“Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's”--Doc Watson, Clarence Ashley, et.al. (1960-1962) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Steve Kaufman (guest post)* Album cover In 1960, Smithsonian historian Ralph Rinzler convinced the virtually unknown Clarence “Tom” Ashley, Doc Watson, Gather Carlton, Jack Johnson, Fred Price and Clint Howard to walk into the studio and record their mountain heritage music. Ralph Rinzler met Clarence at an Old Time Fiddler’s Convention. Ashley hadn’t played banjo for many years, but Ralph convinced him to pick it back up again and record it. Doc Watson didn’t own an acoustic guitar at the time. He had been playing in a rockabilly band playing square dances and the like. Doc honed his instrumental skills playing fiddle tunes on the guitar. Doc told me that the square dance bands he played in did not have a fiddle player so he played the tune as the fiddle would. This combination of Clarence on banjo and Doc on guitar and banjo, along with Fred Price and Gaither Carlton on fiddle, make an old-time band that is authentic and powerful. Seventeen songs make up this collection, of which T. Clarence Ashley wrote nine. It seems odd that he would credit the song as being by T.C. Ashley. He would credit his singing as Tom Ashley. Doc would credit him as Clarence throughout Doc’s long career. I’ve heard Doc mention Clarence on many occasions. These are the original tracks to this classic “Old Time” recording. It was recorded in Shouns, Tennessee; Saltville, Virginia; and Deep Gap, North Carolina. -

ROCK'N'ROLL’S 1ST DECADE Week One: The Roots of Rock Recommended Listening: The Delmore Brothers, Freight Train Boogie (Ace, 1993). Country-boogie songs from 1946-51 by this brother duo, whose more uptempo material was not only some of the finest country music of the era, but an important building block of rockabilly and early rock & roll. Fats Domino, The Early Imperial Singles 1950-1952 (Ace, 1996 & 1997). Thorough collections of the first few years or so of singles by the most important early New Orleans rock'n'roll star, whose singles of the early 1950s weren't all that different from the pop hits he had after rock took off. The Drifters, Let the Boogie-Woogie Roll: Greatest Hits 1953-1958 (Atlantic, 1988). Perhaps the most consistent, and certainly one of the most important, of the doo wop groups that had their first success prior to 1955. This has their mid-1950s R&B hits, some of them featuring lead singer Clyde McPhatter. The Drifters who had numerous early soul hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s had entirely different personnel, and were linked to this version of the group only by the trademark name. Bill Haley & His Comets, Rock the Joint! The Original Essex Recordings 1951-1954 (Rollercoaster, 1992). Bill Haley & His Comets were the first white band to fuse rhythm and blues with country music into something recognizable as rock'n'roll, and were doing so for four years before "Rock Around the Clock" became the first huge rock hit. This has those early recordings, including one from 1952 ("Rock the Joint") quite similar to "Rock Around the Clock," and his first single to become a Top Twenty pop hit, 1953's "Crazy, Man, Crazy." An award was presented to Alton Delmore for "Beautiful Brown Eyes" in 1951. Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith (April 10, 1898 - February 28, 1971) was born and raised on a farm near Bold Springs, Tennessee. He learned to play the fiddle at an early age, Alton and Rabon Delmore his first influence being the fiddlers Grady Stringer and Walter Warden. He married in 1914 at the age of sixteen. Initially he began performing at local dances and fiddlers' conventions. He teamed up with his wife Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith Nettie, his cousin Homer Smith and fiddler Floyd Ethredge. In 1921, Smith began working as a logger and a linesman for a railroad company in Dickson, Tennessee. -

