JOHN: Next Sunday – Sanctity of Life Sunday 8:00 AM – Matins (Morning Prayers) Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Glory to Jesus Christ! 1/18 Saturday 6:00 PM – Vigil Next Sunday, the third Sunday in January, as usual, is the Annual Sanctity of Life Sunday in the Orthodox Church in America. On that Sunday we remember 1/19 Sunday – 31st Sunday after Pentecost and commemorate what we know to be true every day of our lives—that life is 9:15 AM – Divine Liturgy to be valued, honored, protected, and, most importantly, devoted to God. (Fr. John will be departing immediately following the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy in order to Life is to be protected in every child, even unborn children still dwelling in their travel to the Waterbury Parish, for a General mother’s womb. Life is to be protected whenever and wherever it is found, not Meeting of that parish body.) only in the very young, but also in the very old, or the very sick. Life is to be 1/22 Wednesday loved and cherished and nurtured within our families, among our friends, and, 8:00 AM – Matins (Morning Prayers) yes, even among our enemies. 1/25 Saturday On at least three occasions that I vividly remember over my almost two decades 6:00 PM – Vigil as priest and pastor here in our parish, I was contacted by a member of our parish Followed by Choir Rehearsal asking a specific blessing to stop invasive and oppressive medical treatments, even when doing so would almost certainly result in biological death, sooner nd 1/26 Sunday – 32 Sunday after Pentecost rather than later. 9:15 AM – Divine Liturgy In each case—knowing that this desire was being stated in humble expectation 1/29 Wednesday and faithful, trusting hope of eternal life with our loving God, the divine 8:00 AM – Matins (Morning Prayers) Healer—I gave my pastoral blessing. I gave my blessing knowing that if God 2/1 Saturday chose to preserve biological life, He would do so, but also knowing that Eve of the Feast of the biological life is not an end, in and of itself. After all, day after day we honor in Meeting of the Lord in the Temple the Church the memory of holy martyrs, those who gave up their biological lives 6:00 PM – Vigil in order to continue to live eternal, sanctified, Godly lives—lives lived in God Followed by Choir Rehearsal the Son, by God the Spirit, to God the Father. 2/2 Sunday – 33rd Sunday after Pentecost This is vitally important: Life which is sacred and sanctified, is life which is Feast of the Meeting of the Lord lived in and with and for God! When we defend the sanctity of life, it is Godly in the Temple life that we are protecting, not mere biological existence. So many of the holy 9:15 AM – Divine Liturgy martyrs could have, quite easily, protected and preserved their biological lives Followed by a Special, Very Brief, One-Issue, by a simple and direct denial of their Christian Faith. They did not do that. General Meeting of the Terryville Parish Rather, they proclaimed faith and hope and love in Christ, and then paid the 2/3 Monday price of that confession and witness with their earthly, biological lives. 7:00 PM – February Monthly Meeting This is sanctified life! Life lived in Christ Jesus, by the Holy Spirit, to God the of the Terryville Parish Council Father! Holy martyrs, models of sanctified lives, pray to God for us! 2/5 Wednesday In Christ, Fr. Here is a link to information about this declaration, as posted on the official website of the Orthodox Church in America: https://www.oca.org/news/headline-news/the-holy-synod-proclaims-2020-as-a-year-of- anniversaries-for-the-orthodox-church-in-america. In 1970, fifty years ago, two significant events occurred, and these are the events that are being remembered. First, the Orthodox Church in America was given its self-governing status, which is termed autocephaly. Autocephaly, which means “self-headed,” means that the Orthodox Church in America is an independent Orthodox Church, which elects and lives under the governance of its own presiding archbishop. Our presiding archbishop is, presently, His Beatitude, the Most Blessed TIKHON, Archbishop of Washington, Metropolitan of All America and Canada. Autocephaly was granted to the Orthodox Church in America by the Russian Orthodox Church in spring 1970. Second, later that same year, 1970, one of the first acts of the Orthodox Church in America, was to canonize (officially declare) the first formally recognized North American Orthodox saint, Saint Herman of Alaska.
