Drug Crimes Can Result in Loss Of • Since 1927 VOLUME 69, NUMBER 45 OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF THE 1992 OLYMPIC GAMES TUESDAY. APRIL 7,19!/? INSIDE Drug crimes can result in loss of aid By RACHEL MATHASON Staff Writer Under a new Department of Justice initiative, state and federal courts now have greater sanctions avail able to them when it comes to sentencing drug users and traffickers. One of these new penalties can have a direct affect on college students. The courts can immediately revoke financial aid from students who have been convicted of a drug-re lated offense, preventing them from continuing their educations. As part of the Department of Justice "Denial of Federal Benefits Program," now being implemented around the country, students who are convicted of drug crimes will have their names placed on a debar ment list. These students become ineligible for finan cial assistance from the federal government for a pre determined period of time. LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 3, Apr. 17, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: With the 2008-09 hoops season now in the record books, the collegiate spotlight is focusing more closely on the nation’s baseball diamonds. Though we’re heading into the final month of the season, there are still plenty of twists and turns ahead on the road to Omaha and the 2009 NCAA College World Series. The NCAA will soon be announcing details of next month’s tournament selection announcements naming the regional host sites (May 24) and the 64-team tournament field (May 25). To date, four different teams have claimed the top spot in the NCBWA’s national Division I polls --- Arizona State, Georgia, LSU, and North Carolina. Several other teams have graced the No. 1 position in other national polls. The NCAA’s mid-April RPI listing has Cal State Fullerton leading the 301-team pack, with 19 teams sporting 25-win records through games of April 12. For the record, New Mexico State tops the wins list with a 30-6 mark. As the conference races heat up from coast to coast, the NCBWA will begin the process for naming its All- America teams and the Divk Howser Trophy (see below). We will have a form going out to conference offices and Division I independents in coming days. Last year’s NCBWA-selected team included 56 outstanding baseball athletes, and we want to have the names of all deserving players on the table for consideration for this year’s awards.

LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 48, No. 4, June 29, 2009) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Joe Dier NCBWA Membership: More than four months after its official start back on Feb. 20, the 2009 college baseball season has found its way into the record books. What a season it was, with LSU, one of five different teams to hold down the top position in the NCBWA’s weekly national rankings during the year and besting Texas to capture the College World Series championship series at Omaha’s historic Rosenblatt Stadium. Worth noting from the 63rd national championship tournament is that the 15-game event drew a record 336,076 fans to Rosenblatt Stadium. And though this year’s champion, LSU, is among the 23 teams that have previously reigned as NCAA baseball champions, college baseball welcomed two newcomers to its national championship event. Southern Miss and Virginia became the 107th and 108th schools to compete in the CWS. More than a third of the schools that compete on the NCAA Division I level have now advanced to college baseball’s biggest stage. With construction on the new 24,000-seat TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha underway and venerable Rosenblatt Stadium set to host its 61st and final CWS in 2010, there could added incentive, if only for sentimental reasons, to advance to college baseball’s “final eight” next season. Back to 2009, though, and congratulations to our recently-crowned kings of diamonds: NCAA Division I national champion LSU (56-17), NCAA Division II champion Lynn University (46-16) of Boca Raton, Fla., and NCAA Division III champion University of St.
