Munnings on Track for Big Oaks Season THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2020 MUNNINGS ON TRACK FOR OWNERS WHO FINISHED BEHIND MAXIMUM SECURITY WANT HIM DQ=D BIG OAKS SEASON by Bill Finley The owners of Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) released a statement Wednesday saying they expect Maximum Security (New Year=s Day) to be disqualified from all his races, which would include the $20-million Saudi Cup. If so, Midnight Bisou would be placed first in the race. Bob Donaldson, the owner of Spun to Run (Hard Spun), who was second behind Maximum Security in the GI Cigar Mile H., also weighed in, saying he wants the New York Gaming Association to disqualify Maximum Security from that race. Midnight Bisou, who was beaten three-quarters of a length in the rich Saudi race, is owned by the partnership of Bloom Racing, Madaket Stables and Allen Racing. Wednesday, Bloom Racing managing partner Jeff Bloom issued a statement. by Katie Ritz Cont. p5 Off a modest initial stud of $12,500 back in 2011, Munnings (Speightstown) has written his own Cinderella story as he's worked his way to the top tier of the general sires list. But this IN TDN EUROPE TODAY year has potential to witness the sire=s biggest breakthrough yet. "He's a horse that really in the last two or three years has gained a lot of traction," said Adrian Wallace of Coolmore America. "When you stack him up against sires besides him on the general sires list, he looks to have really good value." His most recent success has been in no small part from two fillies hot on the GI Kentucky Oaks trail. Finite and Venetian Harbor currently rank first and third on Bill Finley's TDN Kentucky Oaks Top 10 list. "We're very proud of the people who have bred to him and proud of the owners who are enjoying the ride this year. It's an exciting time for Munnings," said Wallace. A homebred for Winchell Thoroughbreds, Finite broke her maiden at Kentucky Downs last September and never looked back. Undefeated in stakes company, the Asmussen trainee leads all contenders in terms of Oaks points with dual Grade II wins in the Golden Rod S. and the Rachel Alexandra S. "This is a filly that deserves her place on the list," Wallace said. "She's got a very high cruising speed and looks to be very hard to beat as we go farther on into the year." Trained by Richard Baltas, Venetian Harbor broke her maiden second time out by over 10 lengths at two before going on to win the GII Las Virgenes S. by nine in February. "She was ultra impressive in her last start and I think that if she can go on, she'll be a very exciting filly to watch down the road," Wallace said. Finite | Hodges Photo While Munnings himself excelled over seven furlongs, taking the GII Woody Stephens S., GII Tom Fool H., and the GII Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship S., his all-time leading earner, I'm A Chatterbox, achieved her three Grade I wins at distances beyond a mile. "I think that for most of Munnings's progeny, they've got his high cruising speed and they're tough, but they also have the stamina to go a mile and beyond," Wallace noted. "With these two fillies, hopefully, we'll see them go the Oaks distance in the near future." A son of Speightstown, Munnings is out of the Holy Bull mare La Comete, who produced a second stakes winner in Munnings Sister (Speightstown). His second dam, La Gueriere (Lord at War {Arg}) won the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. at Keeneland. "While he has Storm Cat and Mr. Prospector on the top, he's a complete outcross on the dam side, which makes him very attractive for the vast majority of American bloodlines," Wallace said. "Finite is out of a Tapit mare, so he works well with the A.P. Indy and Pulpit lines. And Venetian Harbor is out of a Street Cry (Ire) mare, so he also works well being bred back into Mr. Prospector. He's had good success with Sadler's Wells through El Prado and Medaglia d'Oro, so I think there's great scope to breed into most American bloodlines." Espinoza, Victor (HOF 2017): Born: May 23, 1972 From: Mexico City, Mexico. Born on a dairy farm in Hidalgo, Mexico, the 11th of 12 children. He grew up riding horses and when he was 17 paid for Jockey School by driving a bus in Mexico City—that was 1989 (Quote: “It’s a lot easier riding horses than driving in that traffic in Mexico City.”). He shifted his tack North of the border all the way up to Northern CA in 1994 and, while he spoke no English when he arrived in the United States he managed to be the leading apprentice rider at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. In 1995 he began riding in Southern CA. His first big win was in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Distaff aboard Spain and then in 2002 he won his first of 3 Derbies and first Preakness Stakes (both aboard War Emblem). Espinoza is not married and he has no children. He donates 10% of his earnings to “City of Hope” to support pediatric cancer research. In 2015, Espinoza earned his second straight Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victory aboard American Pharoah and was finally able accomplish something he had failed to do in 2014 (California Chrome) and 2002 (War Emblem) – he won the Triple Crown. When he crossed the finish line first in the Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah became the 12th Triple Crown winner in history and the first in 37 years. In 2015 he won his second ESPY Award for Best Jockey after also winning in 2002. Inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2017—3rd year in a row to be nominated.

THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2019 DAUGHTERS MAY SPARK PET AND MRI: A BRAVE NEW DIAGNOSTIC WORLD by Dan Ross JUMP START'S LEGACY Earlier this month, The Stronach Group announced the arrival later this year at Santa Anita of the Longmile Positron Emission Tomography (MILE-PET) Scan machine--a technology currently under development at California's UC Davis, that could revolutionize the diagnosis of emerging lower limb injuries that could deteriorate into something catastrophic. But Santa Anita's new PET scan machine might not be the only important development at the track. According to CHRB equine medical director Rick Arthur, efforts are afoot to possibly bring a standing MRI to Santa Anita. The MRI machine's possible arrival raises some interesting tensions between the two diagnostic modalities. Indeed, proponents of both technologies argue passionately about their individual merits in early injury detection. But what isn't up for debate is how they both present a win for the horse. By Mike Shutty, HorseRacingNation.com Early Edition HORSE RACING NATION’S KENTUCKY DERBY SUPER SCREENER INTRODUCTION There are countless ways to dissect the probable Kentucky Derby field in search of the ultimate winner. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must
