For example, C.S. Lewis was able to describe fiiendship in terms that relate to our desire to have intimate connections with people. Jane Austen could display the development of a romance in such a way that many readers have wished a story like one of hers could be real in their own lives. Personally, seeing how nature is perceived by writers has always been special to me. Aspects of nature like weeping willows, Queen Anne's lace, the Rocky Mountains, stargazer lilies, and the Great Barrier Reef have a distinct kind of beauty; sometimes poets are able to put that loveliness into words when I find myself speechless. Ever since high school, I have been captivated by the poems of William Wordsworth, who has been deemed the quintessential"poet ofNature" by many. Other memorable writers whose perspectives on nature have impacted the world include Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, John Keats, and John Muir. Each of these individuals brings his unique view to the table, and I find myself overwhelmed by the depth in their words have in their poems, books, and essays. For this paper, I will be looking at several topics. I plan to view Wordsworth's early life and several of his poems that were influenced by his view of nature. Next, I will examine Emerson's essay "Natw-e", Thoreau's classic work Walden, John Keats's poems that relate to the subject, and John Muir's writings on his travels in the Western United States. I will then look at different passages of Scripture that speak about nature and creation; I plan on using my findings in the Bible as a standard to determine whose view of the natural world is most accurate. 1 Wordsworth's View William Wordsworth had a close connection with nature, even from childhood. He grew up mostly in the Lake District of England, and his childhood home was next to the River Derwent. Later in life, he stated that he was grateful for its "murmuring'' and the "steady cadence" it had given him when he was yotmg: "stillness and an openness to receive were the basic slate of Wordsworth's being" (Woof, "The Wordsworths and the Cult of Nature"). His autobiographical poem The Prelude features many sensations he experienced during his schooldays as a young boy. While he was still a small child, his mother died, greatly affecting him. He "took for himself some birds that others had snared" (Woof) and "heard among the solitary hills/Low breathings coming after me... " [Wordsworth, The Prelude (from Selected Poetry of William Wordsworth), Book I, 11. 322-3]. Through those words, he expressed the fear felt by a child and the sensation that "he [had] angered unknown powers in Nature that [were] real and far bigger than he [was]" (Woof). Yet, he also experienced a sense of beauty while engaging with Nature; he would go on horseback rides with classmates from his school at Hawkshead and look around the ruins of Furness Abbey. Wordsworth believed that he had been given a glimpse of the eternal and that "Nature had let him 'drink' a 'visionary power"'; Woof also states that "through Nature he could apprehend the spiritual beyond the immediacy of the materiaL" Like his friend Samuel Taylor Coleridge and others in their circle, Wordsworth got caught up in the chaotic events leading to the French Revolution throughout the 1790s and early 1800s, having visited France multiple times from 1790-1792 (Davies, William Wordsworth, 42, 45). He had hoped that a better govenunent would come to France - 2 Yet in the regal sceptre, and the pomp Of orders and degrees, I nothing found Then, or had ever, even in crudest youth, That dazzled me, but rather what I mourned And ill could brook, beholding that the best Ruled not, and feeling that they ought to rule (The Prelude, Book IX, 11. 209-14) - but was disappointed when everything turned into a bloodbath: "Domestic carnage now filled the whole year/With feast days ... /Head after head, and never heads enough/For those that bade them fall" (Book X, II. 356-7, 362-3). During this time, he began to see Natw-e "not only in tetms of the relationship between himself and the natw-al world, but also as intimately linked with the problems of society" (Woof). Earlier in Wordsworth's literary career, he had become good friends with fellow poet Coleridge. They took a few trips throughout Europe together dming the course of their friendship. Sometimes it was just the two of them, but other times they took traveling companions along, like Wordsworth's only sister, Dorothy. One of their treks was to Germany in 1798; while Coleridge enjoyed himself in Ratzeburg, Wordsworth found his experience in the countryside dismal and disappointing (Davies, 96, 99). Despite the unpleasant conditions-near poverty, lackluster surroundings, loneliness, etc.