Genre and Empire: Historical Romance and Sixteenth-Century Chinese Cultural Fantasies Abstract Chinese historical romance blossomed and matured in the sixteenth century when the Ming empire was increasingly vulnerable at its borders and its people increasingly curious about exotic cultures. The project analyzes three types of historical romances, i.e., military romances Romance of Northern Song and Romance of the Yang Family Generals on northern Song's campaigns with the Khitans, magic-travel romance Journey to the West about Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India, and a hybrid romance Eunuch Sanbao's Voyages on the Indian Ocean relating to Zheng He's maritime journeys and Japanese piracy. The project focuses on the trope of exogamous desire of foreign princesses and undomestic women to marry Chinese and social elite men, and the trope of cannibalism to discuss how the expansionist and fluid imagined community created by the fiction shared between the narrator and the reader convey sentiments of proto-nationalism, imperialism, and pleasure. -

Visit to the Palace Museum, Beijing, April 2014, a Handling Session in the Study Room In April 2014 I visited the Palace Museum in Beijing with a group of colleagues after the spring series of auctions in Hong Kong. April is a good month to visit Beijing, as the weather is mild and if one is fortunate, the magnolia trees and peonies are just starting to flower. On this occasion, we were fortunate to be with some of our colleagues from Hong Kong, one of which had very good contacts with the curatorial staff at the Museum. This allowed us access to parts of the Palace that the general public are not able to visit, such as the Lodge of Fresh Fragrance, where the emperor Qianlong would hold imperial family banquets and on New Year’s Day would accept congratulations from officials and would invite them to watch operas. (Fig 2. and 3.). It is now used as VIP reception rooms for the Museum. However, the real highlight of the visit was the handling session that we were invited to attend in the study room. All the pieces that we handled were generally of the finest quality, but had sustained some damage, which made their Fig 1. Side Entrance to the Palace Museum. handling less of a worrying exercise. This week’s article is a little unusual in that it is a written record of this handling session. By its very nature, handling pieces is a very visual and tactile experience and can be difficult to convey in words, but I will endeavour to give a sense of this and provide comparisons where applicable. -

Spring 2015 | Vol. 51, No. 1 New CHSA exhibition to explore racial myths of 1915 Panama-Pacifi c International Expo n commemoration of the 100th Ianniversary of the Panama-Pacifi c International Exhibition (PPIE), the Chinese Historical Society of America will present the new exhibition “Underground Chinatown,” a penetrating look back at a troubling aspect of PPIE, also known as the 1915 San Francisco World’s Fair. Th e exhibition focuses on a popular attraction in the 1915 Fair’s “Joy Zone” that fascinated visitors with false portrayals of the Chinese community. With this presentation, CHSA explores persistent Graphic by Gordon Chun & Veronica Sese racial myths and stereotypes and their complex impact on our community. Th e exhibition will open April , at the Chinese Historical Society of America Museum. “Underground Chinatown” depicts a veiled view of an opium den, presented as a mix of myth and reality, an ambiguous portrayal of American Chinatown. CHSA’s Learning Center will be transformed into a scenic environment with backdrops of opium den imagery, prop furniture and real opium-smoking paraphernalia. Th e scene will be viewed by visitors from the other side of a scrim wall. Text on the scrim will present commentary from various perspectives about “Underground Photo courtesy Anne T. SUMMARY In response to requests from interested parties, the Department of Commerce (Commerce) is conducting an administrative review and a new shipper review of the antidumping duty (AD) order on multilayered wood flooring (wood flooring) from the People’s Republic of China (China) for the period of review (POR) December 1, 2017 through November 30, 2018. This administrative review was initiated on 99 companies, including two mandatory respondents, the Fusong Jinlong Group (Jinlong),1 and Jiangsu Guyu International Trade Co., Ltd. (Guyu), and the new shipper review covers Muchsee Wood (Chuzhou) Co., Ltd. (Muchsee Wood). We preliminarily determine that sales of subject merchandise by Jinlong and Guyu have not been made at prices below normal value (NV). We also preliminarily determine that sales of subject merchandise by Muchsee Wood have not been made at prices below NV. In addition, we preliminarily determine that 21 companies had no shipments to the United States during the POR, and that the Jinlong Group, Guyu, Muchsee Wood, and 54 companies are eligible for a separate rate. Finally, we are rescinding the administrative review with respect to Jilin Forest Industry Jinqiao Flooring Group Co., Ltd. -

The Social History of Alcohol and Drugs 20 (2005): 66-104. Opiate Addiction and the Entanglements of Imperialism and Patriarchy in Manchukuo, 1932-45 Norman Smith Abstract. In the Japanese colonial state of Manchukuo, opiate addiction was condemned by officials and critics alike. But the state-sponsored creation of a monopoly, opium laws, and rehabilitation programs failed to reduce rates of addiction. Further, official media condemnation of opiate addiction melded with local Chinese-language literature to stigmatise addiction, casting a nega- tive light over the state’s failure to realise its own anti-opiate agenda. Chinese writers were thus transfixed in a complex colonial environment in which they applauded measures to reduce harm to the local population while levelling critiques of Japanese colonial rule. This paper demonstrates how the Chinese- language literature of Manchukuo did not simply parrot official policies. It also delegitimised Japanese rule through opiate narratives that are gendered, consistently negative, and more critical of the state than might be expected in a colonial literature. …This sacrifice is truly terrifying You’ve turned your life’s blood to mud The price is far too high. The Last Emperor: The Journey of Finding Identity Chan Lam Kay The Last Emperor (1987), directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, was a classic epic movie which was the big winner of the 60th Academy Awards and the 45th Golden Globe Awards. Over the decades, the cinematography of the film has been thoroughly analyzed by critics. However, the identity of Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty as well as the main character in the film, is more intriguing and fascinating to me. According to Stuart Hall (1990), cultural identity is “not an essence, but a positioning”. Meanwhile, the issue of searching for identities has been a focus and widely discussed in the recent decade in Hong Kong. In a sense, this film resonates with the floating identity of Hong Kong, especially the emotion and the destiny of Hong Kong people in such chaotic times throughout history, despite the fact that the whole story and production is not related to Hong Kong at all. Therefore, this article will mainly focus on the journey of searching for identity in Puyi as represented in the film, with reference to Hall’s and Jonathan Rutherford’s discussion on the politics of identity. When compared with the television version (218 minutes), the theatre version (163 minutes) is more precise and consistent and thus is chosen to be discussed in this article. While the story happened in China, the film itself was actually international production in terms of directing, screenwriting, casting and shooting. The original score was composed and arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto (Japanese), David Byrne (British-American) and Cong Su (Chinese) who had one piece being selected in the soundtrack. -

The brilliant soundtrack of the movie shines out. It is a blend of Chinese and Western elements. Through the collision and fusion of Chinese and Western musical elements, the soundtrack promotes and presents the plot of the movie through music. It is a good theme for the research and analysis of the relationship between music and Chinese and Western social cultures. This article explores the aesthetic resonance of Chinese and foreign audiences by analysing the uniqueness of the soundtrack.
