The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC. -

RATIONALE 1.1 Greek, of which the modern Greek language is its latest development, belongs to the family of Indo-European languages. With the decipherment of the linear B tablets, the written record of the Greek language now extends back to at least 1200 B.C. 1.2 The ancient Greeks were the first European people to record comprehensively -consciously and unconsciously - their intellectual development in the historical, psychological, political, philosophical, literary, artistic and mathematical domains. Consequently the roots of most major intellectual pursuits today derive ultimately from a Greek foundation. In the political field, for example, we owe to the Greeks our notions of monarchy, oligarchy and democracy. Indeed the words we use to indicate such political situations are themselves Greek, as is the fundamental term 'politician'. Likewise, the need we feel to investigate and record impartially contemporary events for future generations (essentially current affairs and history) was a Greek preoccupation. (The Greek word historia means both 'the activity of learning by inquiry' and 'the retelling of what one has learnt by inquiry', which is what the great Greek historians and philosophers tried to do.) 1.3 The Greeks recorded this intellectual development not only with the brilliant clarity of pioneers but with a sublimity which transcends its era and guarantees its timelessness. 1.4 The particular educational importance of Greek rests on the following general -

FORMATION OF DELIAN LEAGUE TO FALL OF ATHENS ERA SUMMARY – ATHENIAN EMPIRE In the years following the Persian War, Athens was rebuilt and the Greek navy expanded its domination of the Aegean Sea. Further naval victories over Persia resulted in the freeing of several Ionian Greek colonies from the Persian yoke and the increased prestige of Greece as a sea power. Athenian control of the Greek navy was made possible the by creation of the Delian league, a group of Greek colonies located in the Aegean Sea united for defense. Although this league was nominally a confederation, it was dominated by Athens, and eventually became the foundation of the Athenian Empire. Athens became very wealthy due both to its domination of trade in the region and also to the inflow of tribute that had to be paid to Athens in return for protection from Persia. The most important statesmen in Athens in the years immediately after the Persian War, were Cimon, son of Miltiades, and Aristides. Both were involved in the organization of the Delian league and the rebuilding of Athens, including the construction of a fortified wall around the city to protect it from future invasions. Sparta opposed the building of walled cities, lest they fall into enemy hands, but the Athenians insisted and eventually a great wall was built from Athens to the sea, wide enough to drive two Chariots abreast. During the same period, great temples and state houses were built, funded mostly from the Delian league tributes, on a scale never before seen on the continent of Europe. -

However, as you well know, this year has been unlike any other in our collective memory. Our exciting plans for 2020 were thrown into disarray, just like many of yours. We were so disappointed that so many of you were unable to travel with us in 2020. Our greatest pleasure is to share the destinations we have grown to love so deeply with you our wonderful guests. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with many of you personally during the 2020 season. I was warmed and touched by your support, your understanding, your patience, and your generosity. All of us here at PST are extremely grateful and heartened by your enthusiasm and eagerness to travel with us when it becomes possible. PST is a small, flexible, and dynamic company. We have weathered countless downturns during the many years we have been operating. Elin, my wife, and I have always reinvested in the business with long term goals and are very used to surviving all manner of curve balls, although COVID-19 is certainly the biggest we have yet faced. -

In May 2022, VENT is returning to Greece for a fabulous History and Nature cruise. The event, a Circumnavigation of the Peloponnese, will delve into the country’s illustrious history and culture while observing the region’s special resident and migrant birds and other aspects of the natural world. We have chartered the Harmony V, an elegant motor yacht, for a trip offering an abundance of beautiful scenery, visits to timeless archaeological sites and extraordinary museums, historical interpretation, quality birding, and cruising along the dramatic Greek coastline. While the white walled, blue-domed roofs of the tourist friendly Aegean islands figure preeminently in the plans of many visitors, it is the Peloponnesian Peninsula and nearby Athens where the heart of ancient Greece lies. From this largely rugged terrain, inhabited by ancient peoples, came words and thoughts never before conceived, ideas that together formed the basis of Western Civilization. History, philosophy, politics, theater, and athletics all made their debut here. -
