Wood Research Impacts of Impregnation Chemicals On
WOOD RESEARCH 54 (4): 2009 67-78 IMPACTS OF IMPREGNATION CHEMICALS ON THE FLAME SOURCE COMBUSTION LIGHT INTENSITY OF THE LAMINATED VENEER LUMBER (LVL) Hakan Keskin Gazi University, Industrial Arts Education Faculty, Department of Idustrial Technology Education, Division of Material and Manufacturing Technology, Ankara, Turkey ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of impregnation chemicals on the flame source combustion light intensity of the LVL obtained from combination of Oriental beech + Lombardy poplar and European oak + Lombardy poplar woods, impregnated with boron compounds (Borax (Bx), Boric acid (Ba), Bx+Ba (wt:wt 50:50%)), Imersol-aqua (Ia) and Timbercare-aqua (Ta) according to ASTM D 1413-76-99 and directions of the manufacturer. LVL samples were prepared in the form of five layers, 3 mm thickness from the beech, oak and poplar veneers bonded with Desmodur-VTKA (DVTKA) and Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) adhesives, according to TS EN 386. The flame source combustion light intensity of the LVL test samples were determined according to ASTM E 160- 50. Consequently, the flame source combustion light intensity was the highest in oak- poplar combination, Ta and PVAc and the lowest in beech-poplar combination, Bx and DVTKA adhesive. In the interaction of the impregnation chemical, types of process and adhesive, it was the highest in beech-poplar combination + (Ba+Bx) + DVTKA (763.5 lux), but the lowest in beech-poplar combination + Ba + PVAc (582.7 lux). Accordingly, boric acid showed decreasing impact on the flame source combustion light intensity of LVL. In consequence, for places which has fire risk, usage of LVL impregnated with boric acid would be advantageous. -

4 Remembering the War in the Solomons
4 Remembering the War in the Solomons Jonathan Fiji'; The Coming of the War The white people told us that a war would eventually come. But even though we listened, we didn't believe them. We couldn't think of any reason that fighting would come to the Solomons. Other people advised us that if fighting did come, we shouldn't be afraid. They said that even if a bomb fell, it would be five minutes before it exploded. All we had to do was pick it up and throw it to where it would explode away from us! 1 In 1942 I was still at schooi at Kwailabesi, in northeast Malaita. One day we saw the Seventh Day Adventist ship Melanesia arrive. But there were no . Solomon Islanders aboard, only missionaries. They warned all of the students that fighting was coming soon. They said "We will be leaving tonight. We can't say if we will ever see you again. But though we are leaving, the Americans may come to evacuate you. You must not worry, because there are Seventh Day Adventists among the Americans too." Some of the other students and I prepared to see our teachers off. At dusk we boarded a small postal boat, and we and the Melanesia traveled along in the dark, without any lights. By daybreak we had reached Siota, on N ggela, and at Taroaniara we camouflaged the two boats with branches. We went in two dinghies to Tulagi, the capital at that time, to see what was happening there. Very few people remained in town. -

Hand Planes Are for Fine Woodworking
GarrettWade White Paper Steel and Wooden Planes In this age of power-driven tools, it’s easy to forget how important hand planes are for fine woodworking. Not only can you usually do better and more careful work with a hand plane, but you can often work much more quickly, because of power tool set-up time. Skill at hand planing is one of the most important abilities of any woodworking craftsman. Experience with hand planes will help you understand exactly what a power tool is doing when you use it for a particular job; an important and subtle appreciation, if one is to achieve consistently good results with power tools. A hand plane is also a far more forgiving tool; experienced woodworkers know that care sacrificed for speed ruins more otherwise good work than anything else. General Tips Here are a few hints about using any plane. First, keep the blade as sharp as possible. Bench stones and honing guides are excellent for this purpose. Secondly, with rare exception, plane with the grain. Look at the side of the stock to see at a glance which way the grain runs. If you don’t work with the grain, you run the danger of catching the grain, lifting chips of wood, and producing a rough surface. Exceptions to this rule are discussed with the applicable plane. When planing end grain, push the plane in one direction to the middle of the board only, then repeat this process going in the other direction. This prevents splitting the board at the edge. -
