Hope, Caergwrle and Abermorddu Scarecrow Competition 2020 HOPE COMMUNITY COUNCIL CYNGOR CYMUNED YR HOB _________________________________ Hope, Caergwrle and Abermorddu Scarecrow Competition 2020 1st Prize £50 of gardening vouchers 2nd Prize £30 of gardening vouchers 3rd Prize £20 of gardening vouchers RULES: - Scarecrows must be displayed and clearly visible from the outside of your property by 9am on 1st August 2020 – 1st September 2020 - Your scarecrow must have a name which should be placed on the entry form. - Your scarecrow must be an original piece of work made from scratch. - Your scarecrow must be in ‘good taste’ and suitable for a family/community event. - Your scarecrow should be able to withstand all weather conditions. - Your scarecrow must be placed outside of your own property or on your property land and be clearly visible from the highway. - You must take reasonable care and responsibility to ensure the safety of the exhibit and people approaching to view it. - General road safety needs to be considered when determining the placement of your scarecrow, i.e. it must not cause a highway or public footpath obstruction. - You are encouraged to use recycled or natural material (e.g. straw) in the construction of your scarecrow. - You may use props and accessories to enhance your scarecrow and to provide context. - Your entry may be made up of multiple scarecrows but this must be clearly stated on your entry form. - You must take responsibility to remove your entry once the competition has finished. - The closing date for applications will be Sunday 26th July 2020. Any applications received after this date may not be included in the competition. JUDGING: - Judging will take place during the 2nd week of August 2020. - The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. - The Judges will be looking at the following: o VISIBILITY – How visible from the front of the house? Please note if houses have items such as streetlamps/trees not within their boundary this is not counted. o ORIGINALITY – How original? Is it the only type of scarecrow? E.g. are there more than 1 of the same? o AESTHETICS – How aesthetically pleasing is the scarecrow? How much attention to detail has gone into this (e.g. this should be age appropriate, if made by a child for example). o HANDMADE – How much attention to detail has gone into it? E.g. does it simply have a pre-made costume on or has it been custom made? o COMPLEXITY – How complex was the scarecrow to make? E.g. is it stood up straight (max of 3 points) or in a complex position/dangling off a building etc. o RECYCLABILITY – Are recyclable materials used? Plastic is a big no-no. o SURROUNDING AREA – Are there interesting props etc contributing to the scarecrow? The Chair welcomed the public and invited them to speak. S. Finn raised the following: From 2018 over 200 people have signed a petition with reference to the work and destruction of the ancient woodland in the Glascoed valley (referred to as Coed y Felin), Ffrith. The operation of machinery in the woods that has caused damage to historical structures, the collapse of the bank and flooding on the highway. The removal of hundreds of trees not only from Coed-y-Felin but also on a neighbouring property without permission. Despite NRW (Natural Resources Wales), Flintshire and Wrexham Council departments being involved the woodland remains under threat from the landowner. Residents are now discussing the possibility of acquiring some of the land as a community project, with looking for support from the local communities, neighbours and relevant organisations. The long term aim include the following: • Allowing re-generation, restoring biodiversity & planting native trees. • Reinstating the footpaths and creating an accessible woodland space for outdoor education and low impact recreational activities. • Preserving what is left of industrial structures, as they connect us historically with the Brymbo Heritage site and past industry all the way along the Cegidog valley to Llanfynydd and Coed-Talon.

    Flintshire Local Development Plan HOPE, CAERGWRLE, ABERMORDDU & CEFN Y BEDD - SETTLEMENT SERVICE AUDIT Settlement Commentary Hope, Caergwrle, Abermorddu and Cefn y Bedd are four individual villages lying alongside the Wrexham – Bidston railway and have over time coalesced. Hope and Caergwrle benefit from significant service and facility provision which also serve and benefit the southern villages of Abermorddu and Cefn y Bedd. The railway line here with stations at Hope, Caergwrle and Cefn y Bedd provides convenient access to Wrexham and allows further journeys to Bidston and Manchester, Liverpool and London (change at Shotton station). Service provision here is significant as illustrated in the accompanying mapping diagram of services and facilities, with Caergwrle in particular having a well defined local centre. Public Questions There were no public questions received. 203. Chairman’s Announcements The Chairman welcomed back the Clerk and was happy to see she was fit and well. She wished to highlight & acknowledge recent community celebrations and events. She thanked Cllr Hilton and Sheibani for co-ordinating and hosting the Community Engagement Event and for the other members who also supported them. She had heard wonderful reports of various armistice celebrations, a great effort by all involved. There was also a lovely turn out for the Hope Church Christmas Light Switch On. All of the above demonstrates community spirit. The Masonic Hall in Caergwrle will also be hosting a Christmas Light Switch On, this Friday 7th December. The Chair has received an invitation from Graham Hughes, Castell Alun Head Teacher, to attend a meeting to open discussion and relations between the council and the school.
