  • (Diptera) from Southern Spain. by Gunnar Carlsson Kurirgatan 9, Halsingborg, Sweden
202 Entomologiske M eddelelser 37 (1969) Some Simuliidae (Diptera) from Southern Spain. By Gunnar Carlsson Kurirgatan 9, Halsingborg, Sweden. In March, April and May 1966 an expedition from the Zoolo gical Museums in Copenhagen and Helsinki visited Southern Spain, where the members brought together a collection of, among other things, black flies. This was later completed with Dr. J. R. Vockeroth's material of Simuliidae, collected in July 1960 in the same area. Some of this 1960 material was identified by Dr. Vockeroth. This is indicated by (V) below. During the years some records of Simuliidae from Spain have been published, viz., Grenier & Bertrand, 1954 (15 species mentioned), and Doby, David & Raul, 1964. More thorough investigations on black flies in Spain will probably at least double the number of species mentioned by Grenier & Bertrand. In the present material there are at least twelve species represented. Three of these are probably new to science and an additional two are new to Spain. I am indebted to Mr. Leif Lyneborg for his permission to work up this material and to Dr. Vockeroth for allowing me to examine his collection of black flies. Prosimulium inflatum Davies, 1957 Material.- GRANADA: Rio Lanjaron 9 km NW Orgiva, 1600 m, 1 cJ, 7 May 1966. Distribution. - Europe, especially Britain, Scandinavia and USSR (Komi ASSR). New to Spain. Remarks. - The species-complex P. hirtipes has previously been divided into some new species of which P. inflatum is con .sidered to be closely allied to the true P. hirtipes Fries, 1824. • An Anonymous Andalusian Elegy on the War of Granada
ASIAN AND AFRICAN STUDIES, 9, 2000, 1, 51-56 AN ANONYMOUS ANDALUSIAN ELEGY ON THE WAR OF GRANADA Sami A. H a n n a 2625 SE Market Street, Portland, OR 97214-4946, U.S.A. The war of Granada, one of the decisive milestones of the defeat of the Andalusian Arabs and their final departure from Spain in the fifteenth century is here commemorated by an Andalusian elegy. There has been and there still is a great deal of disagreement among scholars about certain Andalusian elegies, especially those concerned with the fall of great cities, castles and cultural centres in the hands of the Christians which marked the final departure of the Arabs from Spain in the fifteenth century. During that period, many Arab poets witnessed the great fall and destruction of Arab Spain. Some of them, such as Abū al-Baqā’ al-Rundi1 whose elegies are cited by many scholars, wept for the great losses and cried for help through poetic elegies. Among these great cities and cultural centres which fell, Granada seems to have captured those poets’ imagination, emotions and appeals.2Moreover, Gra nada seems to have maintained the intellectual traditions and cultural life which were earlier carried on by the Muwahhidln. Its culture in general was typically Islamic with its very own character (Al-Dāyah 1976: 26). Most of the poetry of that period was a direct or indirect echo of the war be tween the Muslims of Andalusia and their Christian enemies. It was a literature depicting the Andalusians’ calamity for losing parts of their country and inciting the people to stand up and continue fighting.

HE CHOIR STALLS OF TOLEDO T AND THE CRUSADE TO CAPTURE GRENADA Tames P. RYAN THE CHOIR STALLS OF TOLEDO AND THE CRUSADE... On nepeutpas considerer cessculptures comme des chroniquespane qu'ily a trop d'erreurs, maisplutot comme des illustrations d'apres des manuscritsproto-historiques et surtout comme une oeuvre artistique de la fin du Moyen Age. he lower rank of the choir stalls of Toledo cathedral contains masterpieces of late medieval art, carved between 1489 and 1495 Tby Rodrigo Aleman, a German craftsman who made his way to Spain in the late fifteenth century. Surviving documents tell us a great deal about him and indicate his influence on Iberian wood carving at the dawn of the Renaissance. The choir stalls of Toledo cathedral are among his earliest recorded commissions, and he may have risen to promi- nence through these works.
