Distance: approx 4 ½ miles, allow 2 ½ hrs. 1. We start at the Lych Gate of St. Mary's Church: why not have a look inside the church before your shoes get too muddy? There are usually leaflets about the history, stained glass windows and churchyard. Once you have had a look go back to the lych gate then head off towards the thatched cottage in St. Mary's Close. 2. Follow the path & keep to the right of a wooden garage before reaching the A33. Please be very careful crossing the dual carriageway here. On the far side go down the slope & follow an obvious path to Mill Lane. 3. To the left is Abbots Worthy House, once the home of Victorian Cabinet Minister Lord Eversley. This is very appropriate for us as he was a tireless campaigner for public access to open spaces and footpaths.     324 OLD ROADS IN CENTRAL HANTS BY C. F. C. HAWKES. Although many of the roads to be found in this country are of very great age, yet none of them are older than the earliest settlements. Villages and camps were not established, along the line of already existing roads, but roads grew up as links between settlements. Before the Saxon invasion all the villages were oh the uplands, and hence the roads followed the lines of the ridges from one to another. This was the best way for several reasons:—It was the driest, and generally avoided streams, and it lay over open ground; moreover, the safest route for travel . is always that with the widest view. But the principal reason was that the uplands were the centres of population. The oldest prehistoric roads are the long trade routes stretch- ing right across the country, which form the skeleton of the whole system: they keep, wherever possible, to the high ridge tops or just on the south brow, and where a ridge has to be crossed it is usually at a saddle with an easy gradient: for the crossing of a river valley, they generally descend by some spur with a gentle slope, and always choose a place as high up the river as possible, where the difficult wet valley is narrow. But later there grew up parallel roads beside them, which kept to the lower slopes of the ridges, and were used in dry summer weather, when travellers were not forced to get right to the crest of a ridge to find a passable road.

We are always delighted to see so many favourites return and excited to be introducing some new events too. Remember, each one is FREE to attend but some of the more popular events get booked up very fast, so you will need to be quick! We are immensely grateful to our lead sponsor, Winchester College, for supporting us again this year and look forward to welcoming you to all the wonderful events that they are so generously hosting for us. We would also like to extend a warm thank you to all our other sponsors, supporters and volunteers, including Hampshire County Council for allowing us the use of the Great Hall and the City of Winchester Trust and University of Winchester for their invaluable help. Nevertheless, we live in challenging times and whilst the festival continues to grow in popularity, so do its costs. With over 140 free events on offer this year, the festival is entirely run by an enthusiastic team of volunteers who all give up their time for free. Winchester Heritage Open Days is a community festival and we want it to remain so, but we receive no core funding and rely solely on grants and the generosity of local businesses, organisations and Carolyn Fairbairn and Peter Chittick individuals for financial support to keep the festival afloat.
