May 9, 2021 – SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER FROM THE DEACON’S DESK Acts of the Apostles 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 1 John 4: 7-10 John 15: 9-17 What’s your favorite love song? Maybe it’s “Something” by the Beatles, or “Your Song” by Elton John, or “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley, or maybe “I Got You” by Sonny & Cher. Each of us has one or maybe a couple love songs that stir deep emotions and fond memories of what we feel or believe love is about. But the greatest love song is by the artist Jesus the Nazorean, and it’s entitled “Love One Another As I Love You”. In this song Jesus describes how true love fills one’s heart from unbelievable joy. Love says this composer is about laying down one’s life for another. A surrendering of one’s self is the way to find true love. Today’s Scripture readings help us better understand and feel this love song in our hearts. Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles doesn’t specifically mention the word love, but it is implied. This reading is a second Pentecost or more specifically the gentile Pentecost. In Acts Chapter 2: 1-11 we hear about the well-known coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles gathered in the house and what we call the birthday of the Church. While the first coming of the Spirit is more well known, this second Pentecost in today’s reading is equally as important. In today’s reading the love of God through the Holy Spirit is poured forth on all Gentiles. God’s love is revealed to all mankind through Peter’s acceptance of Cornelius and his family desire for holiness. As Peter says, “God shows no partiality”. God’s love is universal and given to all. In speaking about love, our second reading from first John says it brilliantly, “God is love”. And those who say they love must practice what they preach. Finally we have Jesus’ greatest commandment...to love as he has loved us. It sounds so simple, and yet Jesus knows how difficult and demanding it is. And Jesus promises us that if we follow his example of self-surrendering love our lives will be filled with great purpose, hope, and joy. You might remember the old song “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love” or “We Are One in the Spirit”. It is based on the idea that non-believers recognized in the early Christian believers the simple fact that they loved one another. Love for each was the sign of the spreading of early Christianity. More than every, we Christians need to show our love for another. Love is the answer to all the problems of the world and of our individual lives. But we all have failed to love as Jesus commanded and witnessed by his life. All of us are so absorbed with our own wants and needs that we fail to give to those in most need. We seem to be so divided on how we approach problems and the critical issues. It’s always my way and my needs instead of looking after others and seeing their needs. We need to pray for another Pentecost in our lives that the Spirit would pour forth upon us again and teach us how to love. There are no quick fixes to loving more...except to placing God first and foremost in our lives. If we remain in his love and follow his commandments, then he will teach us how to love. “Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God.” Deacon Steve Please check out our Website PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS at http://stn-church.com/.
