The papers were given to the Tennessee Historical Society by G. William Wynne, Springfield, Massachusetts, through the agency of Walter T. Durham, Gallatin, Tennessee. The materials in this collection measure 10.08 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the George Winchester Wynne Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. We grieved, as a community, the loss of our great leader, President Bill Armstrong. And, on October 1st, we welcomed a new president at the helm of our beloved university. As always, it is our goal to keep you informed about and also proud to be associated with Colorado Christian University. In this edition of BEYOND, you will see some of the ways CCU is engaging with the broader community through public policy and political science; some of the wonderful events and various programs going on; and you’ll learn about the man whom the board of trustees unanimously voted to be our next president. As we move forward into a new era at CCU, we do so trusting always in the grace and sovereignty of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are excited to introduce you to CCU’s new president, Dr. Donald Sweeting. You can read more about him on page 10, but I’d like to share with you my perspective on the man God has appointed to this position. After a decade under the guidance and leadership of President Bill Armstrong, this University needs a president who stands boldly for the convictions and values that CCU holds. Dr. Sweeting does just that. And, having served on CCU’s board of trustees for 11 years, Dr. Don Sweeting has an inside understanding of the University’s Statement of Faith, Strategic Objectives, mission and vision statements, and our pursuit to become a great university.

    Birds of Bledsoe Creek State Park Bledsoe Creek is a small park located in the state’s Central Basin on the shore of impounded Bledsoe Creek, a tributary of Old Hickory Lake. The park offers camping, fishing, hiking, and interpretation of Middle Tennessee history. Over four and a half miles of trails take visitors from the lakeshore to a high ridgetop. From these locations a variety of birds ranging from waders and wintering waterfowl to transient and nesting songbirds may be observed. One hundred and sixteen species have been recorded at the park. Responsible Birding - Do not endanger the welfare of birds. - Tread lightly and respect bird habitat. - Silence is golden. - Do not use electronic sound devices to attract birds during nesting season, May-July. - Take extra care when in a nesting area. - Always respect the law and the rights of others, violators subject to prosecution. - Do not trespass on private property. - Avoid pointing your binoculars at other people or their homes. - Limit group sizes in areas that are not conducive to large crowds. The materials in this collection measure 1.68 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the James Winchester Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research. SCOPE AND CONTENT The papers of General James Winchester, numbering approximately 1,100 items and two volumes, contain accounts (bills, notes, receipts), personal and military; correspondence; land records including claims, records, deeds, grants, papers dealing with Memphis land surveys and commissions, court minutes, summonses, etc. Correspondence, mainly James Winchester’s incoming (1793-1825) and outgoing (1796-1826), comprises about half the collection. In addition to the military correspondence, a great portion deals with land speculation. The largest number of letters from any one man to Winchester is that of Judge John Overton, who, apart from being Winchester’s confidant and friend, was his partner in land dealings. There are 116 pieces of correspondence with Overton, and these are primarily on the subject of Memphis lands as Winchester, Overton, and Andrew Jackson were extensively involved in the establishment and early growth of the community.
