HEEL AND TOE ONLINE The official organ of the Victorian Race Walking Club 2011/2012 Number 23 6 March 2012 VRWC Preferred Supplier of Shoes, clothes and sporting accessories. Address: RUNNERS WORLD, 598 High Street, East Kew, Victoria (Melways 45 G4) Telephone: 03 9817 3503 Hours : Monday to Friday: 9:30am to 5:30pm Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm Website: http://www.runnersworld.com.au/ TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK Last week's Walker of the Week was Claire Tallent who took all before her in winning the Women's 20km championship in Hobart in an Olympic A qualifying time of 1:32:58. This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. Jared and Claire with their second prize cheques in Chihuahua, along with Satoshi Yanagisawa (photo from Satoshi) MORE WALKERS ADDED TO THE AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM With the Australian T&F Olympic Trials completed last weekend in Melbourne, Athletics Australia has now released the names of the next group of Olympic selections and the walkers are to the fore. -

He joins Jemima Montag and Dane Bird-Smith who have already been pre-selected for the 20km. Further 20km walk additions are likely to take place when the qualification period for that event finishes on 29 th June. See the announcement at https://www.athletics.com.au/news/marathoners-selected-for-tokyo-2020-australian-olympic-team/. Well done Rhydian on your second Olympics. It is a just reward for all your hard work. I thought the MorelandStar (https://www.facebook.com/morelandstarnews/) summed it all up nicely LOCAL RESIDENT SELECTED FOR THE 2021 OLYMPICS The Australian Olympic Committee announced yesterday that Fawkner resident Rhydian Cowley has been selected for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games in the 50km Racewalk. If you walk along the Merri Creek trail, perhaps you’ve seen Rhydian as it’s where he does a lot of his training – particularly during lockdown. In addition to sessions at the gym, he says he walks between 105 to 150 kms per week. -

Competing in the World Masters Indoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea, she won the W65 3000m indoor walk in a World Record time of 16:57.96, bettering Mary Worth’s 1995 WR of 17:38.40 by a huge 41 secs. To put it in perspective, she won her age group by 60 seconds and was the fifth fastest woman overall, beating all but 4 of her many younger rivals in lower age groups. Read more about Heather’s wonderful career at http://www.vrwc.org.au/tim-archive/articles/wv-heather- carr.pdf. Heather on her way to victory in Daegu in the 3000m indoors walk WHAT'S COMING UP • The 2017 World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships continue this week in Daegu, South Korea. They run from Mar 18-29, 2017. The 10km road walks will be held on Friday. • The Victorian Masters Championships will be held at Doncaster next weekend (25-26 March). -

For many of our walkers, it was the last chance to walk at that venue before its final decommission in April. so the 5000m walks on Friday evening saw over 30 entries. David Armstrong of AthsVic TV has captured it for posterity with his usual high quality video clip – see http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=7IdOzm6LA6A And talking video clips, he has also released AthsVic TV clips from the Victorian Junior T&F walks the week before – well done David. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OtxXXyomEI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUQfuB5BrNY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISY2CV2-3_g Now onto Friday's walks. The 7:45PM timeslot meant perfect conditions and PBs were the order of the day. Rhydian Cowley went straight to the front with Stuart Kollmorgen on his heels. Both were rewarded with big PBs with Rhydian 20:23.61 getting ever closer to that magic 20 minute barrier and Stuart 22:05.40 continuing his wonderful season. Part time walker Danny Hawksworth took a fine third place with 23:40.75 but it is not his fastest. -
