var y the size of the Apple Disk Cache, located in the Memory control panel, to find an optimal setting for your system. Some hard driv es and spe- ci fi c applications perfor m better with the cache set to its minimum .

• Keep the number of control panel and system extension files that you have in the System Folder to a minimum. If you find that you are not using the fea - tu r es of such a file, turn it off with the Extension Manager . Not only can these files cause conflicts with one another, they can also rob the system’s pe r fo r mance, especially if they are not written in the native PowerPC form a t .
