The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). Jones: Goodnight Saigon GOODNIGHT SAIGON: BILLY JOEL’S MUSICAL EPITAPH TO THE VIETNAM WAR Morgan Jones* Billy Joel adopted new personae and took on new roles in several songs on both 1982’s The Nylon Curtain1 and his penultimate studio album to date, 1989’s Storm Front.2 In what some have seen as an attempt to reach a more adult audience, to “move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect,”3 Joel put on new hats (literally, at times: his fedora-wearing balladeer appears prominently in the video for “Allentown”) for “Allentown” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’,” “Pressure” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Goodnight Saigon” and “Leningrad.”4 Each of these pairs of songs saw Joel endeavoring to make statements about issues that were bigger than he and his own life, which was in stark contrast to his sources of inspiration for his earlier, more self-centered albums.

  • The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies
THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO REMIX STUDIES The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. Eduardo Navas is the author of Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling (Springer, 2012). He researches and teaches principles of cultural analytics and digital humanities in the School of Visual Arts at The Pennsylvania State University, PA. Navas is a 2010–12 Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway, and received his PhD from the Program of Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Owen Gallagher received his PhD in Visual Culture from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. He is the founder of TotalRecut.com, an online com- munity archive of remix videos, and a co-founder of the Remix Theory & Praxis seminar group.

equine emergencyrescue A horse owner’s guide to Large Animal Rescue MaryAnne Leighton & Michelle Staples “This book could save your horse’s life!” Every horse, no matter how quiet or well educated, has the potential to become involved in an emergency incident and need to be rescued. If your horse has gone down in his float, is trapped in mud, fire or floodwater, or has fallen into a ditch, sinkhole, septic tank or swimming pool, you need the information contained in this book. Equine Emergency Rescue is the first book to address the subject of technical large animal emergency rescue in a way that makes sense to horse owners and that is specifically designed to help emergency responders rescue your horse safely, even if they are not trained in these techniques. Rescuing trapped horses is incredibly dangerous because horses are immensely strong and unpredictable and can kick with accuracy and killing force within a third of a second. This is why you and emergency responders must always treat a trapped horse as if it were a Hazardous Material – a dangerous object that will explode without warning. Equine Emergency Rescue is a must-have guide for horse owners, emergency responders and equine and large animal vets. The information it contains could help save your horse’s life. ‘Every horse owner needs the information in this book for their own safety and that of their horse. When you have to call fire/rescue/police you need to know how to help them – this book shows you how.’ Dr Rebecca Gimenez, Primary Instructor/President, Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue, USA ‘… this book is a valuable resource for anyone involved in a Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue.
