Walking in His Steps Introduction
Caption Walking In His Steps A 40-Day Journey By Joe Pettigrew, Ph.D. Walking In His Steps We are living in a lonely and challenging time. Christians are trying to figure out their new normal regarding Bible studies, attending Church activities, and how they can continue to grow their faith. Some churches have continued with in-person Bible studies, while most focus on internet studies and meeting through Zoom. There is a great need today for Bible relevant studies that can be used in person or via the internet to bring people together. There has never been a time where Christians needed to communicate with one another more. Today’s complex issues are calling Christians back to the basics of their faith. A practical study emphasizing current problems and issues and how they relate to their faith are being sought. While there are many outstanding studies on the Disciples' life or highlighting individual Biblical characters, the current demand is for studies that will help Christians with the current issues they are experiencing. They want to live a life that will lead people to Christ; however, they are looking for what the Word says about today's issues. Walking In His Steps is more than a book; it guides a 40-day journey to living a life sold out to Jesus Christ. This study will enable readers to understand and discuss what Jesus expects from us as we deal with many of life’s most important questions. By the end of Walking In His Steps, readers will desire to continue to study God’s Word and invite their friends to share in this relevant study. -

May 9, 2021 – SIXTH SUNDAY of EASTER
May 9, 2021 – SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER FROM THE DEACON’S DESK Acts of the Apostles 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 1 John 4: 7-10 John 15: 9-17 What’s your favorite love song? Maybe it’s “Something” by the Beatles, or “Your Song” by Elton John, or “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley, or maybe “I Got You” by Sonny & Cher. Each of us has one or maybe a couple love songs that stir deep emotions and fond memories of what we feel or believe love is about. But the greatest love song is by the artist Jesus the Nazorean, and it’s entitled “Love One Another As I Love You”. In this song Jesus describes how true love fills one’s heart from unbelievable joy. Love says this composer is about laying down one’s life for another. A surrendering of one’s self is the way to find true love. Today’s Scripture readings help us better understand and feel this love song in our hearts. Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles doesn’t specifically mention the word love, but it is implied. This reading is a second Pentecost or more specifically the gentile Pentecost. In Acts Chapter 2: 1-11 we hear about the well-known coming of the Holy Spirit to the apostles gathered in the house and what we call the birthday of the Church. While the first coming of the Spirit is more well known, this second Pentecost in today’s reading is equally as important. -
The NC Synod Reads Together: Lutherans Learning Luke
The NC Synod Reads Together: Lutherans Learning Luke June 12-July 9, 2016 a summer reading adventure brought to you by the NC Synod Book of Faith Team !2 Greetings NC Synod! Pack your bags. We’re hitting the road this summer with Luke! Not lightsaber Luke, not football Luke, not even country singer Luke, we’re setting out with the gospel according to Luke. We’ll read a chapter and devotion together each day, ponder a question or two, and pray along with our fellow Lutherans around the state. Your NC Synod Book of Faith Team hopes this experience will allow you to encounter Jesus wherever you roam this summer, expand your familiarity with the gospel according to Luke, and discover God’s grace along the way. Many thanks to all of our contributors and readers! Without you, this summer reading opportunity would not exist. May God bless us in our journey together; may the Holy One open us to consider what it means to be church here in North Carolina and the mission we share in Christ! Read in peace! LOVING ONE ANOTHER #206 Contents CHRIST ’S NEW COMMANDMENT Charles H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one an- other. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”—John 13:34-35 ANY of you, I do not doubt, have heard the story of Arch-bishop Usher 1 and Mr. Rutherford;2 but it is so appropriate to this subject that I cannot help telling it again. The archbishop had heard of the wondrous M power of Rutherford’s devotion and of the singular beauty of the arrangement of his household, and he wished to witness it himself; but he could not tell how to do so until it occurred to him that he might disguise him- self as a poor traveler. Accordingly, at nightfall, he knocked at the door of Mr. Rutherford’s house and was received by Mrs. Rutherford. He asked if he could find lodgings there for the night. She answered, “Yes,” for they enter- tained strangers. -

“Love One Another” 1 John 4:7-12 August 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION
“Love One Another” 1 John 4:7-12 August 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION: For the third time in this short letter, John brings up the topic of love for one another. It would be hard to overemphasize the importance of this to John and to the entire New Testament. It was Jesus, after all, who first gave such emphasis to this area of love for one another. And he spoke most forcefully about it on the eve of his crucifixion. He also spoke about it during the fifty days between his resurrection and ascension. Everything Jesus said should be taken to heart, but I don’t think we are wrong to emphasize those things he spoke about during his last days on earth. John seems to understand that and responds by giving emphasis to this area of love for one another. John makes a statement here that is sure to raise some eyebrows. He says, “Whoever loves has been born of God” (v. 7). Think about that. He doesn’t say what we would expect him to say, that those who are born of God are able to love. He says that only those born of God are able to love. If you see someone who loves, John says you can count on the fact that they are born again. How could it be that only those born of God are able to love? Many who don’t claim to follow Christ enter into marriage and seem to have a genuine love for one another. How many songs, movies and books have been written about this topic? If you think about it, most of them assume that we all know what love is, and never bother to define it. -

THE AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH 191 BASIC LESSONS ON PRACTICAL CHRISTIAN LIVING Burdened with the need of a firm foundation for the Christian life, brother Watchman Nee gave a series of basic lessons on practical Christian living during the training session for workers held in Kuling, Foochow, China in 1948. He expressed the hope that these essential lessons might be faithfully learned by God’s people, thereby laying a good foundation for the building up of the Body of Christ. These messages on practical Christian living have now been translated from the Chinese language and will be published in a series of six books, bearing the various titles of: (1) A Living Sacrifice; (2) The Good Confession; (3) Assembling Together; (4) Not I, But Christ; (5) Do All to the Glory of God; and (6) Love One Another. “Exercise thyself unto godliness” (1 Tim. 4:7), is the exhortation of the apostle Paul. May our hearts be so exercised by God’s Word as to give the Holy Spirit opportunity to perfect the new creation.
