visitsumnertn.com 3 Mary Elizabeth McAuley had a magical, memorable smile that touched the hearts and lives of everyone she met. While a diagnosis of cerebral palsy and epilepsy left Mary unable to verbally communicate, it was clear that Mary loved having fun as much as any other child. However, there were no local playgrounds available that accommodated Mary’s wheelchair.

After Mary passed away on September 2, 2015, at 14 years old, it was decided there needed to be a place to honor Mary’s legacy and magical smile, a place where people of all ability levels could play. It was then that Mary’s Magical Place was born. After 3 years of fundraising, Mary’s Magical Place, the area’s first all-inclusive playground, opened to the public in September 2018. Everyone of any ability level and any age is welcome to play!

Visit Mary’s Magical Place year-round at 148 Scotch St., Hendersonville, TN 37075 next to Veteran’s Park. Learn more about Mary’s Magical Place online at MarysMagicalPlace.org.

26 BLUEGRASS MUSIC IN SUMNER COUNTY

Bluegrass music is a staple of the South and here in Sumner County, Tennessee, we love a good bluegrass jam! Major bluegrass musicians have called Sumner County home, includ- ing Jim & Jesse McReynolds, the dynamic bluegrass duo made up of two brothers from Virginia who settled in Gallatin, Tennessee, in the 1960s. Although Jim passed away in 2002, Jesse is still an active musician and member of the Grand Ole Opry, which he still pops into occasionally to play a show even at 90 years old! Jesse’s even been known to play special events around Gallatin and it’s always magic to hear Jesse on his mandolin! Keep up with Jesse on his website jimandjesse.com!

Another bluegrass gathering ground in Sumner County is Long Hollow Jamboree, where in the past the faces of Bill Monroe, Roy Acuff, Grandpa Jones, and Bill Carlisle could be seen during surprise sets! Folks can still visit Long Hollow Jamboree to dine on their down-home lunches in the famous Tennessee meat-and-three style, and on select evenings patrons line up to enjoy the Jamboree’s live country and bluegrass music along with old-fashioned dancing (cover charged on Jamboree live music nights). Long Hollow Jamboree is always family-friendly and all ages are welcome. Find them at 3600 Long Hollow Pike, Goodlettsville, or give them at a call at (615) 824-4445.

Two fun family-friendly bluegrass events in Sumner County are the Folk ‘n Bluegrass Festival at Historic Rock Castle and the Backyard Bluegrass Bash at the Douglass-Clark House. Bluegrass fans should put these great events on their calendars as they are not to be missed!
