These notes are based upon 14 meetings between 6th-9th October 2015, plus one further meeting in January 2016. This document will ultimately form an appendix to the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’ piece Although the findings have been arranged and structured by Imperial College London, they remain a collation of thoughts and statements from interviewees, and continue to be the opinions of those interviewed, rather than of Imperial College London. Prefacing the notes is a summary of Imperial College’s key findings based on comments made, which will be drawn out further in the final report for ‘The Operator’s Story’. Method This content is a collation in note form of views expressed in the interviews that were conducted for this study. Comments are not attributed to specific individuals, as agreed with the interviewees and TfL. However, in some cases it is noted that a comment was made by an individual external not employed by TfL (‘external commentator’), where it is appropriate to draw a distinction between views expressed by TfL themselves and those expressed about their organisation. -

This has been the subject of much correspondence from those afflicted with the problem and we are very fortunate to have a number of people with us this morning who are going to be able to speak to how it has been impacting on them and their neighbourhood and their neighbours. We are also very fortunate to have some guests from Transport for London (TfL) who are, hopefully, going to be able to explain some of the ins and outs of the solutions and how quickly they may or may not be applied. Just to introduce our guests, we have Richard Collins. You are very welcome. He is from the Barbican Association, which has a working group on Underground issues. We have Ian Kitson, who is a resident in Marylebone. You are very welcome as well. We have Liz Lawson, who is from the Archway Tube Noise Action Group. We have Razana Yoosuf, who is a resident in Mornington Crescent. We also have with us from TfL Helen Woolston [Sustainability Co-ordinator, London Underground] and Duncan Weir [Head of Operational Upgrades & Asset Development, London Underground]. Call for entries from architects, designers and artists to improve Culture Mile’s pedestrian experience along its North-South route The City of London Corporation is delighted to announce a call for entries to improve wayfinding, walkability and the pedestrian experience along Culture Mile’s ‘North-South route’ between the Millennium Bridge and Barbican. The City of London Corporation is seeking an innovative design concept and proposal for the ‘Culture Mile North-South Route’, between the Millennium Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, Aldersgate Street and St Martin’s-le-Grand, to be included as part of the Culture Mile 2019-2020 public programme. The City is looking for inspiring designs that will improve the wayfinding, walkability, appearance and vitality of this key thoroughfare, which links the Southbank to the Culture Mile area. This busy route incorporates entrances to several landmarks, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, the Museum of London and the Barbican estate. It includes the Barbican and St Paul’s underground stations, which collectively provide over 28 million passenger entrances/exits annually. We are inviting architects, designers and artists to submit a concept design that will elevate and enhance the look and feel of this area, providing visual cues, increased wayfinding and a deeper sense of connection between St Paul’s and Barbican underground stations. Following the shortlist of entries in July, the winning team will be revealed and commissioned to develop a fully costed, feasible design that can be installed in a section of the route, subject to planning permission and other relevant City authorisations. The design will remain in situ between Autumn 2019 and Spring 2020. -
