THIS BULLETIN IS YOURS TO TAKE HOME Divine Liturgy Variables on Sunday, January 12, 2020 Tone 5 / Eothinon 8 Sunday after the Theophany of Christ Martyr Tatiana of Rome and those with her; Martyr Peter Absalom of Palestine; Virgin-martyr Euthasia; Martyr Mertios of Mauretania ORTHOFLASH - ST.GEORGE MONTRÉAL YOUTH MINISTRY THE HOLY SPIRIT "...and in the HOLY SPIRIT, Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,..." (The Creed). THE HOLY SPIRIT is God, the third Person of the Holy Trinity, who, from eternity, "proceeds" from God the Father (Jn 15:26). The HOLY SPIRIT bears the title of Lord with God the Father and Christ the Son. He is the Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ. He is eternal, uncreated, divine, and co-equal with the Father and the Son; and so, in every action of God toward the world, the HOLY SPIRIT is necessarily acting. Thus, in Genesis, it is written: "And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." (Gen 1:2). It is the same Spirit who is the "the breath of life" for all living things and particularly for man. This belief of our Orthodox Church that the HOLY SPIRIT is God is based on the Holy Scriptures and on Holy Tradition. The HOLY SPIRIT spoke through the prophets and was the Divine Instrument in the birth of Christ. The HOLY SPIRIT is the Author of the Bible; He guides and protects the Church of Christ, having given it life on the day of Pentecost. It is the HOLY SPIRIT Who endows the members of the Church with varieties of spiritual gifts for their illumination and satisfaction. The Spirit dwells inside every true Christian, each one's body being his temple (1 Cor. 3:16). He is depicted as a "Counsellor" or "Helper" guiding the people in the way of the truth. The 'Fruit of the Spirit' (i.e. the result of his work) - a biblical term that sums up the nine visible attributes of a true Christian life is: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Gal 5:22). These are the fruits that all Christians should be producing in their new lives with our Lord Jesus Christ. JOSEPH PURPURA AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PARISH COUNCIL, ALAN ROSSY Warm wishes for a healthy and prosperous New Year from your Clergy and Parish Council Board Members. Parish Council Board Members can be identified by a bronze lapel name plate and are always present during the Divine Liturgy. Please speak to them for any help or concerns. We are here