American film actor, director, producer, composer and politician. Eastwood first came to prominence as a supporting cast member in the TV series Rawhide (1959–1965). He rose to fame for playing the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy of spaghetti westerns (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) during the 1960s, and as San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry films (Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool) during the 1970s and 1980s. The Gibson Brothers They Called It Music. ~ ( ( Compass 4599 ) ) “They called it music, in the church house and the fields / It was honest, it was simple, and it helped the hard times heal” Last year, Eric and Leigh Gibson found that lyric, from the title track of their new record They Called It Music, to be truer than they could have realized. 2012 was a year of triumph for the Gibsons, who took home the Entertainer of the Year trophy, bluegrass music’s highest honor, at the International Bluegrass Music Awards. But it was also a time of tragedy due to the death of their father, the duo’s biggest supporter, who passed away before he saw his boys recognized on bluegrass music’s biggest stage. Kelley Gibson, the last in a line of family farmers who had tended soil and raised dairy cattle since the Civil War, was adamant that his two sons not follow in his footsteps; he knew all too well the backbreaking labor and financial instability such a career entailed, especially in a town like Ellenburg Depot in upstate New York, where the climate is temperamental and the land ill-suited for growing much beyond hay for the herds. When it comes to sustainability and stability, a career in music isn’t the first that comes to mind. But Eric and Leigh, despite being geographically removed from the genre’s Appalachian roots, have made a name for themselves in bluegrass over the past two decades, playing over 80 shows and festivals a year and gradually building a deeply dedicated, nationwide fan base with their spellbinding harmony singing, which can reach the high lonesome notes of Bill and Charlie Monroe and capture the tenderness of pop/country crooners the Everly Brothers. -

A deluxe edition of the soundtrack featuring all 23 songs from the film, sequenced in their running order, will be in stores on February 2nd. The releases are companions to the upcoming Fox Searchlight Pictures movie Crazy Heart, starring Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Robert Duvall. The soundtrack was co-produced by 10-time Grammy® Award winner T Bone Burnett who is also credited with the 2009 Album Of The Year and Record of the Year Raising Sand, the worldwide smash album from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Burnett, who co-produced the soundtrack with guitarist/songwriter Stephen Bruton, earned past Grammy Awards for his work on the 8-times Platinum release, O Brother Where Art Thou? and Platinum soundtrack to the Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line. The film Crazy Heart, which will have a limited release December 16th and opens wider in January, is already garnering praise from the press including The Wrap who declared, “The Oscar race needs to make room for Jeff Bridges and T Bone Burnett.” With Burnett also producing the film, the music plays a prominent role. -

“When I Stop Dreaming”--The Louvin Brothers (1955) Added to the National Registry: 2014 Essay by Benjamin Whitmer (guest post)* The Louvin Brothers Original label Charlie and Ira Louvin, the brothers who made up the blood-harmony duo the Louvin Brothers, had to fight tooth and nail to get “When I Stop Dreaming” recorded. After working their way off their family cotton farm and away from their abusive father, it had taken them 20 years to make the Grand Ole Opry and sign a major recording contract with Capitol Records. The problem being, now, Charlie and Ira found themselves pigeon-holed as gospel-only artists, which wasn’t doing their career any favors. As Charlie described it to me, the gospel people really didn’t like them much because they played string instruments. Since in the gospel world the piano was the only acceptable instrument, the strings made the audiences consider the Louvin Brothers as something like carnival people. Likewise, when the brothers played country music venues, their gospel music brought down all the people who were just trying to have fun. People don’t want to hear about God on Saturday night; that’s for Sunday morning. As Charlie put it, “We was pretty close to being a fart in a whirlwind.” They knew they needed a secular song if they were ever going to get out of the gospel trap. So they approached their A&R man at Capitol Records, Ken Nelson, with the idea. Nelson was not amused. Capitol Records had just tried a similar transition from gospel to secular with a singer named Martha Cross. -

I was four years old when my uncle, Jack Henderson, the program director of 50,000 watt KCUL-AM in Fort Worth/Dallas, came to visit my family in 1959. He brought me around one hundred and fifty 45 RPM records from his station (duplicate copies that they no longer needed) and a small record player that played only 45s (not albums). I played those records day and night, completely wore them out. From that point, I wanted to be a disc jockey. But instead of going for the usual “comedic” approach most DJs took, I tried to be more informative by dropping in tidbits of a song’s background, something that always fascinated me. Originally with my “Classic Country Music Stories” site on Facebook (which is still going strong), and now with this book, I can tell the whole story, something that time restraints on radio wouldn’t allow. I began deejaying as a career at the age of sixteen in 1971, most notably at Nashville’s WENO-AM and WKDA- AM, Lakeland, Florida’s WPCV-FM (past winner of the “Radio Station of the Year” award from the Country Music Association), and Springfield, Missouri’s KTTS AM & FM and KWTO-AM, but with syndication and automation which overwhelmed radio some twenty-five years ago, my final DJ position ended in 1992. -