-he wrote poems that reminded him ofhis life in England. Some of the best-known works produced during this time included the Lucy poems, "Nutting," and the beginning of The Prelude (99-1 0 t ). Later, he, Coleridge, and Dorothy went on a journey to Scotland in 1803 (152, 154). Wordsworth found this trip more pleasurable, encountering more beautiful scenery in Scotland than he had viewed during his previous excursion in Germany. This trip invigorated him, giving him inspiration for his poems for many years and serving as one of the last occasions on which he felt a truly magical connection to nature. 3 In "Lines Compose~ a Few Miles above Tintem Abbey," Wordsworth proclaimed that he was a worshipper of Nature. Whether he meant this literally or not, he seemed to display pantheistic tendencies in his early years. I strongly believe that he had a great respect for the natural world which may have gone overboard at times. Wordsworth felt a deep pull from Nature and marveled how the rest of the world could disregard the simple beauty everywhere in his poem "The World Is Too Much with Us," written in 1802. He expresses frustration early on when he writes, "Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:/Little we see in Nature that is ours;/We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon" (11. 2A). Everywhere he looks, he notices that everyone else is focused on making money and obtaining the things they want rather than stopping to notice the grandeur of the outside world. Material wealth is the goal of people's affections instead ofthe wealth to be found in nature. He becomes exasperated to the point that "[he'd] rather be/A Pagan suckled in a creed outwom" (11. 9, 10) than be part of a world that does not appreciate Natw-e. His lifetime was enveloped by the Age of Sail, a period lasting approximately from 1571-1862 in which most international industries depended on the sea to conduct trade with neighboring countries. Merchants and consumers looked at the ocean and saw only business profits. However, I would argue that Wordsworth wished they would appreciate the sea for its own inherent beauty and not just the potential to make money. His pantheistic leanings, referenced above, are on display in the last two lines of the poem: "Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;/Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed hom" (II. 13-14). Another work that displays his strong attachment to the natural world is his 1799 poem, "Nutting." One day, he journeyed into the woods and discovered hazelnut trees which had produced a bountiful yield. He became momentarily distracted by all the beauty that surrounded 4 him and ended up playing with flowers and listening to the munnurings of a brook. Having remembered why he was there, he sprang up and broke branches off the trees in a burst of exuberance to obtain the nuts growing on them. Then up I rose, And dragged to earth both branch and bough, with crash And merciless ravage; and the shady nook Of hazels, and the green and mossy bower, Defonned and sullied, patiently gave up Their quiet being (11. 43-48). He immediately regretted his actions, reminiscing that "I felt a sense of pain when I beheld/The silent trees, and saw the intruding sky-/..

Muntasir Mamun University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Bangladesh Abstract The seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries experienced major educational movements, including orthodox religious formalism and rationalistic formalism of the Enlightenment. Toward the end of the latter century, however, naturalist and individualist views of education began to counter formalism, inspired by poets and philosophers like William Wordsworth and Jean Jacques Rousseau. This article focuses on Wordsworth's poetry to show how his philosophy of moral and spiritual development of the individual helped to establish faith in Nature as a basis of moral guidance of education. Wordsworth believed that education is a process of natural growth of the student, and the teacher, like a gardener, should be a watchful guide on the side, not a sage on the stage. The child, engaged in real life situations and exposed to good role models, comes to understand the need for sharing, kindness, honesty, diligence, loyalty, courage, and other virtues. The article concludes by showing the value of the above philosophy for our time. In the 21st century, the business world of global capitalism threatens to reduce humanity to mere products or commodities and knowledge has become a mere market entity. Under these circumstances, William naturalistic philosophy of education can strengthen education against the capitalist threat.     