The assistance was extended oy CARi^ (co-opera­ tive for American Relief Everywhere) in this oehalf, through the 'Poshak' progranuiie, which was launched in the state during the yecir 1^15, in consultation with Government of India. The progranuue covered children upto six years of age, in areas coverea ay selected primary health centres in the state. ^n Rvaluation of this prograifune Weis taken up with the following objectives. i) The numoer of chilaren actually receivea food suppleiuent anu the regularity of supply and dis triDut.ion „ ii) Ttie exten+'- to which the food supplement reached the target population. ill) whether c.iie food supplement was properly utilised Dy the recipients and the manner in which it was consumed. iv) The effect of the programaie on the selected popu­ la t io n . v) Usefulness of the programme. VI) The problems involved in the distribution and uti­ lisation of the food supplement and possiole s o l u t i o n s . The information requirea for the scudy was collected tirough schecules, questionnaires and interviews of the officials ana oeneficiaries. The Poshak programtie v/as in operation in 32 primary health centres spread out in eight districts of the state. ndineiy, beigaurn, riiciar, B i jd p u r , c hickiricigaxur, D ^k sh in a Kanndda, GuiiDarga/ Hassan and Mysore. For detailed study, 16 priiuary health centres, in four districts, namely, Belga-um, Dakshina Kannada, GulJoarga and Mysore were selected and 74 Deneficiaries covered. The analysis of the information coliectea indicateu the following. CaRh; food supplement was to oe supplied, at the rate of 80 Grams per day per oeneficiary, for all the 365 days in a year to children upto six years and from families whose income was t\d.3U0 per month or less. There were 48.68 iajchs of children, in age group of 0-6 years, in rural areas of the state. The total nunioer of such children in the eight districts covered toy the programme constituted 46 perceat of the aDove. If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt.

Among the taluks, the Chidanand P Mansur highest mean incidence of wilt (19.93%) was recorded in the Bagalkot taluk of Bagalkot district followed Dean, College of Agriculture, by Vijayapura taluk (9.27%) of Vijayapura district. The lowest incidence of pomegranate wilt (3.20%) Hanumanamatti, Karnataka, India was recorded in the Indi taluk of Vijayapura district. Among the districts, the highest mean incidence of wilt (15.27%) was recorded in Bagalkot district followed by Vijayapura district (6.23%). The lowest Kulapati Hipparagi incidence of pomegranate wilt (3.75%) was recorded in Chirtradurga district. Orchards of four years and Department of Fruit Science, above old planted under black soil showed higher incidence of wilt along with shot hole borer and root College of Horticulture, UHS, knot nematode infection.

It will play a significant role to address the unexpected disasters that occur in the district effectively. The information available in DDMP is valuable in terms of its use during disaster. Based on the history of various disasters that occur in the district, the plan has been so designed as an action plan rather than a resource book. Utmost attention has been paid to make it handy, precise rather than bulky one. This plan has been prepared which is based on the guidelines from the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM). While preparing this plan, most of the issues, relevant to crisis management, have been carefully dealt with. During the time of disaster there will be a delay before outside help arrives. At first, self-help is essential and depends on a prepared community which is alert and informed. Efforts have been made to collect and develop this plan to make it more applicable and effective to handle any type of disaster. The DDMP developed touch upon some significant issues like Incident Command System (ICS), In fact, the response mechanism, an important part of the plan is designed with the ICS. It is obvious that the ICS, a good model of crisis management has been included in the response part for the first time. It has been the most significant tool for the response manager to deal with the crisis within the limited period and to make optimum use of the available resources.

    Version 2.0 Krishna Basin Preface Optimal management of water resources is the necessity of time in the wake of development and growing need of population of India. The National Water Policy of India (2002) recognizes that development and management of water resources need to be governed by national perspectives in order to develop and conserve the scarce water resources in an integrated and environmentally sound basis. The policy emphasizes the need for effective management of water resources by intensifying research efforts in use of remote sensing technology and developing an information system. In this reference a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on December 3, 2008 between the Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to execute the project “Generation of Database and Implementation of Web enabled Water resources Information System in the Country” short named as India-WRIS WebGIS. India-WRIS WebGIS has been developed and is in public domain since December 2010 (www.india- wris.nrsc.gov.in). It provides a ‘Single Window solution’ for all water resources data and information in a standardized national GIS framework and allow users to search, access, visualize, understand and analyze comprehensive and contextual water resources data and information for planning, development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Basin is recognized as the ideal and practical unit of water resources management because it allows the holistic understanding of upstream-downstream hydrological interactions and solutions for management for all competing sectors of water demand. The practice of basin planning has developed due to the changing demands on river systems and the changing conditions of rivers by human interventions.

Formerly Assistant Director in Charge of Department of Entomology, Haffkine Institute, Bombay b Manuscript received in September 1949 The findings of the Plague Recrudescence Inquiry in Sholapur and Adjoining Districts, conducted by Sharif & Narasimham11 12 in the districts of Sholapur and Dharwar during 1940 to 1943, do not support the idea that wild rodents help to carry plague infection from one place to another as in " temperate climes ".4 Wild rodents cannot be considered responsible for plague in Bombay Province, though they have been shown to be so in Transbaikalia, Mongolia, South-Eastern Russia, South Africa, and the western parts of the USA.17 In Bombay Province, the domestic rat perpetuates the plague infection. In some suitable places the infection among domestic rats goes on throughout the year. The infection is not apparent during the hot and dry season, its intensity being diminished because of the ill effect of prevailing climatic conditions on the wanderings of adult rat-fleas ; it pursues the course of a slow subterranean enzootic from burrow to burrow. The conclusion of the off-season is characterized by the advent of the rainy season, which exerts its influence in two ways first, it causes the rats from outside shelters to herd into burrows indoors and remain there perforce, which results in a considerable increase in the rat population within houses; secondly, it brings down the temperature and increases the humidity to such an extent as to result in a striking rise in the flea population and to allow rat-fleas to come out of burrows to attack human beings.
