Number 2: MOAB MT. BIKE WEEKEND 2016: SEPT. 30, OCT. 1, OCT. 2, OCT. 3 (FRI-MON) Please join us for yet another weekend in Moab for miles of mountain biking, hours of socializing, and mounds of good of eating. The basics of the weekend are pretty much the same as in years past: we are again housed at Wa- termelon House in town (567 Jefferson St.), we will ride four days, and we will again celebrate Saturday eve with a group dinner. As of this writing, there are still beds available in Watermelon House for three nights with the cost, including dinner on Saturday eve, at $85. For questions, please contact Mark Shimoda at 303-514-6248 in the af- ternoons or email at [email protected]. Below are the particulars of the rides and more details of the activi- ties. Footnotes: 1. Please keep in mind that weather is a factor in Moab. Starting times and rides will be changed if conditions warrant. 2. This weekend is scheduled to coincide with Outerbike where riders can see the latest in mountain biking equipment and rent bikes. See www.outerbike.com for more details. 3. More information on the rides and the Moab area is available at www.discovermoab.com.

Friday, September 30 MTB P2, T1-3 1:30 PM Wheels ready to roll. THE RIDE: Klondike Bluffs. Meet Mark Shimoda (303-514-6248) for the warm-up ride for the weekend. Klondike Bluffs area is off Hwy. 191 north of Moab and has 17 named trails that range in difficulty from beginner to advanced. DIRECTIONS: at 17.5 miles north of Moab and about 13 miles south of 1-70 turn east onto Klondike Bluffs Road. At the first parking area take the dirt road on the right and stay on that dirt road passing another parking area until you arrive at the third parking area. We will meet there and

10 start our ride. AFTER THE RIDE: visit OuterBike which is on the way to Moab or get settled at Watermelon House, happy hour at the house and then DINNER out.

SATURDAY RIDE: MTB P3 T3 9:30 AM Wheels ready to roll. THE RIDE: Amasa Back. Meet Mark Shimoda (303- 514-6248) at the trailhead ready to ride one of our favorite rides. Over time more trails have been added off the main trail which offer more miles and more technical riding for those who seek a greater challenge. This can be done as an out and back or out on the main trail or take the many options on the return back to the trailhead. DI- RECTIONS: from the center of town locate the McDonalds on the west side of Hwy 191. Turn there onto Kane Creek Road. Follow Kane Creek Road for 4.7 miles and park on the right after the cattle guard. Two large parking areas are available for mountain bikers. Ride up to the trailhead where we will all meet at 9:30. THE FOOD: drinks after the ride in the parking lot. Some riders may choose to add to the ride doing Power Line, Slick Rock or some other ride or visit a winery. DINNER: this is the group dinner. Again Mark will prepare a dinner with lots of help and this year the menu is grilled soy ginger salmon served with jasmine rice and arugula fennel salad with a dessert of chocolate cake and ice cream. Drinks are BYOB and in the past there has been lots to go around. This year we will miss Gail and her margaritas! Don’t eat fish, call me.

SUNDAY RIDE: MTB P3 T3 9:30 AM Wheels ready to roll. THE RIDE: Gemini Bridges. Meet Mark Shimoda (303- 514-6248) for another ride with many options. DIRECTIONS: drive north out of Moab, turn left/west onto Gemini Bridges Road and drive 4.4 miles on this dirt road to near Gold Bar Trailhead. The group will decide what trails to ride depending upon interest. Likely we will not do Poison Spider and the Portal since we did that last year. FOOD: light snacks after the ride. Visit OuterBike for the last time and pick up as much swag as possible since this is the last day of the event. DINNER: Jennifer has offered to provide lasagna and we will chip in the rest of the food and drinks for a dinner at Watermelon House.

MONDAY RIDE: MTB P4 T4 9:30 AM wheels ready to roll. THE RIDE: SlickRock. Meet a leader to be designated for the classic ride known throughout the world. This 10.5 mile ride is well marked so getting off trail is difficult. This is a difficult ride both technically and physically!! If interested in getting a taste of the real thing, plan on riding only the practice loop. DIRECTIONS: take Sand Flats Road out of town to the parking area for Slick Rock. There is a cost for this ride, $5.00/vehicle for a day pass. FOOD: a quick drink, non-alcoholic and then the drive home.

Sunday, October 2nd INT-H3-38-SW-9:00 AM Meet Tom Hurja (303-903-4449) at the second set of railroad tracks in Sedalia for a hilly 38-mile out-and-back ride to Larkspur, then stop at the convenience store for a mid-ride snack, readying for the return trip.

INT-H2-25 +-NE 9:00 AM Meet DBTC riders at Cake Crumbs Bakery and Coffee shop, located at 2216 Kearney Street, Denver. These rides will be led by various ride leaders. Each Sunday we pick a different route and the dis- tances vary from 25 miles up to 50 miles by mid-summer. We ride east towards DIA and Watkins, sometimes north to Brighton, southeast to Aurora Reservoir or Cherry Creek or maybe north east to Broomfield and the new High- way 36 Trail. MTB/ATB-P2 T1.5 10+-SW 9:00 AM East/West and High Point Trail Meet Carol Bennett, (720-425-6124, DIREC- TIONS: Prong Horn Park; From C-470 Exit Broadway and head south, (towards Highlands Ranch). Follow Broad- way until the traffic light at Wildcat Reserve Parkway and turn to the right. (It’s about two miles.) Turn on to the next street on the left- Weather’s Field Way. Prong Horn Park is about 1/2 mile south of Wildcat Reserve Parkway on Weather’s Field Way. The park is on the right side of the street. Park in the parking lot or on the surrounding street. There usually is ample parking. Bicycle Type: Front shock suspension is recommended, but a hybrid is suitable on the East/West Trails and some parts of the High Point Trail System. Trail Head: The East/West Trail head is across the street from Prong Horn Park. Ride Description: The ride drops in at the East West trail from Prong Horn Park. We will ride the trail for about a mile and take a sharp right at a three way trail junction. We will follow a downhill portion of the trail on the East/ West Trail for about 2 miles. We will meet at a gate that is to the private Back Country Trail System. I must be there when we enter the gate and we must ride together as a group as the trails are for residence of HR and their guests. There are many loops and trails that total several miles. We can study the trail map and decide the routes that the group would like to ride. I stop at all trail junctions and will wait until I account for all riders. The trails are well maintained and have minimal exposed roots and loose rocks. The trails turns are banked and have plenty of bumps and curves to excite even the most skilled cyclists but are easy enough that an advanced beginning mtn biker would be comfortable with most of them. Caution must be observed as many of the trails wind through scrub oak and there are blind corners and hills. Use of a bell is highly recommended. The High Point Trail System crosses open grazing land. I have seen cattle and their “road apples” across the trails.