AP ACHIEVER Romanticism Romanticism dominated literature, music, and the arts in the first half of the 19th century. Romantics reacted to the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason and science, instead stressing the following: • Emotions – Taking their cue from Rousseau, Romantics emphasized feeling and passion as the wellspring of knowledge and creativity. • Intuition – Science alone cannot decipher the world; imagination and the “mind’s eye” can also reveal its truths. • Nature – Whereas the philosophes studied nature analytically, the Romantics drew inspiration and awe from its mysteries and power. • Nationalism – Romanticism found a natural connection with nationalism; both emphasized change, passion, and connection to the past. • Religion (Supernatural) – Romanticism coincided with a religious revival, particularly in Catholicism. A. Speck’s Robert Southey: Entire Man of Letters (2006), a new five‐volume edition of Southey’s Poetical Works, 1793‐1810 (2004), a volume of essays edited by Lynda Pratt entitled Robert Southey and the Contexts of English Romanticism (2006), Carol Bolton’s study Writing the Empire: Robert Southey and Romantic Colonialism (2007) and David M. Craig’s book Robert Southey and Romantic Apostasy: Political Argument in Britain, 1780‐1840 (2007). Furthermore, the first collected edition of Southey’s vast correspondence, co‐directed by Lynda Pratt and Tim Fulford, is under way. After a long period of neglect, a concerted effort is being made to reassess Southey’s work, rehabilitate it, analyse the development of his political and social ideas and recognise his centrality to British literature and culture in the Romantic age.     ©© TIM BURKE Lord Lonsdale and His Proteges: William Wordsworth and John Hardie THIS ESSAY IS CONCERNED with two poets working in the service of Sir William Lowther, second Earl of Lonsdale, both actively advancing his considerable inter­ ests in the politics of northwest England in the 1830s. One of the poets is, of course, William Wordsworth, who had been in the "pay" of Lonsdale since 1813. The other seems to have received nothing by way of financial or indeed any other kind of direct support from the earl, but nonetheless belongs sufficiently within the Lowther family's extensive sphere of influence to be described as a protege of sorts.1 His name is John Hardie (bom c. 1782), a cabinetmaker and author of occasional poetry that was collected in a volume published at Whitehaven, thirty miles to the west of Rydal Mount, in 1839.2 Both men wrote poems promoting Lord Lonsdale and endorsing the wider "Lowther interest," with a particular emphasis on the earl as an embodiment of "truth" and the ideal of aristocratic and paternalist masculinity In so doing, Lonsdale's poets were trying to counter his very different representation in the hostile radical and reformist press; his polit­ ical vulnerability after the passage of the reform bills that he had so aggressively opposed was an opportunity for radical opponents to question his honesty and even his noble masculine identity. Lonsdale was a sometimes shrewd, sometimes far from subtle manipulator of the local press in the Lake Counties. His quest for influence dates back at least as far as 1818, and the election of that year, in which Henry Brougham first stood against the Lowther interest, challenging the complacent assumption that the earl's sons would be elected unopposed.

Historically the subject has been said to link ideas of inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual,1 but all of these terms are awkward and at best outmoded.2 ‘Romantic poetry’ was first defined by Friedrich Schlegel in 1798. The subject for the study of painting was considerably extended by the ideas of the philosopher G.W.F. Hegel in his lectures on ‘Aesthetics’, 1818-29, in which he includes a substantial section ‘Romantic Art’.3 Ideas of subjectivity and the individual are prevalent in the work and throughout the idea of inspiration is implicit. There is also the debate in Hegel and others regarding the idea that ‘Romantic Art’ displaces ‘Classic Art’.4 In the late 1980s August Wiedmann, a philosopher and art historian wrote an analysis of the subject.5 He identified four important traits of Romantic Art and named them, ‘Holistic’, ‘Expressive’, ‘Hierophanic Conception’ and ‘Organic’. It may prove viable to begin by making use of what lies beneath these terms when considering some of the landscape painting made in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The idea of the ‘Holistic’, of ‘All’ and ‘everything’ appears in the work of a number of poets.
