    M&S: Swimwear Style for the sun since the 1930s 1920s & 1930s In 1928 we sold bathing suits and bathing caps. Customers shopping for their holidays at M&S in the 1930s would have seen our advertising leaflet for woollen swimsuits. The swimsuits were colour-fast to both sea and sun so were wearable, durable and fashionable. The first swimsuits were offered in a variety of styles to suit the wearer’s modesty: from ‘a regulation one piece... which essentially spells swimming’ to ‘a combined brassiere and shorts to give the utmost comfort and freedom’. Swimwear Marketing Leaflet, 1930s Ref: HO/11/1/5/27 1939 Swimwear available in 1939 included expanding swimsuits, and swimsuits with ripple stitch detail. In the late 1930s we sold knitting patterns for clothing, including swimsuits. Knitting Pattern, late 1930s 1950s After the Second World War, Chairman Simon Marks knew the M&S customer was demanding ‘better materials, better design, better finish…’ Scientific developments made during the war were used to fulfil customers’ needs. New fabrics such as rayon and nylon were widely used to provide people with easy-wear, easy-care garments, and were perfect for swimwear. Shape-enhancing features, such as padded busts were introduced and strapless styles became popular. For men, swimming trunks with elasticated waists were big sellers in the 1950s. Blue Cotton Swimsuit, 1950s Ref: T52/3 1962 In the 1960s beachwear became more popular with customers. The M&S stand at the 1962 Ideal Home Show sold as much swimwear in one day as an average store would sell in a week! The stand was St Michael News, Spring 1962 a joint venture between M&S and British Nylon Spinners to promote Bri-Nylon.

Contestant must be single, never married/divorced, or had an annulment, nor had any children. This savior trope has been identified as a co-optation of women’s rights discourses and activism (Hunt 2002), a misguided approach to security through gendered scripts of masculine aggressive protection and female submission (Young 2003; Dowler 2002), and as yet another example in a long history of gendered tropes devised by colonial and imperial powers to save Muslim women (Abu Lughod 2002).

Sink or Swim: Deciding the Fate of the Miss America Swimsuit Competition Grace Slapak Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA ÒÏ Abstract: The Miss America beauty pageant has faced widespread criticism for the swimsuit portion of its show. Feminists claim that the event promotes objectification and oversexualization of contestants in direct contrast to the Miss America Organization’s (MAO) message of progressive female empowerment. The MAO’s position as the leading source of women’s scholarships worldwide begs the question: should women have to compete in a bikini to pay for a place in a cellular biology lecture? As dissent for the pageant mounts, the new head of the MAO Board of Directors, Gretchen Carlson, and the first all-female Board of Directors must decide where to steer the faltering organization. The MAO, like many other businesses, must choose whether to modernize in-line with social movements or whole-heartedly maintain their contentious traditions. When considering the MAO’s long and controversial history, along with their recent scandals, the #MeToo Movement, and the complex world of television entertainment, the path ahead is anything but clear. Ultimately, Gretchen Carlson and the Board of Directors may have to decide between their feminist beliefs and their professional business aspirations. Underlying this case, then, is the question of whether a sufficient definition of women’s leadership is simply leadership by women or if the term and its weight necessitate leadership for women. Will the board’s final decision keep this American institution afloat? And, more importantly, what precedent will it set for women executives who face similar quandaries of identity? In Murky Waters The Miss America Pageant has long occupied a special place in the American psyche.

Reading Houellebecq And His Fictions Abstract This dissertation explores the role of the author in literary criticism through the polarizing protagonist of contemporary French literature, Michel Houellebecq, whose novels have been both consecrated by France’s most prestigious literary prizes and mired in controversies. The polemics defining Houellebecq’s literary career fundamentally concern the blurring of lines between the author’s provocative public persona and his work. Amateur and professional readers alike often assimilate the public author, the implied author and his characters, disregarding the inherent heteroglossia of the novel and reducing Houellebecq’s works to thesis novels necessarily expressing the private opinions and prejudices of the author.
