Vinyl 4 New Albums on Vinyl 34 From Analog Masters 54 Spring 20 17 60 ECM New Series ECM I New Albums on Vinyl Wolfgang Muthspiel Rising Grace Wolfgang Muthspiel guitar Wolfgang Muthspiel — whom The New Yorker has Ambrose Akinmusire trumpet called “a shining light” among today’s jazz guitarists — Brad Mehldau piano made his ECM leader debut in 2014 with the trio disc Larry Grenadier double bass Driftwood , featuring him alongside two longtime Brian Blade drums colleagues, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade. For his follow-up — Rising Grace — the Austrian guitarist has convened a very special quintet, adding jazz luminary Brad Mehldau on piano and the out- standing young trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire to the subtly virtuosic Grenadie r/Blade rhythm section. Muthspiel moves between electric guitar and classi - cally tinged acoustic six-string, his playing by turns grooving (“Boogaloo”) and enchanting (“Rising Grace”). The lyrical flights of Akinmusire’s trumpet and the probing improvisations of Mehldau run through Muthspiel’s rich set of compositions like golden threads, the tracks including a warm tribute to a late, great ECM artist, Kenny Wheeler (“Den Wheeler, Den Kenny”). 1 of 38 Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting… By, Rick Calic www.jazzrockworld.com March 2006 Writing an article about Jazz Rock Fusion these days might seem as pointless as debating the benefits of Hi-Fi equipment with vacuum tubes vs. transistors to someone that uses an iPod. The only people that would care are older folks who even remember tubes and dedicated enthusiasts. On the other hand, while Jazz Rock Fusion might be older or seem equally pointless to many reading this article, there remains a large but scattered segment of the world’s population that sees the genre as a vibrant and legitimate art form. Sadly though, the musical perspective regarding Jazz Rock Fusion was narrow from the beginning and will probably always be that way. Jazz Rock Fusion, in terms of the entire world of music, constitutes just a tiny fraction of interest. Yet, if we accept this as fact, which most fans, musicians and certainly “big business” does, the generation of any interest at all is meritorious. In order to discuss the music with integrity, a ground rule needs to be established. This ground rule is required due to the unsolved, long lasting, and ongoing mysteries of the music and its unique identity. Mysteries such as: What is Jazz Rock Fusion? Who started Jazz Rock Fusion? What should it be called? And finally, with no major media support why is there still a market? So, what are the answers you ask? Quite simply these mysteries will remain mysteries. Answering the questions definitively will end up as trivial as the facts regarding the creation and development of the gut bucket. -

The new violinist in Eick’s ensemble is Håkon Aase, one of the up-and-coming players of the new Norwegian scene, whom attentive ECM listeners will already know from his work with Thomas MATHIAS EICK Strønen’s group. The core Eick road band is further shored up by the addition of Helge Andreas Norbakken, who interacts excitingly with fellow drummer Torstein Lofthus. Eick is in great form as a writer on this show- RAVENSBURG ing, deploying driving rhythm at the bottom end of his music and soaring melody at the top in this series of pieces which add up to a kind of collective family portrait. STANLEY CLARKE CURRÍCULUM I DISCOGRAFIA www.stanleyclarke.com Nascut a Filadèlfia, Clarke es va traslladar a viure a Nova York després d’acabar els seus estudis com a baixista de formació clàssica a l’Acadèmia de Música de Filadèlfia. Ràpidament, va saber fer-se un lloc en l’escena del jazz de Nova York, tocant amb músics de la talla de Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans i al costat d’un jove compositor i pianista aleshores incipient anomenat Chick Corea. Tots aquests músics van reconèixer immediatament la gran destresa i musicalitat del jove Clarke amb el baix acústic. No només era expert composant, sinó que també funcionava com a controlador de temps al baix. Stanley també tenia un gran sentit de la lírica i de la melodia que va obtenir de la influència dels seus baixistes preferits Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro i del seu gran heroi musical, John Coltrane. Power of Three – Corea, Clarke & White Corea
POWER OF THREE ––– COREA, CLARKE & WHITE Following their celebrated reunion during last year’s triumphant Return to Forever tour, Chick Corea will join once again with his RTF bandmates Stanley Clarke and Lenny White for a worldwide trio tour, commencing with an all-star extravaganza at the Hollywood Bowl on September 2. For that special engagement, Corea, Clarke & White will be joined by original Return to Forever guitarist Bill Connors, appearing with his former RTF bandmates for the first time since 1974. Together they will reprise their dynamic chemistry from Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy , performing such early RTF material as “Space Circus,” “Captain Señor Mouse” and “Spain.” Corea, Clarke & White actually harkens back to a week-long engagement in 1973, when they performed as a trio at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco. (Little known fact: Connors sat in with the trio during that gig and was subsequently invited to join RTF when the band went electric). Says Corea of the new trio, “Now that we're playing together again, there's a flood of creativity and inspiration that could only come from making music with this group. Stanley, Lenny and I are looking forward to taking it back to the trio setting we had when we were putting the first electric version of RTF together. That week we did at the old Keystone Korner in '73 remains memorable for us and has become a starting point for the new musical explorations we’re planning.” Other special guests to appear at the Hollywood Bowl extravaganza are violinist Jean-Luc Ponty (a key collaborator on Corea’s 1976 classic My Spanish Heart , and with Clarke on 1995’s Rite of Strings ) and vocalist extraordinaire Chaka Khan (featured with Corea, Clarke, White, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on 1982’s Lenny White-produced Echoes of an Era ).
