For #MeToo legal duo, a pandemic year brings no pause By Jocelyn Noveck Associated Press She’d just upended her life by going public with sexual harassment allegations against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. And Charlotte Ben- nett, a former aide to the governor, realized that Saturday night in February that she had no plan for what came next. She was 25 years old, and had never been in the media spotlight. How would she deal with the fallout, both publicly and personal- ly? She didn’t have long to wonder. The next morning, an email arrived from Debra Katz, the same civil rights attorney who’d represented Christine Blasey Ford, accuser of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, along with accusers of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein and count- less other powerful men accused of sexual mis- conduct, most of it along with her professional partner of 20 years, Lisa Banks. “How are you holding up?” Katz asked Ben- nett when they connected. Did she have support or advice? Not really, Bennett said. “This case is literally why I do this work,” Katz explained, assuring her she’d represent her on a pro bono basis. “It’s why I exist. Let’s do this.” For many people, the pandemic year has brought a pause of some kind, or at least a slow- down, to their professional endeavors. For Katz and Banks, the opposite has been true. “This is probably the biggest year we’ve ever had,” says Banks. Their work has actually been increasing for nearly four years. And the funds have yet to start flowing. Just to recap: In April, the state Legislature created a $2.7 billion program that can pay back up to 15 months of rent debt in full as part of the state budget. The application portal finally opened on June 1. In the first month, nearly 120,000 tenants ap- plied for aid, including more than 91,000 house- holds in New York City. But the state hasn’t dis- tributed any money yet to applicants in need. While the rollout has been slow, the funds will start going out “in the coming weeks,” said a spokesperson from the state’s Office of Tempo- rary and Disability Assistance, which is adminis- tering the program. Here’s what you need to know about the state of rent relief, the risk of eviction and how you or someone you know can get help applying: Is it too late to apply for rent relief? No! If you or people you know haven’t ap- plied for New York’s emergency assistance pro- gram, there’s still time. The first-come, first-served program doesn’t have an application deadline. You can qualify if your household income is less than 80% of the Area Median Income (which is $95,450 for a family of four), if you’ve experi- enced some kind of financial hardship because of the pandemic or if you’re behind on your rent for some time after March 2020.
