SUPP's Peter Chin: I Will Not Respond to Challenges Or Allegations Bernama December 5 , 2011 SIBU, Dec 5 SUPP's Peter Chin: I Will Not Respond To Challenges Or Allegations Bernama December 5 , 2011 SIBU, Dec 5 (Bernama) -- Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) presidential hopeful Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui says he prefers not to respond to challenges or allegations against him in the run-up to the party's triennial delegates conference and presidential election this weekend in Kuching. "No...I will not respond as this can make the already muddled situation worse," he told Bernama when met at Sibu Airport while waiting for his flight to Miri. Another presidential hopeful, Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh, had yesterday alleged that Chin and SUPP treasurer-general Datuk David Teng Lung Chi had made anti- Barisan Nasional statements in their "ceramah" (public talks) in a number of places. Wong, who is state Minister of Local Government and Community Development, had then challenged them to say openly whether they had or had not done so, saying he had recordings of such speeches by them. "It is the norm in any political party presidential election for challenges, allegations and statements to be made. "I think at the end of the day, it is best for the 600 delegates to make the decision at the TDC," Chin said, adding that he and Wong were still friends. Chin who is Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, said he had driven all the way from Kuching yesterday to meet his supporters in Sri Aman, Debak, Saratok and last night in Sarikei. "I am taking a week off to focus on my party politics," he said, adding that he was happy with the "warm reception" given to him so far.     Passing of a Patriot: House pays tribute to Ghafar New Straits Times – 25/4/2006 mailto:[email protected] KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Abdul Ghafar Baba, the longest- serving elected representative the country has ever known, was given a rousing tribute on his home turf yesterday — the Dewan Rakyat. A day after his death, a motion of condolence was tabled in the House by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, seconded by his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak and supported by many members, all of whom heaped praise on a man who had been MP since the first federal legislative council elections in 1955. Those who spoke included Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang and Pas Youth chief Salehuddin Ayob. The motion was unanimously approved. The Dewan Rakyat also observed a minute’s silence when it began proceedings yesterday. Abdullah said Malaysia had lost a national hero who had contributed immensely to the nation’s development. "He was a mature leader, constantly voicing his concerns and views, especially on religious, racial and cultural issues." For a Malay who came from a Malay village, he was broad- minded and could relate to anyone of all races and religions, Abdullah said. Ghafar, 81, died of heart, lung and kidney complications at the Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre in Jalan Ampang on Sunday. Abdullah said Ghafar’s loyalty was to his struggle for the people, and he had always been consistent in serving the country, whether holding a position in the Government or party, or as an ordinary member without a post. He said Ghafar’s qualities deserved emulation.

The news was also received positively by leaders from Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, with many of them expressing confidence that the Najib-Muhyiddin synergy would continue to bring positive vibes not only to BN, but also the country, as a whole. "It was a wise decision by Umno grassroots to return both leaders unopposed. I believe it will further strengthen the stability in the party," he told Bernama when contacted. Introduction This paper describes and analyses the process of policy formation in Malaysia, focussing on CRISE’s particular areas of concern. As an introductory comment, it is important to note the criteria behind Malaysia’s inclusion as a CRISE case study and the implications they carry for this document. Malaysia is widely accepted as a country which has been remarkably – perhaps uniquely – successful in managing and containing ethnic conflict in a post-colonial context against expectations. In comparing the records of Malaysia and Ceylon/Sri Lanka, for instance, Donald Horowitz (1989), argues that during decolonisation, expectations were that Ceylon would remain peaceful, whilst Malaysia risked extensive conflict. The reverse has proved to be the case. Without prejudging the conclusions of CRISE’s work, it seems clear that much of Malaysia’s success has been due to its ethnic redistributive policies, which have gone a long way towards redressing the gross economic inequalities left by the colonial period whilst being accompanied by high growth rates for a sustained period of decades. Whilst pertinent questions remain about the political practices of the regime and, perhaps, the level of political inequality in the country, the inclusion of Malaysia in the research project was very much on the grounds of it being a ‘good’ case study, from which to learn both the advantages and pitfalls of ethnic redistribution.
