To TS catalogue comprises all that has been published by the Government of Tasmania respecting the economic mining, geology, and mineralogy of the State up to the 31st December, 1914. Many of the pUblications are now out of print, but can be consulted in the Journals of Parliament. In each case the nature of the publication, whether a Parliamentary Paper, a Mines Department Report, a Geological Survey Bulletin, &c., has been stated so as to facilitate reference. Further information may be obtained on application to either the Secretary for Mines or the Geological Survey. Many enquiries are received by the Geological Survey with respect to reports and other publications included in the catalogue, and it is hoped that this issue will satisfy requirements in that directioll_ W. These units are host to a number of large VHMS deposits in the nearby area, including Rosebery Pb-Zn, Hellyer Zn-Pb-Ag-Au and the large copper deposits of the Mount Lyell field. The licence area has been the site of historical copper mining in the 1890’s to early 1900’s. Concerted modern exploration for base metal VHMS deposits has continued since the 1950’s. Following review of historical and 2 aeromagnetic data 51 kmP P has been identified as non-prospective and marked for release. 2 Introduction The Selina Exploration Licence 29/2002, a 24 km long by 5 km wide belt, is located in Western Tasmania, between Queenstown to the south and Rosebery to the north. Groundwaters in wet, temperate, mountainous, sulphide-mining districts: delineation of modern fluid flow and predictive modelling for mine closure (Rosebery, Tasmania). by Lee R. Three co-authored conference publications written as part of the present study (Evans et al., 2003; Evans et al., 2004a; and Evans et al., 2004b) are provided in Appendix Sixteen. Lee R. Evans Date: This thesis is to be made available for loan or copying in accordance with the Copyright Act 1969 from the date this statement was signed. Lee R. Evans Date: ii Abstract There are as yet few studies of the hydrogeology of sulphide-mining districts in wet, temperate, mountainous areas of the world. This is despite the importance of understanding the influence of hydrogeology on the evolution and management of environmental issues such as acid mine drainage (AMD). There is a need to determine whether the special climatic and geological features of such districts result in distinct groundwater behaviours and compositions which need to be considered in mining impact studies.

Googk A CATALOGUE OF THE MINERALS KNOWN TO OCCUR IN TASMANIA, WITH NOTES ON THEIR DISTRIBUTION• .Bv W. F. PETTERD. THE following Catalogue of the Minerals known to occur and reeortled from this Island is mainly prepared from specimen~ contained in my own collection, and in the majority of instances I have verified the identifications by careful qualitative analysis. It cannot claim any originality of research, 01' even accluac)" of detail, but as the material has been so rapidly accumulating during the past few )'ears I bave thoug-ht it well to place on record the result of my personal observation and collecting, wbich, with information ~Ieaned from authentic sources, may, I trust, at least pave tbe way for a more elaborate compilation by a more capable authority. I have purposely curtailed my remarks on the various species 80 Rs to make them as concise as possible, and to redulle the bulk of the matter. As an amateur I think I may fairly claim tbe indulgence of the professional or otber critics, for I feel sure tbat my task has been very inadequately performed in pro portion to the importance of the subjeot-one not only fraugbt with a deep scientific interest on account of tbe multitude of questions arisin~ from the occurrence and deposition of the minerals them selves, but also from the great economic results of our growing mining indu.try. My object has been more to give some inform ation on tbis subject to the general student of nature,-to point out tbe larg-e and varied field of observation open to him,- than to instruct the more advanced mineralo~ist.

Twblvetrees, F.G.S., and W. F. Petterd, C.M.Z.S. The following Notes lay no claim to be an exhaustive description of our familiar '• diabase" or "dolerite" rock, which plays such an important part in the geology and physical configuration of our Island. The present object is rather to place upon record some inferences drawn from the examination of numerous microscopical sections of speci- mens collected or received from all parts of Tasmania. It is by accumulating the results of observations that stepping stones are formed to more complete knowledge. A glance at Mr. R. M. Johnston's geological map of Tasmania, issued by the Lands Office, will show the share this rock takes in the structure of the Island. It occupies the whole upland area of the Central Tiers. On the northern face of the Tiers—the Western Tiers as they are here called—there is a tongue of the rock prolonged northwards past IMount Claude. At their north-west corner it forms or caps mountains, such as Cradle Mountain (the highest in Tas- mania), Barn Bluff, Mount Pelion West. Eldon Blufi: forms a narrow western extension. Mount Sedgwick is a western out-lier ; Mount Dundas another. In that part of the island it is also found at Mount Heemskirk Falls, and on the Magnet Range, two miles north of the Magnet Mine. Mounts Gell and Hugel are also western out-liers.

189 LAND ROUTES FOR EXPLORATION OF THE WESTERN COUNTRY. By T. Stephens, M.A., F.G.S. Read at a Meeting of the Royal Society of Tasmania, 10th August, 1896. As in the legendary tales of old, and the true histories of modern times, the heroes of exploration and adventure turn their faces to the setting sun ; so those who seek to develop the comparatively little known mineral resources of Tasmania are turning to the West as to a Promised Land, and the time seems Opportune for bringing under the notice of the Royal Society a subject in which the whole community is interested, whether it be regarded from an economic or a scientific point of view. An irregular line drawn from Port Sorell in a southerly direction, between the 146th and 147th meridians, by the head waters of the River Mersey and the ranges west of Lake St. Clair, and along the western slopes of the King William Range and the Hartz Mountains to South Cape, divides Tasmania into two portions of nearly equal area, but unlike in all other respects. In the eastern half, except for a fringe of settlement along the North- West Coast, are all the agricultural and pastoral lands and chief centres of popula- tion ; in the western half, the general physical conditions are unsuitable for farming or stock raising, and, with the exception just noted, the population consists exclusively of those who are engaged more or less directly in exploiting such of its mineral wealth as has come under the prospector's notice. In the Western Country the enterprising pioneer or pros- pector is free from the risk of encountering some of the perils immemorially associated iu fable or in fact with the exploration of strange lands.

MAP To Illustrate Paper on DISCOVERY OF CLACIATION T£ Moore FHfrli 147 DISCOVERY OF GLA.CIATION IN THE VICINITY OF MOUNT TYNDALL, IN TASMANIA. By T. B. Moore, F.R.G.S. (Map.) A most important and extremely interesting discovery of glaciation was made by Mr. E. J. Dunn, F.G.S., of Victoria, in the first week of October, 1892, on the high plateau in the vicinity of Lake Dora, Tasmania. Having been with Mr. Dunn at the time of his discovery, and as it was his intention to write on the subject, I now wish to record in the proceedings of our Royal Society the result of a more extended search made by me on the high peaks and surrounding tableland, and illustrate the most important features of the glacial action on the accompanying sketch map compiled from prismatic compass bearings. The Tyndall Range and Mount Sedgwick have been the principal seats of the prehistoric glaciers ; respectively these mountains are about thirteen (13) and nineteen (19) miles in a direct line from the town of Zeehan, and twenty-two (22) and nineteen (19) miles from the port of Strahan. They rise 1,500ft. to 1,600ft. above an elevated plateau, on which are situated Lake Dora and numerous other lakes and tarns at an altitude of 2,400ft. above the sea level. The plateau is drained on the north by the Anthony River, a tributary of the River Pieman, on the west by the Henty River and its tributaries, and on the east and south by the head branches of the King River.
