All we can do at this stage is hope for the best. The NO campaign has been well run and has gained support from almost the entire world wide racewalking community. Let's not lose sight of what we want. • Keep the current 20km / 50km as the international racewalking distances until after the 2024 Olympics. • Use this extended timeframe to properly test the new shoe insert technology. • Work to enhance the current 20km / 50km events to make them more attractive to the general viewing public. • Visit this issue (if it still exists) again in 2024 once the shoe insert technology has been deemed to work (or not!) A few final bits and pieces from the last few days of the ongoing campaign. First, we have been getting some publicity from a few major news outlets. Here are a few snippets • Athletics Weekly article (https://www.athleticsweekly.com/news/race-walkers-unite-to-save-their-sport-1039921331/) • Article from Greek sports site sportsfeed.gr (http://sportsfeed.gr/2019/03/07/oi-vadistes-ksesikonontai-kai-pali-kata-ton-

Record Tom Bosworth th Race Walking 6 at Rio Olympics in a new August 2016 British Record Race Walking Record – August 2016 Over the next two kilometres, Bosworth sped up and was within eight minutes for the next 2km split around the Pontal course. But Matsunaga was race walking even faster and had closed the gap to two seconds, while China’s Zelin Cai decided to protectively cover the two men in front of him and had pushed hard to remove himself from the pack. World Race Walking Team Championships silver medallist Cai continued to motor and overtook Matsunaga and then Bosworth but The XXXI Olympic Games, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil the pack also started to increase their pace, consuming Bosworth and Men’s 20km (Fri. 12th Aug.): Despite the presence of Olympic Matsunaga just before the 14km checkpoint and Cai shortly after, champion Chen Ding and world champion Miguel Angel Lopez, the making it a 12-man mass together entering the final quarter of the pre-race favourite on current form was China’s Wang Zhen and the race. winner at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in The pack – which also contained local hope and Brazilian record- Rome back in May didn’t disappoint. holder Caio Bonfim, who was getting rousing cheers every step of the way – was reduced to nine over the next lap with Cai, whose cadence can best be described as a resembling a boxer doing his road workout, pushing the pace at the front. This remained the state of affairs until Wang, a much more fluent and elegant race walker than his teammate, made his decisive bid for glory with three kilometres to go.

MALE WALKERS SUPPORTING WOMEN’S 50K: A QUENTIN-SSENTIAL DUTY By Paul F. DeMeester I know. I misspelled the word “quintessential.” On purpose. The “Quentin-ssential” in the headline is a reference to New Zealand 50K specialist Quentin Rew, a veteran of two Olympics (27th at London 2012 in 3:55:03; 12th at Rio 2016 in 3:49:32) and five World Championships (23rd at Daegu 2011 in 4:08:46; 16th at Moscow 2013 in 3:50:27; 10th at Beijing 2015 in 3:48:48; 11th in London 2017 in 3:46:29; and 11th at Doha 2019 in 4:15:54). Rew has already qualified for Tokyo 2020, having bested the time limit of 3:50:00 by 12 seconds at the Japanese National Championship last year in Wajima.

This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. Jared and Claire with their second prize cheques in Chihuahua, along with Satoshi Yanagisawa (photo from Satoshi) MORE WALKERS ADDED TO THE AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM With the Australian T&F Olympic Trials completed last weekend in Melbourne, Athletics Australia has now released the names of the next group of Olympic selections and the walkers are to the fore.

  • Ohi.O Racewalker
OHI.O RACEWALKER VOLUME XXVII, NUMBER 4 COLUMBUS, OHIO JUNE 1991 Drama at World Cup as Soviet women, Italian men prevail; Mexicans shine individually San Jose, Cat, June 1-2 (Your editor reports from the scene)-After two days of exciting competition, the 1991 World Cup of Racewalking ended dramatically when Andrei Perlov, on his way to a gold medal at SO Km and an apparent team title for the Soviets, was swept from the course by Chief Judge Gary Westerfield just 10 Meters from the finish. As a result, the brilliant 24-year-old Carlos Mercenario of Mexico, who won at 20 Km in New York 4 years ago, took the gold, becoming the first man to win World Cup titles at both distances. (This was the fifteenth for men and seventh for women.) The Italians, coming through strongly over the second half of the 50, as they normally do, captured their second team title, after taking a commanding, and surprising, lead in the 20 Km. The Italians last won in 1981; but were second in three of the intervening Cups and third in the fourth. The Soviet women won their third straight Cup in the 10 Km, and made it four of the last five. Here, they left little doubt, taking first, third, and fourth in the race. Winner Irina Strakhova had been second in New York 4 years ago and won the World Championships that year, but had done little since. The surprising runnerup was Mexico's Graciela Mendoza, who had the race of her life, moving through the field the second 5 Km.
