17Th Programme – Swansea Ramblers We Offer Short & Long Walks All Year Around and Welcome New Walkers to Try a Walk with U 17th Programme – Swansea Ramblers We offer short & long walks all year around and welcome new walkers to try a walk with us. 1 Front Cover Photograph: Table Mountain with view of Sugar Loaf v14 2 Swansea Ramblers’ membership benefits & events We have lots of walks and other events during the year so we thought you may like to see at a glance the sort of things you can do as a member of Swansea Ramblers: Programme of walks: We have long, medium & short walks to suit most tastes. The summer programme runs from April to September and the winter programme covers October to March. The programme is emailed & posted to members. Should you require an additional programme, this can be printed by going to our website. Evening walks: These are about 2-3 miles and we normally provide these in the summer. Monday Short walks: We also provide occasional 2-3 mile daytime walks as an introduction to walking, usually on a Monday. Saturday walks: We have a Saturday walk every week that is no more than 6 miles in length and these are a great way to begin exploring the countryside. Occasionally, in addition to the shorter walk, we may also provide a longer walk. Sunday walks: These alternate every other week between longer, harder walking for the more experienced walker and a medium walk which offers the next step up from the Saturday walks. Weekday walks: These take place on different days and can vary in length. Most are published in advance but we also have extra weekday walks at short notice. Social events: These include events such as meals out or boat trips on the Tawe. This is a great way to meet and get to know your fellow walkers. Details are emailed to members nearer the time so please make sure you have given us your email address. Weekends away: These are very popular events and take place at least once a year. Details are emailed to our members. Practical Work: We liaise with City & County of Swansea to ensure paths remain open for you to use and we have a regular team of volunteers who clear paths with the council throughout the year, so if you wish, you can come along on a work party and make a practical difference to walking in the area. 3 Reporting blocked paths: We liaise with the council to resolve path issues. If you find a blocked path you should first report it to the council. If you have just become a member and have already provided your email address, we will begin sending you this information. Making a difference: We helped to create walking routes such as the Gower Way and the Wales Coast Path. As a walking charity, we take part in discussions to improve access to the countryside and encourage more people to walk. If you would like to be involved in the running of Swansea Ramblers or maybe our Glamorgan Area council of local Ramblers’ groups, please let us know. Practical training: For anyone interested in helping us to provide more walks on the programmes, we are always happy to help our members learn how to lead a walk. Just ask one of us on a walk or contact the membership secretary. Occasionally, we are able to provide training courses run by Ramblers GB or the City & County of Swansea. Photographs and video are taken on most walks then used to publicise Swansea Ramblers on Bay TV Swansea, on the web and in periodicals such as Evening Post, What’s On, Swansea Life, etc. For many new members, these are their first introduction to our group and part of the reason they choose to walk with us. Information about Walking Gear: If you are new to walking, it can be a bit daunting to work out what gear to take on a walk. Whether it’s which boots are right for you or what type of waterproof clothing you may need, the ‘Go walking’ section of our national website, www.ramblers.org.uk, can help with useful advice to help you choose what equipment is right for you. It can also be visited by entering this link in your browser: http://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/advice-for- walkers/equipment.aspx 4 Walking with us Publicity photographs As mentioned above, we take publicity photographs and video of our walks. These can appear on the internet, YouTube, during our regular television appearances on Bay TV Swansea and in newspapers/periodicals such as What’s On and Swansea Life. If you do not wish to appear in these publicity materials then please let the leader know each time you join a walk. Do not rely on the photographer remembering your preferences from a previous walk. Additional walks after the programme has been printed These may be planned at short notice. Details will be emailed to members and appear on the web at least 5 days before the walk. If you can volunteer to lead such a walk, please contact the walk co-ordinator. Joining a walk Our walkers are very friendly and newcomers are especially welcome. We offer 3 ‘Taster walks’ so if you have enjoyed those walks and wish to continue to walk regularly with us, we will be pleased to invite you to become a member. Occasionally there are 1st year discounts so please ask for details. Membership can be set up online from our website or you can ask us for a membership form. You will need suitable footwear and clothing, enough food and drink plus a small First Aid pack. While the safety of members is always of paramount concern, accidents may occasionally occur so please carry ID and contact numbers. It is also important to appreciate that you have a responsibility for the safety of both yourself and fellow walkers. Additional advice about joining a walk. • Walk gradings are provided as a general guide only. If you have any doubt about your fitness for a particular walk please contact the organiser or leader in advance. • Bear in mind the distance of the walk, regional differences in terrain and the possibility of bad weather, which can make a walk more difficult than planned. • If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first - it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted. • Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. 5 Walks are graded as follows:- • Easy Access - walks for everyone, including people with conventional wheelchairs and pushchairs, using easy access paths. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn. Assistance may be needed to push wheelchairs on some sections, please contact the leader running the walk for details. • Easy - walks for anyone who does not have a mobility difficulty, a specific health problem or is seriously unfit. Suitable for pushchairs if they can be lifted over occasional obstructions. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn. • Easy/Moderate - walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended. • Moderate - walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. • Strenuous - walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country, and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. People in doubt about their fitness should contact the organiser or leader in advance. • Technical - walks for experienced and very fit walkers with additional technical skills. May require scrambling and use of ropes, ice axes and crampons. You must contact the organiser or leader in advance for further details. Meeting for the walk The start point of a walk is sometimes given in the programme in addition to the meeting point. In exceptional circumstances, the leader may need to cancel the walk. The leader will only inform those present at the meeting point. Anyone intending to travel directly to the start point is advised to contact the leader to confirm if the walk will go ahead. Using Public Transport Members are encouraged to plan/attend walks using public transport. Drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers. As a guide, 28 pence per mile per passenger is considered an amount that reasonably covers the costs incurred by the driver. To avoid disappointment, those wishing to request a lift should do so in advance of the walk rather than arrive at the meeting point expecting a lift to be available.

    Brecon Beacons National Park Authority Review of the Rights of Way Improvement Plan Questionnaire Results Background to the questionnaire In June 2007 the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority published its Rights of Way Improvement Plan (“ROWIP”). The ROWIP was the means by which the Authority identified, prioritised and planned for improvements to the rights of way network and access provision in the National Park for the subsequent 10 years. The ROWIP set out the priorities and objectives for access to the countryside and provided the basis for work on the rights of way network and on access land. The National Park Authority is now reviewing the ROWIP. The background to the ROWIP is contained in the separate “Assessments” document. As part of the review the Authority must undertake various assessments and to help with that process a questionnaire was devised to gather data from members of the public. Twenty four questions were used, as well as a few questions about the individuals completing the survey. The questionnaire was placed on the Authority’s website in both English and Welsh and a link to it was emailed to nearly 450 individuals and organisations which the Authority had already contacted about the review of the ROWIP. Hard copies could be requested also. The questionnaire was promoted in the local press and on social media several times during the period that it was on the website. A copy of the questionnaire is shown at Annex 1. Report Format This report will set out each question in turn and will display the responses diagrammatically.
