Great Wine A Family Tradition Family Winemakers Tasting San Diego Del Mar Fairgrounds Wyland Center MARCH 20, 2016 Welcome to the Family Winemakers of California’s Tasting at Del Mar! This tasting marks the return of Family Winemakers to the San Diego area and we’re pleased to be back. Our signature trade and consumer tasting was last held at Del Mar in 2103. We’ve been doing tastings for 26 years and it’s a “family tradition.” The recession changed the way wine is marketed, but the simple fact is that people have to taste the wine to appreciate it and then buy it. This tasting is a unique chance to discover wines from a diverse group of close to 90 California wineries that are really focused on the Southern California market. Twenty wineries will be pouring for the first time at our event. FWC is the political and policy voice for small family-owned wineries. We lobbied drink taxes, water issues, fees, warning labels, social media, labor issues and farming regulations this past year at the State Capitol and regulatory agencies. Continuing Pierce’s Disease and Red Blotch research remain a top of our members. We also started our 2nd year in boosting wine education and sales in China. Consumers enjoy greater choice in California wines across the U.S. because of our advocacy; just ask consumers in South Dakota, the newest open state. Artistry and passion are the hallmark of FWC wineries at these events and I’m sure you’ll taste it in your glass. Wonderful sponsors and vendors make this event a reality with their financial support and participation.

  • Carol's Bunch NOVEMBER 2014
Carol's Bunch NOVEMBER 2014 to our faithful ‘Bunch! We are so pleased to be finished with our crazy Happy Holidays... Crush season EARLY this year, so we can focus all the more on what we do best —making super delicious wines and getting them out the door to you! This year’s harvest was the earliest and most “compressed” one that Carol has ever seen in her 38 years of winemaking. It started with early budbreak back in March, probably a bit due to the extremely dry winter you have all heard about. Then bloom and crop-set all happened with very few hitches, and we had a nice long growing season with a very warm but not horribly HOT summer, a tiny shower in mid-September (when we already had half the grapes Lingenfelder Zin ready to harvest in!) followed by a beautiful Indian Summer which dried out the remaining vineyards and pushed everything thru to a nice ripe finish. Very tasty fruit, indeed, and a moderate crop size made for rich, concentrated flavors, just the way we like to taste ‘em! GET YOUR RED HOT NEWS! We have some extremely exciting NEWS to report!! We are now the owners of a beautiful Dry Creek vineyard, 22 acres with 16 planted to…not Zinfandel, but Chardonnay! We saw that as a rather major faux pas—the primary obligation of a grape in Dry Creek Valley is to be Zin, right? Or at least red?? However, visionary partner Mitch saw an opportunity to satisfy the need for a white partner wine to our wildly popular Wild Thing Zin.

  • Carol Shelton Wines Newjersey Presentation May2018
The Story of Zinfandel in California, as told through the wines of Carol Shelton. Carol’s Story Begins… With a simple guessing game. Carol’s road to becoming a winemaker had a very early and unusual start. When she was six, her mom developed an “identify the scent” game using herbs and spices out of their kitchen cabinet. It quickly became apparent that Carol not only possessed a great sense of smell, but she was remarkably adept at figuring out the new smells as the game evolved. As Carol recalls, “it was probably the beginning of my path into the wine industry”. A Pioneer in the Wine Industry Carol was one of the first dozen women to graduate from UC Davis in 1978. In 2005 Carol was honored by The Women’s History Project as one of eight Pioneer Women Winemakers of Sonoma County along with Zelma Long, Merry Edwards, and Helen Turley. Great Vineyards produce Great Wines Carol started Carol Shelton Wines in 2000 with her husband, Mitch Mackenzie. They have sought out exceptional vineyards throughout California including Mendocino, Rockpile, Dry Creek Valley, Russian River Valley, Lodi, the Sierra Foothills and the Cucamonga Valley of Southern California. • When It Rains… It Pours
February 2017 When it Rains… It Pours. Winter Goodies for you! Welcome to Winter 2017, the chaotic season of America’s discontent…but no matter what your political leanings are, the wines in this shipment are sure to bring you at least 6 bottles’ worth of comfort. Your February club shipment has some really special goodies! As for new releases, the new vintage of 2016 Wild Thing Rendezvous Rosé gives you a teasing taste of Spring with its crisply dry, cranberry-watermelon delight. Also in this shipment is the newest release of 2014 Peaceland Zinfandel. The 2014 is the sophomore vintage for us from the incredible PeaceLand Vineyard in the Fountaingrove District. The 2013 was outstanding, and the new vintage stays true to form. We skipped your usual bottle of Wild Thing Zin for the 2014 Monga Zin, because we wanted you to get at least one bottle before it sells out! There won’t be a 2015 vintage due to extremely low yields in the vineyard, but there will be a 2016…you just have to wait for it! Next is the 2014 Karma Reserve; the latest incarnation of Karma gets the spotlight in this newsletter, as we are featuring this new Zin-based blend on Pages 2-3. The 2013 King Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon is your last chance at this mountain-grown wonder, redolent of black cherry and chocolate, with what we call “great bones”—good tannin Carol tasting the 2016 Rosé in January days structure supporting a lushly round body—oops, let’s try not to get too sexy here! Last prior to bottling.
