Between 1932 and 1942 the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs directly oversaw the two offices of the Dean of Men and the Dean of Women. Today, the Office of the Dean of Students oversees several facets of student life at LSU, including Greek Life, Campus Life, Disability Services, and Student Advocacy and Accountability. The position of Dean of Women was established at LSU in the 1916-1917 school year, with Mamie R. Lewis serving as the first Dean. (Women first began enrolling in classes at LSU in 1904, but were initially considered “special students,” and were not regular members of the campus community.) As the student population grew to include more and more women, the Dean of Women dealt with the administrative aspects of a coeducational campus, including housing and social activities for both on- and off-campus college women. Dean M. Margaret Jameson occupied the position of Dean of Women from 1966 to 1976, and after that position was eliminated, she became Dean of Students from 1976 to 1989. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection contains organizational records, instructional material, minutes, reports, financial documents, brochures, handbooks, newsletters, scrapbooks, and photographs relating to business under both the Office of the Dean of Students and the Office of the Dean of Women. Also included are records from various sorority houses (which were administered by the Dean of Women), Women Off Campus, Student Government Association, student athletics, and more facets of student life at LSU. Major topics covered include the involvement of the Associated Women Students in the process of ending dorm regulations for women at LSU, the 1977-78 Iranian Revolution, materials from Freshman Days held in the 1930s and 1940s, and the compliance of social and professional fraternities with Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Also included are materials regarding impact of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 on scholastic and honor societies such as Mortar Board and Alpha Lambda Delta. 3 OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENTS RECORDS RG#A0302 1924-1987 LSU LIBRARIES, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIST OF SUB-GROUPS AND SERIES Subgroup 1.
