Espinoza, Victor (HOF 2017): Born: May 23, 1972 From: Mexico City, Mexico. Born on a dairy farm in Hidalgo, Mexico, the 11th of 12 children. He grew up riding horses and when he was 17 paid for Jockey School by driving a bus in Mexico City—that was 1989 (Quote: “It’s a lot easier riding horses than driving in that traffic in Mexico City.”). He shifted his tack North of the border all the way up to Northern CA in 1994 and, while he spoke no English when he arrived in the United States he managed to be the leading apprentice rider at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields. In 1995 he began riding in Southern CA. His first big win was in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Distaff aboard Spain and then in 2002 he won his first of 3 Derbies and first Preakness Stakes (both aboard War Emblem). Espinoza is not married and he has no children. He donates 10% of his earnings to “City of Hope” to support pediatric cancer research. In 2015, Espinoza earned his second straight Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victory aboard American Pharoah and was finally able accomplish something he had failed to do in 2014 (California Chrome) and 2002 (War Emblem) – he won the Triple Crown. When he crossed the finish line first in the Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah became the 12th Triple Crown winner in history and the first in 37 years. In 2015 he won his second ESPY Award for Best Jockey after also winning in 2002. Inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2017—3rd year in a row to be nominated.

By Mike Shutty, HorseRacingNation.com Early Edition HORSE RACING NATION’S KENTUCKY DERBY SUPER SCREENER INTRODUCTION There are countless ways to dissect the probable Kentucky Derby field in search of the ultimate winner. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must

American Pharoah: Just one of the Triple Crown winners you’ll find floating down the Mississippi Written by: Amanda Duckworth March 19, 2018 The 120-foot long American Pharoah is the largest of the Turn Services New Orleans fleet. Photos: Turn Services Anyone in New Orleans for the Louisiana Derby should keep an eye out on the riv- er for American Pharoah. Not THE American Pharoah, of course, but rather M/V American Pharoah, one of about two dozen tow boats named after famous race- horses that make up Turn Services’ fleet. While it might be unexpected to see the likes of Secretariat and Seattle Slew floating down the Mississippi River, Turn Services was founded in 1990 and is one of the largest independent fleeting and shifting compa- nies in the United States. The company’s current chairman, David Fennelly, was born in Ireland, and when he came to the United States to make his way in the world, he started as a groom at Spendthrift Farm. “He decided to try to make the American Dream happen, and he moved to Lexington to become a farm hand,” said Mario Muñoz, the president of Turn Services. “Mucking stalls and doing whatever he could do, that was his first foray into business here. He came to the U.S. with about $400 in his pocket, got a job at Spendthrift, and the rest is history. He’s always loved horses.” 1 The Native Dancer: “There are a lot of great horses from the past that have captured the hearts and minds of the world when they were racing, and we try to honor them,” says Turn Services president Mario Muñoz.
