STATE PATROL The State Patrol is truly representative of the old adage “necessity is the mother of invention”. The annual horse show was spread across the massive Santa Rosa Fairgrounds with activities going on throughout the day and often late into the night from Founder’s Grove to the racetrack and every arena in between. Hundreds of horses were stabled on the grounds with their human entourages camped across the street from the main grounds during the run of the show or coming/going each day. With the addition of people and horses who came in for only the day, the annual show in Santa Rosa truly looked like “Grand Central Station at rush hour”. Per Nielsen (President 1987) and George Gillette put together a team of volunteers in the 1980s to help provide security during the show to patrol the grounds, man gates, direct traffic and provide whatever assistance show management and the competitors needed. From this group came the idea and the nucleus for a new program; i.e. “CSHA Security Team”. Jim Real (President 1992-1994, 2005, 2007) and George Gillette met with local law enforcement agencies and gained their approval for CSHA to utilize its own members as a more formal security team for the show with the provision that there were mandatory training guidelines and background/reference checks performed. Very quickly it was seen that there was a need beyond the annual show and the program was formalized within CSHA around 1985.

    CSHA THROUGH THE YEARS The California State Horsemen’s Association was foaled in October of 1941. The Santa Clara County Horsemen’s Association hosted a meeting in San Jose for representatives of riding clubs and associations from throughout California for the purpose of forming a state-wide federation of horsemen for legislative strength in order to preserve equestrian riding and hiking trails and camping facilities within publicly controlled forests and parks. However, with the declaration of war a few weeks later, the concept of a state-wide organization was put out to pasture for a while. Despite the fact that the first convention was held at the De Anza Hotel in San Jose in 1942 and CSHA was incorporated on March 3, 1942, the organization nearly became a casualty of World II. With most people focused on civil defense work, military service and managing day-to-day living during war time, there was not too much done about plans for the new organization. However, the Board and the first member clubs were able to keep CSHA alive during the war years. President and Chairman of the Board: Ed Fellows of Morgan Hill Board Members: William Strauss of San Francisco, Robert Mitchell of Santa Rosa, Flood Morse of Escalon, Paul Abert of Lafayette and Dr. Walter Cress of Sacramento The first member clubs, known as the “Eight Ss”, were: January 2, 1942 Santa Clara County Horsemen’s Association January 16, 1942 Sonoma County Riding and Driving Club February 19, 1942 Sonoma Cavaliers February 19, 1942 Sonoma County Trail Blazers February 19, 1942 Santa Cruz County Horsemen’s Association March 28, 1942 Sacramento County Horsemen’s Association June 30, 1942 Sacramento County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse July 5, 1942 San Francisco Horsemen’s Association Since that first Board, the ranks of CSHA’s membership have been swelled by people from every walk of life, every equestrian discipline and every geographic area.

    JAMES S. (JIMMY) GREENWELL PALANI RANCH, HAWAII MEAT COMPANY b. 1945 Jimmy has always loved working with livestock, horses and the land. He was born and raised on Oʻahu where his father (James M. Greenwell) managed Hawaii Meat Company. He spent lots of time while growing up in at the HMCo’s operations in ʻEwa and Kahuku; and later, at the first HMCo feed yard at West Loch. He also spent summers in Kona on Palani Ranch, and two summers on Molokai Ranch under Henry Rice, and another at HMCo’s second feed yard at Barbers Point. He attended Cornell University majoring in agricultural economics graduating with a B.S. degree in 1967. He was able to keep riding in college because he got hooked on polo. Jimmy captained the team as a senior and started for Cornell his last three years. Following several years in the service via ROTC, he started work in 1970 in the real estate/land business with Alexander & Baldwin. This led to his becoming a licensed real estate broker and peaked his interest in land matters. Except for vacations in Kona and polo through the renewal of the Maui Polo Club, he was away from livestock and agriculture for about ten years. In 1980, he left A&B to go to work for his family’s enterprise with Palani Ranch Company and he was back in the cattle industry that he loved. He recalls one of his first Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council meetings in Waimea. He expressed his concern that there was no committee or agenda item focusing specifically on what he saw as the cattle industry’s most basic and often threatened resource – the land.