to serve our beloved St. George and our parishioners. As we enter 2020, we continue to make significant improvements within our community. We need your participation and your involvement in our many Church organizations (See Page 2). Father Justin Mitchell and Father Joseph Purpura lead our Youth Mentoring Program which is open to all ages whether it be by being a mentor or mentee. Help us build a strong program for our youth through your experience and guidance in any profession. A simple conversation about your life lessons would be quite engaging for our youth. Bring your children to church and have them partake in Sunday School, communion and prayer. Following Liturgy, we invite you to Coffee Hour hosted by “Le Circle”. Enjoy the best cup of coffee and croissants this side of town. There, you can meet and converse with your fellow parishioners before heading home. We pray that one of your New Year’s resolutions is to give more time to your Church than last year. This is your community, this is your St. George Church. Please help in keeping it strong. May God bless you and your family. ﺭﺳﺎﻟﺔ ﺍﻷﺏ ﺍﻟﺭﺍﻋﻲ ﺟﻭﺯﻳﻑ ﭘﻭﺭﭘﻭﺭﺍ ﻭﺁﻻﻥ ﺭﻭﺳﻲ (ﺭﺋﻳﺱ ﻣﺟﻠﺱ ﺇﺩﺍﺭﺓ ﻛﻧﻳﺳﺔ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﻳﺱ ﺟﺎﻭﺭﺟﻳﻭﺱ) ﺃﺭﺳﻝ ﻟﻛﻡ ﺃﺭﻕ ﺃﻣﻧﻳﺎﺗﻲ ﺑﺣﻠﻭﻝ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻡ ﺍﻟﺟﺩﻳﺩ ﻣﻥ ﺍﻵﺑﺎء ﻭﺍﻟﺧﺩﺍﻡ ﻭﺃﻋﺿﺎء ﺍﻟﻣﺟﻠﺱ ﺍﻟﻁﺎﺋﻔﻲ. ﻳﻣﻛﻧﻛﻡ ﺍﻟﺗﻌﺭﻑ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺃﻋﺿﺎء ﻣﺟﻠﺱ ﺍﻟﺭﻋﻳﺔ ﻣﻥ ﺧﻼﻝ ﺍﻟﻠﻭﺣﺔ ﺍﻟﺑﺭﻭﻧﺯﻳﺔ ﺍﻟﻣﻭﺿﻭﻋﺔ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺳﺗﺭﺗﻬﻡ ﺧﻼﻝ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﺍﺱ ﺍﻹﻟﻬﻲ. ﻳﺭﺟﻰ ﺍﻟﺗﺣﺩﺙ ﺇﻟﻳﻬﻡ ﻟﻠﺣﺻﻭﻝ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﻣﺳﺎﻋﺩﺓ ﺃﻭ ﻓﻲ ﺣﺎﻟﺔ ﻭﺟﻭﺩ ﺃﻱ ﺃﺳﺋﻠﺔ. ﻧﺣﻥ ﺳﻌﺩﺍء ﺑﻭﺟﻭﺩﻧﺎ ﻫﻧﺎ ﻟﺧﺩﻣﺔ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﻳﺱ ﺟﺎﻭﺭﺟﻳﻭﺱ ﺍﻟﻣﺣﺑﻭﺏ ﻭﺃﺑﻧﺎء ﺍﻟﺭﻋﻳﺔ. ﻣﻊ ﺩﺧﻭﻟﻧﺎ ﻋﺎﻡ ٢٠٢٠ ﻧﻭﺍﺻﻝ ﺇﺟﺭﺍء ﺗﺣﺳﻳﻧﺎﺕ ﻛﺑﻳﺭﺓ ﻓﻲ ﺭﻋﻳﺗﻧﺎ. ﻧﺣﺗﺎﺝ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻣﺳﺎﻋﺩﺗﻙ ﻭﻣﺷﺎﺭﻛﺗﻙ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻌﺩﻳﺩ ﻣﻥ ﺍﻟﻣﻧﻅﻭﻣﺎﺕ ﺍﻟﻛﻧﺳﻳﺔ ﻟﺩﻳﻧﺎ (ﺍﻧﻅﺭ ﺻﻔﺣﺔ ٢). ﻳﻘﻭﺩ ﺍﻷﺏ ﺟﻭﺳﺗﻳﻥ ﻣﻳﺗﺷﻝ ﻭﺍﻷﺏ ﺟﻭﺯﻳﻑ ﺑﻭﺭﺑﻭﺭﺍ ﺑﺭﻧﺎﻣﺟﻧﺎ ﺍﻹﺭﺷﺎﺩﻱ ﻟﻠﺷﺑﺎﺏ ﻭﻫﻭ ﻣﺗﺎﺡ ﻟﺟﻣﻳﻊ ﺍﻷﻋﻣﺎﺭ ﺳﻭﺍء ﻛﺎﻥ ﺫﻟﻙ ﻣﻥ ﺧﻼﻝ ﻛﻭﻧﻪ ﻣﻌﻠﻣﺎً ﺃﻭ ﺗﻠﻣﻳﺫﺍً. ﺳﺎﻋﺩﻧﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺑﻧﺎء ﺑﺭﻧﺎﻣﺞ ﻗﻭﻱ ﻟﺷﺑﺎﺑﻧﺎ ﻣﻥ ﺧﻼﻝ ﺧﺑﺭﺗﻙ ﻭﺗﻭﺟﻳﻬﻙ ﻓﻲ ﺃﻱ ﻣﻬﻧﺔ. ﻣﺣﺎﺩﺛﺔ ﺑﺳﻳﻁﺔ ﺣﻭﻝ ﺧﺑﺭﺗﻙ ﻓﻲ ﻫﺫﺍ ﺍﻟﻣﺟﺎﻝ ﺳﺗﻛﻭﻥ ﺟﺫﺍﺑﺔ ﻭﻣﻔﻳﺩﺓ ﻟﺷﺑﺎﺑﻧﺎ. ﺃﺣﺿﺭ ﺃﻁﻔﺎﻟﻙ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﻛﻧﻳﺳﺔ ﻭﺍﻁﻠﺏ ﻣﻧﻬﻡ ﺍﻟﻣﺷﺎﺭﻛﺔ ﻓﻲ ﻣﺩﺍﺭﺱ ﺍﻷﺣﺩ ﻭﺍﻟﺗﻭﺍﺻﻝ ﻭﺍﻟﺻﻼﺓ. ﺑﻌﺩ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﺍﺱ ﺍﻹﻟﻬﻲ ﻧﺩﻋﻭﻙ ﻟﻠﺣﺿﻭﺭ ﻭﺗﻧﺎﻭﻝ ﺍﻟﻘﻬﻭﺓ ﺍﻟﺗﻲ ﻳﺳﺗﺿﻳﻔﻬﺎ Le Circle. ﺍﺳﺗﻣﺗﻊ ﺑﺄﻓﺿﻝ ﻓﻧﺟﺎﻥ ﻣﻥ ﺍﻟﻘﻬﻭﺓ ﻭﺍﻟﻛﺭﻭﺍﺳﺎﻥ ﻓﻲ ﻫﺫﺍ ﺍﻟﺣﻲ. ﻫﻧﺎ ﻳﻣﻛﻧﻙ ﺍﻻﻟﺗﻘﺎء ﻭﺍﻟﺗﺣﺩﺙ ﻣﻊ ﺃﻋﺿﺎء ﺍﻟﺭﻋﻳﺔ ﻗﺑﻝ ﺭﺟﻭﻋﻙ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﻣﻧﺯﻝ. ﻧﺻﻠﻲ ﺃﻥ ﺗﻛﻭﻥ ﺃﺣﺩ ﺃﻫﺩﺍﻑ ﺍﻟﺳﻧﺔ ﺍﻟﺟﺩﻳﺩﺓ ﻫﻭ ﻣﻧﺢ ﻛﻧﻳﺳﺗﻙ ﻭﻗﺗًﺎ ﺃﻛﺛﺭ ﻣﻥ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻡ ﺍﻟﻣﺎﺿﻲ. ﻫﺫﻩ ﺭﻋﻳﺗﻙ ﻭﻫﺫﻩ ﻛﻧﻳﺳﺔ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﻳﺱ ﺟﺎﻭﺭﺟﻳﻭﺱ ﺍﻟﻣﺣﺑﻭﺏ ﻓﺎﻟﺭﺟﺎء ﺍﻟﻣﺳﺎﻋﺩﺓ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺣﻔﺎﻅ ﻋﻠﻳﻬﺎ ﻗﻭﻳﺔ. ﺑﺭﻛﺔ ﺍﻟﺭﺏ ﺗﺣﻝ ﻋﻠﻳﻛﻡ ﻭﻋﻠﻰ ﻋﺎﺋﻠﺗﻛﻡ. • The Baptism of Christ
Sunday after Theophany —the Baptism of Christ Also Commemorating—Martyr Tatiana of Rome and those with Her; Martyr Peter Absalom of Palestine; Virgin-martyr Euthasia; Martyr Mertios of Mauretania January 12, 2020 Welcome to our Guests— We are grateful that you have joined us for worship of God this morning! To follow along with the service, a service book is available for your use in the pew. While Holy Communion may only be received by prepared Orthodox Christians, our non-Orthodox Christian guests are welcome and invited to join us in veneration of the Holy Cross (held by the Priest) and receive holy bread (as a sign of hospitality) at the conclusion of the Liturgy. After the Dismissal, please join us in our Social Center (next door) for Coffee (Fellowship) Hour so that we can meet and greet you! Reception of Holy Communion— In order to receive Holy Communion (the Eucharist), Orthodox Christians must be prepared through fasting, prayer, the Sacrament of Confession, and be at peace with others. Also, it is of great importance to hear the Word of God (Epistle & Gospel readings) before receiving the Body and Blood of Christ (Holy Communion). Our Lord likens the Kingdom of God to a banquet in which we’ve been invited (which as Orthodox Christians, we believe that we are participating in the heavenly worship), thus we encourage you to be on time for Divine Liturgy and stay until the Dismissal. Parents and Children— The presence of children during worship is a gift from God and reminder that our parish community is growing! A little commotion and noise is understandable, but if you feel the need to exit the sanctuary, please use the “cry room” in the back (near the narthex) or the classroom area, and please come back.

Basil Cushman, Associate Pastor Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Miami V. Rev. Fr. Don Berge, Attached and the Southeast _____________________________________________ Sunday after Theophany ~ January 10, 2021 ~ Epistle: Ephesians 4:7-13 Gospel: Matthew 4:12-17 Welcome to all those visiting St. John Orthodox Church. We are honored by your presence. It is our sincere desire that your participation today in the Divine Liturgy will draw you closer to Christ and His Church. If you are from a non-Orthodox background you may see new things such as icons, incense, the sign of the cross, the veneration of saints, and a great deal of standing. These can be perplexing to the uninitiated eye. Rest assured that everything we do has a solid biblical foundation and a long history among Christian people. Please feel free to participate where you feel comfortable and feel equally as free only to observe when you prefer. The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, to be – among other things – the paramount expression of Christian unity. While it is our deepest hope that Christendom will one day fulfill Christ’s desire for true unity among all those who claim His name (John 17:21), the unfortunate reality of our day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith.

  • Akathist-Paraklesis
Introduction Eventually, everyone comes to dwell in darkness. Sooner or later, disaster strikes all the children of men, and we suffer heart-break, loss, bereavement and pain. It may come dramatically with a doctor’s announcement, saying that he has some bad news from the test results, or it may come unexpectedly with a visit from a policeman, saying that a loved one was involved in a tragedy. Suffering may come with divorce, or trouble with erring children. It may come as chronic pain from a debilitating disease; it may come as a depression which will not lift. One may suffer a loving friend and support moving away, or one may move away oneself, finding isolation in a strange and bewildering new place. It may come from a broken romance, or loneliness from failure to find a life partner. But eventually, everyone comes to dwell in darkness. It is just at that time that one needs to turn to Jesus, the one and only Light of the world, and the only rescue for those in the darkness of pain and despair. When one passes through those times of pain which wring the heart, one is called not to break down but to break through. Just as there is a sound barrier, so there is a kind of praise barrier, and one breaks through the darkness by offering praise to God. Praise at such times is not offered as the fruit of a contented and happy mood. Such praise is not the result of a feeling. It is offered in the teeth of feelings of pain, and in spite of emotional numbness which such feelings of pain can bring.

  • St. Tatiana of Rome, and Those Who Suffered with Her
St. Tatiana of Rome, and Those Who Suffered With Her Commemorated on January 12 The Holy Virgin Martyr Tatiana was born into an illustrious Roman family, and her father was elected consul three times. He was secretly a Christian and raised his daughter to be devoted to God and the Church. When she reached the age of maturity, Tatiana decided to remain a virgin, betrothing herself to Christ. Disdaining earthly riches, she sought instead the imperishable wealth of Heaven. She was made a deaconess in one of the Roman churches and served God in fasting and prayer, tending the sick and helping the needy. When Rome was ruled by the sixteen-year-old Alexander Severus (222-235), all power was concentrated in the hands of the regent Ulpian, an evil enemy and persecutor of Christians. Christian blood flowed like water. Tatiana was arrested and was brought into the temple of Apollo and forced to offer sacrifice to the idols. The saint began to pray, and suddenly there was an earthquake. The idols were smashed into pieces, and part of the temple collapsed and fell down on the pagan priests. The demon inhabiting the idols fled screeching from the temple. Those present saw its shadow flying through the air. The pagans then tore the holy virgin’s eyes out with hooks, but she bravely endured everything, praying for her tormentors that the Lord would open their spiritual eyes. The Lord heard the prayer of His servant. The executioners saw four angels encircle the saint and beat her tormentors. A voice was heard from the heavens speaking to the holy virgin.

Justification therefore is not a single, receive God’s forgiveness. To forgive and to be once-for-all event. Through God’s grace, we live under forgiven involve adopting the same inner posture of a continual outpouring of His justification and the heart. forgiveness, because we live in a constant state of repentance. I suspect this is why the Lord referred they were talking about prayer. They asked her to to our misdeed as “debts” (Greek opheilmata), and not share with them a Christian prayer, and all she could as (for example) transgressions or stains. For what is think of at the time was the Lord’s Prayer. When she a transgression (Greek paraptoma)? It is going too far, came to the part where it said, “Forgive us our going where you should not.
